The little fairy flew onwards through the gentle countryside, the soft yet audible hum of her orange paned wings mixing with the bird song in the early morning air.
Light breaks through the morning mist, causing parts of her form as she moves to gleam. A tall slender horn fastened to a band at her head, small yet stout ebony plated legs ending in two curved claws on each foot.
The rest of the fairy’s form is by contrast unremarkable. Dark brown hair, simple tanned leather tunic, a nobbled holstered club and javelin and pouch hang from the waist. Two large pointed ears lead into her face, a slightly jagged jaw, a wide mouth and large pointed but proud nose. A dark smear of what appears to be mud adds to this rural visage, but also causes her two quick charcoal eyes stand out from her face, like a playful splots of ink on the surface of fresh white parchment.
She is a far cry from the bedazzled and colourful soft spoken fair folk from the tales told by mothers to soothe their children to sleep. But this fairy has seen hardship, most brought on by features of her appearance and the remnants she now adorns and arms herself with.
Yet she has also experienced new found flutters of happiness too. The un-judging look of awe from a young girl in a village marketplace. The improv routine of acrobatics. The claps and cheers from the small crowd that had gathered. The scattering of round things called coin that landed at her feet. The large apple brought forth by the girl and held out to her. Her beaming smile, so open and accepting, causing tears of joy to form in the young fairy’s eyes.
And now a new flutter begins in her chest as the form of a great fort, bigger than any building she has ever seen in her life comes into view as she mounts a hill, its pink painted walls standing bright and vibrant against the golden morning sky.
The fairy hovers for a moment taking in the view, a sharp toothed grin forming across her face, a light breeze brushing the fringe that forms around her horn. “Fort Ettin. A new start,” She says in a voice buzzing with energy, “lets buggin' do this!” And she speeds off, towards her new adventure.
