Rolled into a palm sized tube is a piece of nondescript parchment, written in a mix of common, symbols, elvish, and draconic.
ASSIGNMENT REPORT #23
People/Organisations of Note:
Wren Lunabolt – scout/holy warrior, aasimar (scourge), non-binary; pets: Stripes (badger), Beans (white fox), Percival (awakend hyena), Peppy (pigeon)
Igrainne – ranger/holy warrior (Lolth), half-drow, female
Glint – mage, fire genasi, male; familiar: Stryx (owl)
Sergeant Grimes – fighter/holy warrior (god unknown), Daring Heights City Watchman, human, male
His Lordship Verin Montilyet – King of D’Avalon, tabaxi (lion), male
Saraphina – Guardian of the Great Library of Thoth, ki-rin, non-binary(?)
Locations:
Daring Heights – Dawnlands city
D’Avalon – city of artists, merchants, creatives, Harnash, ruled by one of three noble houses for a period of 10 years
The Great Library of Thoth – demi-plane of unknown celestial realms
Body:
An invitation from Lunabolt to discover where a map they had acquired through their “secret” activities leads to (NB: They like to moonlight as a thief that acquires and redistributes the wealth of rich merchants in Daring Heights and Port Ffirst, and are very good at it.) was accepted. A welcome distraction from the circle of thoughts and research being done over the last few days.
A quick teleportation to D’Avalon later and the King himself was welcoming us (NB: Mostly Wren) to his city. Asking if he knew where the map led, the King said he did, offering us the use of his own horses which he had won in a competition in the Beastlands and would get us there in record timing. Really quite exquisite creatures, the King was not overspeaking when he said they run “really fucking fast.” (NB: Quote may be slightly inaccurate.)
True to his word, the Beastlands Equines got us to the location on the map within hours of our departure which would have normally taken days. The party proceeded to investigate the area, but no visible traps, magical or otherwise, were around. Lunabolt felt a pull to a small obelisk where it looked like the map they had was meant to be placed. Having done so, they said a voice spoke to them, claiming they’ve been waiting a very long time for someone to receive their message and that they would open the doorway for us. Seeing no immediate threat the party went through the portal the mysterious speaker opened.
The place we entered, we learned, is one of fifty other repositories dedicated to an old god, Thoth – a god of knowledge and learning. The creature that had originally spoken to Lunabolt was able to telepathically speak to all at this point, and through a series of questions we discovered its name – Saraphina. It was also revealed that, to Saraphia’s belief, Thoth had “abandoned” them some centuries before, and that they wanted to be set free because they were dying. Curiously, and especially speaking of Thoth, at times it sounded like there was another “Guardian” speaking to us. Sergeant Grimes, a veteran adventurer and staunch investigator, was of the same mind as I, did not trust it. However, it soon became apparent that the only way we were going to get out was if we descended into the depths of the library, down to wherever this “Guardian” was residing.
Never before have I seen such a repository of knowledge. Lunabolt had no interest in any of the contents for most of them were books and scrolls (NB: A very bizarre and childish aversion to the written world but something I chalk up to being young and ‘rebellious’.), but others like Glint and Igrainne had a fascination with many of the rooms just the same as I. No books were taken though as there was a protective barrier, keeping the tomes securely in their place.
When the party arrived in the Sanctum of the Guardian we were met with a beautiful celestial creature with a spiralling horn and the body that put to mind a dragon. (NB: Later it was discerned the creature was a ki-rin.) But it had been corrupted, either from falling into some kind of madness from being cut off from Thoth and/or from being alone for centuries. (NB: We came across no other creatures or people or monsters in the Library, alive at any rate.) They asked us to help set them free, which could be done one of two ways: Every member of the party would have to give up 5 years of their life to them, or we would have to fight and slay the creature. Looking at Sergeant Grimes, he was not keen on giving up any years. Glint gave a very vocal objection too – and then Igrainne tried to banish the creature.
The ensuing fight did not last long and the creature was, in the end, freed of its prison, returning to the celestial spheres where it could heal properly, freed of its corruption. Lunabolt was given a mighty gift by the creature, a bow, and then we were returned to the Prime Material.
The day after tomorrow I will return to the Obsidian City. Should this be my final report for her Majesty, know that I am eternally grateful for all she has done for me.
Report passed on 6 day of the Claw of Winter.
Neh diis lus’a, lus diis’a.
