The following report is written in a mix of common, symbols, elvish, and draconic, kept secured in an Infernal Puzzle Box until such a time as the agent who wrote it can deliver it safely into a trusted Hand of the Temple of Night.
ASSIGNMENT REPORT #36
People/Organisations of Note:
Silvia Valtaire – human, once pact mage now holy warrior, female, sister
Kurtz – mage, adult shadow dragon (was once green), male, father
Pipper – mage/tinkerer/inventor, lizardfolk, female
Rae – mage, earth genasi, non-binary; owl familiar
Digs – scout/stealth fighter, kobold (blue), male
Locations & Organisations:
Fort Ettin – Dawnlands Adventurer hub
Angelbark Forest – large boreal and coniferous forest north of Fort Ettin
Stone Circle – Ruins in the Angelbark
Body:
Upon my return to the Dawnlands, I found my sister, Valtaire, who was finally ready to break her connection to my father, Kurtz. To say their relationship is complicated is a massive understatement (NB: Valtaire’s sarcasm and wit was reminiscent of a teen, which, considering her age, I do forget sometimes due to everything she has been through in her life.), but Kurtz has been and was more than willing to do this for her. I think Valtaire expected some resistance but after everything my father and I have discussed, all the trials we both have gone through, I knew in my bones he would not renege on his word.
The method of pact bonds differs vastly, but the way my father described it to us was that part of his soul had been put into Valtaire. If she wanted to be free, she would have to remove it from herself/he would have to take it back.
Seems simple enough.
Valtaire suggested the location for this ritual should take place where she had been brought back, a ritual stone circle located in the farther reaches of the Angelbark Forest. Much to Kurtz’s surprise, Valtaire was insistent upon waiting until just before dawn, the reason being because of her desired connection to the Morning Lord as her new found religion. Waiting through the night was easy enough. When time came we took our places and then Kurtz began the ritual.
Entering another’s soul scape or mind is a… strange thing. Valtaire’s was fraught with darkness and creatures ready to drain our very life. Then, a celestial, bright as the sun, was there, and the rest of us only had one thing to do: keep my sister safe.
The final hurdle was when a part of my father’s soul came to try to stop us. Larger than he is in life, this part of my father’s soul was everything a dragon truly is with no hint of any temperance or care that my sister and I have come to know from him. Rae and Digs, two young adventurers new to the scene, were completely consumed with fear as they tried to stay far enough away. (NB: Probably for the best, really. They wouldn’t have stood a chance if that part of my father’s soul decided to go after them.)
When Valtaire landed the final blow the change in her internal landscape was immediate. No longer barren and cold, or dark, new life and light, green fields, hope even, entered there. I was very happy for her.
And then we returned to ourselves and I saw she had used her pact weapon to kill my father.
It sounds dramatic no matter which way it is put but the fact of the matter is, Kurtz went into this knowing that if Valtaire was to be successful, it would end up killing him. I would have been angry had I not been feeding him a potion of healing to ensure he would return to me. I think Valtaire was in as much shock as I, though for vastly more complicated reasons than killing her once pact-bound patron.
Once Kurtz was restored, and Valtaire had a moment to gather herself, we celebrated with a toast to choosing your own destiny and breaking the chains that would keep you shackled.
