Councillor and Archmage Archselon sought assistance with a lead to find a necromancer, one who had taught a versemaker who had called himself the Necrodancer. The Necrodancer was slain in Kundar by a group of powerful adventurers last year – his phylactery already taken care of by an adventurer called BB. Recently, the Councillor had done research on his tomb near the Dawnlands city of Daring Heights. Apparently he had a mentor who he learned his particular kind of magic from, someone even more powerful. Archselon had been sending out notices to find a lead for a while and finally received one which pointed to Mechanus. (NB: I think it’s pretty clear who gave her this tip considering what transpired whilst we were there.) She did not want to see another Necrodancer terrorise the Dawnlands again. She sent us to Mechanus to find out for sure – and take care of anyone who might be there.
It should have been something I picked up on. Being given the exact gear we needed to go to was too much of a coincidence. We certainly did not have to wait long before Cadence, the mentor we were looking for, greeted us. Her attempts at waylaying our progress were fun at first but once we entered her lair we were dancing to her rhythm and we had to either adapt or die.
Archselon had warned us that when facing the Necrodancer in the past, adventurers had been forced into singing songs from versemakers of the realms. I would not have believed it possible but I found myself singing lines from such songs by Wordsmiths of the Autumn, SendingCranium, and Bee-lee Eyelish. When we did sing, we seemed to perform better in getting through the gauntlet Cadence had set as a challenge to any who dared to enter. Any time we failed though our heartbeats got faster and it made keeping pace difficult. Pentaghast lost Paracelsus again early on – the first of our failures.. That is the sixth iteration the mage has lost now, I believe.
This time, whilst facing powerful mages I did not fall, though it was noticed immediately there were glyphs of warding against countering spells. Such an interesting choice the denizens of Mechanus chose to do that, as Cadence admitted it was not something she had set up. As mentioned above, it was as we were fighting that I spotted mechanical tentacles grab something that looked like a power crystal from the dead mechanical body of Primus Secundus. There was a moment where our eyes met, and The Fugitive knew I saw him. It wasn’t until later, when telling Archselon what I saw that it was confirmed to be Jack. Unfortunately, there was no way any of us could get to where he was at that moment either, especially not in the middle of our battle against a necromancer-bard. We did dispense with Cadence quick enough though and proceeded to scour every bit of information she had.
We found out Cadence had taught many students her twisted form of bardic magic. The possibility of others like her, like the Necrodancer, is high. Amongst her other notes I found something that clarified what The Fugitive stole. It is referred to as a Containment Seal. When mentioning this to Archselon, and describing what I saw, the archmage realised she had been played – as had we all.
I am due for a research appointment with a scholar at Daring Academy to look into this Containment Seal. Any further information gleaned will passed on immediately.
Report passed on 24 day of Highsun.

Adventurers, friends,
Many of you will recall the various encounters with the bard/demi-lich known as the Necrodancer over the past few years. As a follow-up to his apparent destruction in Kundar, I sent scholars to investigate his old tomb near the Frog Bog. They turned up an old book that suggests the origin of his obsession with necromancy - a prior bard who attempted something similar.
Her tomb (indeed, it always seems to be tombs) rests in the plane of Mechanus. To prevent anyone from having to suffer another necrodancer, I would like to hire some of you to investigate this predecessor, and ensure that any traces of their magics or learnings are destroyed.
Come speak to me directly when you are ready to depart.
Warm regards,
Councillor Aurelia Archselon
