A small slip of a girl walks out of the shadows of the large main room of the Three Headed Ettin one late autumn afternoon. Twilight is settling over Daring and the tavern is starting to get that evening buzz, a bard or some sort preparing to take to the stage.
The girl weaves through the patrons, a small pack slung over one shoulder, her cloak covering her form so itβs hard to see if she is really anything more than a wisp. Coll was serving another customer and thus didnβt catch sight of her coming up to the bar.
βTake those over to that lot in the corner,β he says to the staff member who attempted to lift the tray of drinks but ended up sloshing them a little. Coll pulls out a cloth and starts to wipe down the bar top, quick practiced circles catching the little dribbles of drink that have been spilt. He starts to move to the left, spots someone entering the tavern, gives them a friendly nod, then turns back to finish his clean down when he suddenly spots the girl right in front of him.
βAh!β Coll cries out in surprise, hand going to his chest. βBy the gods,β he mutters before smiling at the new face he does not recognise. βI didnβt see you there, sorry. Thought you were a shade or a ghost for a second!β
He gives a light-hearted laugh but the girl, for it was a girl from what he could tell, doesnβt respond. She pushes her hood back slightly, showing her face a bit more and he sees irises so dark it is hard to tell where her pupil is. Itβs a little unnerving, but not the first odd thing he has seen that day.
βSo what can I get ya? A pint of something? You look like you just arrived.β
βA room, if you will. Private if possible.β Itβs a little hard to hear her behind the mask she wears that covers her lower face, but her voice is velvet smooth and she sounds quite refined. Her fringe is cut a little short though, Coll observes. Possibly a job she did herself.
βYes I believe we do have a room left. Itβs quite small but we have plenty of space in our dorm rooms.β Coll pauses politely, waiting for the girl to say something but she does not. He shrugs, pulls out a key and lays it on the counter.
βItβs one gold per night but that includes food-β
Coll blinks and looks down to see pale fingers have already deposited seven gold coins on the counter. He starts to smile.
βRight, well the room is yoursβ¦β
But the girl has already walked away, the key gone from the counter.
Coll scoops up the gold as the figure he waved at earlier comes over, climbing up to sit on a stool.
βGood evening Coll,β a warm musical voice says.
βHi-ya Sheryl,β Coll greets her. βYou look a little stiff, you alright?β
βIβve been surrounded by ancient tomes, doing a lot of research at the Academy today,β the fae-bard explains, stretching her back. Thereβs a series of pops as her spine responds to the twists and turns she does in the stool and she gives a sigh. βDecided to take a break for dinner but didnβt want to go all the way back to the Four Winds.β
βHmmβ¦β
βYou okay Coll?β Sheryl asks, looking in the direction the man kept glancing in.
βYeah, just a new face. Weβve been seeing a bunch of new people come in recently!β
βWell Daring is achieving many great things. Itβs no wonder people would want to see what the fuss is all about.β
The girl watches the small woman continue to chat to the tavern owner for a time, observing them both. Perhaps it wouldnβt be the best idea to stay in this tavern. Then again, the girl had already paid the gold for her room. Might as well stay. She could always disappear into the shadows if needs be.
