ASSIGNMENT REPORT #11
People/Organisations of Note:
Little Beastie – trained cat companion, left at Fort Daring for safety
Igrainne – ranger, half-drow, female
Kalta – fighter, half-orc, female
Ruk – mage, elf? githyanki?, male
Professor Carter – researcher at Daring Academy, half-elf, male
Commander Cordelia Jadefist – fighter, dwarf, female, Commander of Daring’s First
Aurelia Archselon – mage, aasimar, female, Council Head of Daring Heights
Locations:
Daring Heights – Dawnlands city
Fort Daring – barracks for Daring’s First militia
The Chasm – deep cut into the land outside of Daring Heights, leads to the Underdark
Body:
Some people say Beholders are amongst the most frightening of monsters one can encounter on any Plane of Existence. The ability to dream another being like it into life is something… But perhaps it is my own lack of arcane prowess that makes me question those who say Beholders are the most terrifying creatures to behold.
Especially when this one clearly had no sense of survival.
Igrainne led our way down and through the Chasm after we had our mission brief from Jadefist and Archelson, gathering the necessary additional information about Beholders from the young and newly appointed Professor Carter. Apparently there had been another group of adventurers who had fought a Gazer – an infant Beholder we were told. The academics at the Academy had been sitting on that little tid-bit of information for weeks meant the Beholder that dreamed it into existence had been doing stars know what.
The way information circulates – or gets stuck – here is truly astounding.
Whilst in the Chasm, we came across the site of the fight from the previous group of adventures, but our path was meant to take us further. It was obvious at one point people did live down there – possibly drow by the fact that the word “home” was written on on the wall pointing in one direction. Our group went the opposite way.
It became apparent that we eventually entered the domain of the Beholder we sought – though at the time none of the party knew the telltale signs. One moment there was acidic goo dripping from the ceiling in a large stone room. The next, it was gone. The Shadows were many down in the Chasm, meaning my passage was as a swim in a still ocean. Kalta was worried she would be left behind but the mage Ruk surprised us by taking the half-orc by the arm and crossing an illusioned pit of death by use of an arcane door.
When speaking with the learned Professor Carter before he had offered two strategies:
Perhaps a little foolheartedly, the decision was made for them when the Shadows accepted my walk through them, only to have the sound of my running feet betray me so it noticed our party before the others were ready.
The fight was tough, at one point all of us thought Kalta would be disintegrated into nothing before even getting a chance to lay a mark on the Aberration, but her half-orc fortitude and fighting abilities are strong. They saw her through it all.
What was curious was how, as the Shadows brought me closer, as Kalta and Igrainne’s arrow’s found their marks, and as Ruk got tossed about by the telekinetic ray of the Beholder, our group of four was able to wear it down quicker than anticipated. But, more than that, it seemed to not realise the danger it was in – constantly going closer and closer to Kalta even though the fighter had proven her fortitude against its attacks over and over.
It was strange.
The Beholder had two Ioun stones that had been floating around itshead eye self – one of Intellect, one of Unassailable Health. After all she went through, it was agreed that Kalta would take the one she wanted (the stone of Intellect). The other was kept by me.
The success of our “adventure” was welcomed news upon our return, and thus no more Beholders in the area of Daring Heights. So far as we are aware.
