“There we go. All cosy big guy?”
It had taken a lot buggin blankets, and even Marto’s old cloak, but I’d managed to get Zalmern the giant, and even Tommy the teddy, all covered up and tucked into their flittin’enormous pile of hay we’d made up for them opposite Kavel’s Corner. All snug and ready for bed.
“Pretty fairy very kind!”, rumbled out the giant softly, by which I mean, didn’t cause all the horses in stable to start whinnying nervously again, or another rude shout from The Great Hall as someones tankard of ale rattled off the bar along with a couple more roofs tiles.
My ears glowed a little from the giant’s words, “Awh it’s nothing big guy, now you rest up! Buggin’busy couple days ahead.” I said, re-covering his buggin’huge toes that keep creeping out from underneath the patchwork of blankets.
“Fairy got sad today. Why?”
That buggin’caught me right off guard. “Oh-um..I-I wasn’t ‘sad’…’ I piped up, flittin’up in front of the giant’s face, a forced grin plastered across my own. Big’buggin mistake. The big guy’s small-and by small I mean as big as my flittin’head-soft icy blue eyes stared deeply into me, completely melting my facade.
“Look,” I said, hugging my arms, which despite my Ring of Warmin’ that had kept me toasty up in the giant’s frozen homeland of Jarvenal, suddenly tingled with chills. “I-I didn’t buggin’like how those mean ‘kitties’ were treating you up there. Chaining you up. Blaming you for stuff you had buggin’nothin to do with! Calling you a-a Monster…” The words caught in my throat as I swallowed back a..sob. Before beginning to rub a suddenly very itchy eye. “That mayor and the villagers, well..They’re all just big buggin’cowards!”
That flittin’trigged something in my brain, a memory. A sad one. Sittin’ on Gramps’ knees, swaddled in a blanket on his rocking chair by the fire. The stink of that pig pen still lingering in my nostrils, despite the warm bubbly bath I had just been given. “A horrible ugly monster like you shouldn’t be wearing pretty dresses!” rang the words of Petunia Primmy, as I stared up at her fluttering form from the puddle of muck she and her two sniggering friends has just dumped me in. The pretty new white dress Papa had bought me now as brown as the putrid mud that caked my hair and face. “Nasty little freaks like should know your place, penned up with the other animals, and out of the way of real fairies like moi! See you, Freak-Beet!” She finishes her taunts with a shrill cackling laugh as she flits off with her two lackeys, leaving me to my tears. ‘It only takes one buggin’person to start to tell a mean tale about someone…” Starts Gramps suddenly, his wise eyes staring deep into the crackling fire. “…Before you knows it, them lies keep’a spreading, growing and evolving like wildfire, with cowardly folk deciding to stand aside or even help feed the flames then be brave and stand up and face’m. Even if it means getting burnt.” Being a good girl doesn’t always mean it’ll be easy Little Bug, but knows that if you keep that love’n’fire to do the right thing in your heart, ain’t no buggin’body gonna be able to stop’ya!” Gramps looks down at me with a kind smile through his thick white beard, his blue eyes a twinklin’.
“We’ll keep you safe here big guy!” I say, my hands resolute as I look up at the towering form of the giant. “And with your help, no kitty’wanna be bullies, nor gith’yanki or their dragons are gonna take our home or our friends away from us!” Zal watches me, a small smile forming on his lips as he gives a confiding nod.
“I’ll just be up here if you need anything!” I say, as I start to flit’my way up towards my usual spot up on the fort wall above my room. Before suddenly, I feel a buggin’enormous, and yet ever so flittin’gentle hand envelope me and pull me down close. Into the warm embrace of a soft fleece furred teddybear, and a gentle loving giant. “Goodnight, friend Beets.” Zal murmurs, as he drifts off exhaustedly. “Goodnight Zal” I say, with a final rub of my flittin’itchy eyes, before I cuddle in close.
