Rolled into a palm sized tube is a piece of nondescript parchment written in a mix of common, symbols, elvish, and draconic.
ASSIGNMENT REPORT #27
People/Organisations of Note:
Oziah Daybreaker – holy warrior, aasimar (fallen), female; mount: Deimos (skeletal, fiend)
Jaezred Vandree – mage (pact magic, patron: the Moonweaver), noble, drow, male; Velve (black widow spider familiar)
Carnán – nature holy warrior, firbolg, male; mount/pet: Ulfr (dire wolf, celestial?)
Sparks-in-Shade – mage (sorcerous/pact magic, patron: unknown fiend), kenku, male; Mac (crow, fiend)
Tim the Enchanter – mage (pact magic possibly, patron: unknown), human, male (deceased)
Rakshasa [Name Unknown] – fiend, male
Other Soldiers, Wyvern, Poison Trolls – ran away or killed
Location:
Fort Ettin – Adventurer's hub
Angelbark Forest – Expansive woods north of Daring Heights
Matchstick Fort – Was once the base where Kurtz lived, destroyed
Body:
There are a lot of complicated emotions around the situation involving Kurtz, the young pact-mage Silvia, and myself. The whole situation, were I not in the midst of it, would sound like something the romantic playwrights or versemakers of the Summer Court would concoct for one of their Grand Theatre Plays. Yet this is not a story, this is life and happy endings do not happen to one such as I. This I know all too well.
Facts. Investigations. Truth seeking. Connecting the threads. These were what motivated the expedition to the part of the Angelbark where the mage Pentaghast had first come across Kurtz – where the mage had stolen the Apocrypha of Alchemical Alterations from the nearly ancient green shadow dragon. Pentaghast had described the region as being extremely temperate, almost jungle-like – something akin to the region around Gadenthor in Harnash. However, the woods were the same as it was anywhere else. (NB: I am not sure if Pentaghast didn’t think of it at the time, or perhaps came to the conclusion later, but dragons are known to affect the region where they have their lair. To say that Kurtz was changing the region is like pointing out the sky is blue – rather obvious.) Instead of the cave and a jungle we found flower fields and a matchstick fort. Carnán determined the flowers were natural, though purposefully grown, and were rather strong poisonous flora. After an initial reconnaissance with Vandree, it was determined the fort was manned by at least 30 soldiers, if not more.
Whilst Daybreaker attempted to gain admittance by talking to the guard and then the Fort’s ‘leader’ Tim the Enchanter, pretending to be a mercenary in search of a command to join, I infiltrated the base and began to explore.
Earlier Carnán and Vandree communed with the region and discovered a force of humanoids were marching away from the fort in a westerly direction. This aligned with all the empty tents. We had come at a point when the force inside was divided, rather surreptitiously. (NB: Almost too fortuitously.) It was whilst scouting out the command tent, the Shadows cloaking me in silence even in the midday sun, that it was discovered there was a rakshasa in the Fort. Not wanting to face the fiend on my own, I retreated to a safe distance, messaged my companions to inform them of what truly lay in wait for us, and then the assault began.
However, even when the battle broke out the fiend did not emerge from the tent. There was one point where I heard them saying something in their Infernal Tongue (NB: During the days when I am not on missions I will commence learning this language since there seems to be a number of fiendish creatures appearing in the Dawnlands these days.) before the rakshasa’s voice was cut off rather abruptly. We ended up being unintentionally incautious however as it had turned out, after the soldiers had abandoned their fort for being frightened by Vandree’s white dragon form (NB: He polymorphed into one.), and the fight was over, the fiend revealed it had been watching us as we fumbled around trying to find any of Kurtz’s hoard to bring back with us. Upon discovery by Carnán it quickly plane shifted away.
I will admit, the chances were small that Kurtz’s hoard would still be there. But what we did discover – the presence of the Rakshasa, and all the poisons that were being made – was telling, though it raised more questions.
Was the force the Forest Walker and the Spider sensed sent out on some sort of pestilence mission? Or were they a false lead meant to do some nefarious task that would then be blamed on Kurtz at a later date?
Pending a follow up on that lead, the next step for the situation surrounding Kurtz, his pact-bonded mage Silvia and myself comes down to two options. Three if one wants to get technical.
Option One: Start coming up with a plan to infiltrate Malbolge so as to retrieve the copy of Kurtz’s infernal contract in Glasya’s possession. This will include further research on how to properly destroy an Infernal Contract and any further information that can be gathered about where Glasya would keep such treasures in her lair.
Option Two: Prepare to plan a strike against Demona Neremorte. Her existence is a hindrance to both myself and Kurtz, let alone the threat she could post to the Fey Courts and even the Material Plane. No word has been had from her since contact was made several moons ago so the urgency of this threat has not increased, nor decreased.
Option Three: Do neither of these things and abandon Kurtz to sort his own mess out.
(NB: Option three is included in this list for posterity only. It is not one I am considering at this time.)
Both options one and two are risky. Both will require a substantial amount of preparation. I am inclined to go in the order they are written in since less is known about the second, and the first would be a good way to show that siding with me was the right choice. A way to build trust.
When a decision is made you will be informed.
Report passed on 8 day of the Claw of Sunsets.
