I usually love the nighttime. The beautiful moon and the stars above, shining their beautiful lights, like little bugs around a big mother bug. But tonight, the stars were all scattered. Even the moon was faded. Hiding. As if she too knew, something scary awaited in the dark.
Rumours had been spreading all round Daring Heights. Tales of big scary monsters in the dark, people and cattle going mysteriously missing-people buggin’jumping at bumps in the night! Well I wasn’t scared. It was time to flit up, and show the folk of Daring that there was nothing to fear with Beets the Beetle around town!
I met the party for our ‘night-time’ mission on the edge of Portal Plaza, just as one of the many clock towers stuck midnight. Caring Granny Boosya, Uncle Lucky, Buff Anabel..and a new guy-Elf Erevan. A quiet and mellow guy, though still happy enough to accept some gingerbread from me!
Oh flittin’right! I picked up a basket of gingerbread from Paradise Frost earlier this evening for the party-apparently a big favourite with locals to have with their bedtime cocoa-and oooh buggin’man-they were sooo flittin’good! That little bit of..cinnamon, mmh, just gives that perfect warming kick, and they were all shaped like little townsfolk. I personally liked biting their heads off first and working my way down, I mean, that’s where all the juicy meaty bits are right?
…Where did bug did that come from?…
Uhm-anyway..
We ventured out into the night on the edge of town. Clouds had come in smothering the stars, the faint glow of the moon peeking out between them. I flew above the others as planned, their torches giving me a guide as I peered out into the darkness. I then saw two people, smudgie but still seeable in the dark. I called to the others I was flittin’over for a closer look. I remember hearing whispers..strange..soft, then, it all goes black.
And I was stiff as stick, falling.
‘Oh Everan, My hero!’ Seems this elven lad is a bit of a princess charming, catching me right out of the air!
Pity the good dream ended there..and became..a nightmare.
Black swirling mist before us..N-no it couldn’t be! He-he’s not there, not inside m-
My head fills with horrible whispers as the mist swirls in around me, freezing me, the whispers suddenly becoming louder, more-droning..and I hear. Him.
“Hello Beets..Missed me?”
No…No-no-no!
“Oh yes, Been a bit quiet without me hm? Don’t worry, I was never far away…”
I open my eyes and and look over and see him-or-see-me! Floating in the air, smiling mockingly, using my body again, my eyes black, my friends blasting him, hacking at him but not having any affect!
N-no-GO AWAY!
I flit forward, warmth glowing through me as I call forth my inner anger, my rage, blazing bright and clear as my hand morphs into a claw, and tear through Bogar-me!
He goes down, mouth gaping in shock with a wailing gasp as he falls! “Yes! Buggin’take that yo-“ I said..before suddenly. I feel him. Hear him. Back in my mind, His weight heavy and oppressive. His claws long and sharp as they delicately ping at the happy memories that had begun to fill his void. “Busy in here..Tut tut..this won’t do…Looks like we’ll have to CUT some of their weaknesses away!”
“No!” I shout, and shake my vision free from my mind, wrenching my eyes wide open again. I see him ahead, his teeth smirking violently in my mouth as he pulls it wide, black gooey mandibles forming around them, as he goes to take a bite outta Booysa!
“No!-No! LEAVE HER ALONE!” I cry-and flit forward, my wings burning with speed as surge towards her.
Booysa blasts some magic, a warm fiery blazing which turns Bogar to ashes. But as I near her, a black claw explodes upwards from the dirt, my claw, and like a horrible wizened mummy I rise from the dirt. My skin sagging, my clothes and wings torn and dirty, beetle horn broken. As I get closer, the mummy me turns its head right round with a ‘SNAP’ to lear at me with ghoulish yellow fangs, a beetle crawling in and out between its two deep empty eye sockets. “Scared, are we Beets?” It says to me in a raspy Bogar voice.
I buggin’hold my nerve! “No! This isn’t real! I-T-this isn’t me! I won’t let you trick me!” I grow out my glowing mandibles and chomp once, twice, both bites ripping through Mummy Beets’ ragged form like paper, making it give out loud wheezing gasps before it tries to turn tail and run. I surge forward again, ready to strike…CHOMP!
And feel the full force of my former strength around my throat. Mummy Beets smiles as it clamps tightener and tighter with its mandibles, the skin and skin and features refreshing back to whole once, the gleam of Bogar power in its eyes-my eyes returning fully once more.
“You still haven’t learnt have you Beets?”, he says, his smile widening, voice becoming more guttural, snarling. “When you try to hurt me, you just hurt yourself! I’M PART OF YOU!” He laughs manically, the voice droning in my mind, my vision a sea of darkness.
I panic, chomping madly out with my mandibles. Feeling a hit each time, a searing pain across my own body as I bite, before…
I crumple to the earth, and lay there, crying.
That rest in the night felt so cold. Booysa looked so bad, I-the thing-Bogar!-I was so flittin’confused-so, so flittin’ scared! I pulled out my potion to save her, I couldn’t let-Poor Lolli would-!
Ev caught my hand, and with the other healed Boosya.
I sat on the ground, Lucky and Booysha huddled around me, Lucky soothing me with words, reminding me ‘I was amongst friends’, Booysa hugging me, stroking my hair. But nothing could warm the chill in my heart. The chill of feeling him again..in my head.
We venture on into the night, torches lit, my own held aloft as I guide Booysa, hand in hand. Ev says he spots something, another..’creature’, I falter. But then he says something else, another being, took the creature down. As we move closer, a shadow looms, a hillside, one with mouth of a cave in it’s side, and from within, a deep musical droning sounds. Boga-?!
A creature leaps out, scaled and shimmering, flittin’dazzling as it’s shiny surface reflects our torch light, the loud droning noise, like but unlike Bogar’s, pulsing outta large holes on its body.
It lunges at Boosya and I take hit, razor sharp claws raking down my side, before before it’s suddenly slammed by Anna. Pinned to the ground in her grasp it struggles hopelessly, merely matching Ana in scale but not in strength. An arrow just fired from the cave lodged in her shield.
Whatever was in there wasn’t Bogar, and it wasn’t scaring me!
“Come out and face us, or I’ll bite your head off! I cried, before summoned forth my best dragon impression, twisted and echoing with the additions of my mandibles and echoing of the cave. There was a scrabbling and a gasp as something backed against the back wall.
Whatever was inside, was afraid.
A girl, a little gnome girl. Well I say little, maybe a smidge smaller than me. But flittin’armored and tooled to the max, white painted face stern and untrusting! I liked her! She told us, through Boosya translating their strange flighty tongue, that she was from the Angelbark Forest, and she and her pet, shiny holey boy, were taking out smelly dead that plagued this land. I offered if we could help, she said no. We stunk. Well of the town, which I’ll admit can smell pretty flittin’ripe, but even my gingerbreaded fairiness was too ‘pungent’ for her! So we left her buggin’to it! I’d had enough for tonight as it was.
As the others headed for a late bedtime, arranging to meet in the morning to report our findings to the Council and reap our rewards, I flitted up to a favourite spot up on the rooftop of The Three Headed Dragon.
I couldn’t get comfy. A chill breeze was working it’s way through Daring Heights, and each time I began to drift off I felt it tickle over my leg, as if being moved of it’s own accord. A prickle on my neck, as if mandibles were adjusting to clamp shut around it.
Finally, after many long hours, the ill wind stills. But feeling of fear it left in its wake, still chilled me to my core.
