It was risky stealing from their employer. It certainly wasn’t honourable. But then, when has she ever been that sort?
“…no one has ever called you soft…”
Beastie was right. No one wouldn’t dare. Not unless they had a death wish.
“…this mythical castle…it must have many shadows…”
“We are a long way off yet. But I have no doubt it will.”
“…good…”
It wasn’t personal either. In fact, Delilah had rather liked Khamsin. The air genasi was a princess — ‘not her fault’ one might say, ‘her father was a djinn and she didn’t have any say in the matter’. Delilah knew all about that. One’s parentage is not a choice a child can make. But Khamsin and her brother, Etesian, were interesting. Thieves, magic users, and one of them at least had a sense of style.
“…do you think her pride has recovered?…” Beastie asked, shadowy nose sniffing in Oziah’s general direction.
Delilah, from her spot at the desk, tallying the sheer amount of gold they’d both gotten and comparing it to the market value for properties of the size she and her love were looking at, gave a soft chuckle. “Her pride is always the first thing to recover. I shall let her know you were concerned though.”
If a not-cat could scoff, that is what Beastie does. “…If only I could have seen it…”
Delilah turns back to the gold and tallies, smiling in that way only someone who loves another does. “Those quadrones guarding the anti-magic field never stood a chance.”
It wasn’t something she had expected to find. But when she’d realised what was below their feet in that little chamber with the two denizens of Mechanus, Delilah was not going to waste any time. Destroying the anti-magic field was the best course of action, not only to allow for Oziah’s rage to finally have somewhere to go, but for Elias to facilitate their escape with such ease that it almost took the fun out of it.
Almost.
“I’m sure there will be another chance for Oziah to cut down those who annoy her.”
“…hmm…”
She finished counting, scribbled a few numbers on the paper she was working on, and then sat back in the elegant wooden chair. Just shy of 19,000 gold. No small amount to sniff at, for sure. But not enough. Delilah sighs.
They still had a long way to go… but it was a good start.
