I’ve never been one to be afraid of the dark,
worrying about monsters sneaking into your home
and creeping up on you…That’s why Gramps always said he slept
with a club under his pillow…No wonder he had a bad back…
Pity the monster I’m most scared of isn’t one you can
so easily prepare for…
Marto was right I really did need to get out on a job, and at the
very least get working on reducing the tab I would owe Cole
for the damages it-I…Caused to my room…
Luckily the others that had also signed up for the job easily bought my ‘bug’ catching story and didn’t flit on at me about it.
On the team was the reliable as ever quiet owl Yuli, a green goblin fella called Goop,
a curly haired halfling Nimble, and a human warlock gal named Silvia.
The job note was for bug, was of the weirdest ones I’ve has yet. A wobbly map leading to what the others say was a big crack in the ground 'The Chasm',
close to Daring Heights, and as for the note, ”Please help us. We have a mystery we hope you can resolve. We can pay.” It didn’t exactly give us much think about…
Apart from the writer seemed to have been eating a jam sandwich when making it. Eck!-That map was sticky!
After getting to The Chasm I had to admit it was bugging impressive, and that was before old man rope guy Staybor filled us in about it.
An ancient puzzle tomb, a huge fortress full of evil doers just asking for a butt whoppin’, miles of dark mysterious tunnels full of unknown dangers and mysteries.
Normally I'd of leapt at the chance to explore such a place but…It was an awful long way away to for the others to trapped in underground with me should I..turn…
One thing I didn’t expect though, was Silva to willing turn into a big monstrous dog-a hellhound the others called it. It turned out she was using some kinda cloak to do it, and so snout first led the way of our venture into the tunnels with Goop riding atop. Despite looking pretty ferocious though, it seemed Silva was pretty in control of this new cane form…
Until she tried to change back that is…
Until she tried to change back that is…
Looking into the eyes of her beast form, I saw the fear I had felt after each time I had changed back, staring around my room at the new carnage I had wrought in my unknowing state, worrying each time that each time it wouldn’t just be ripped cloth and splintered furniture…But blood...Bodies….
I volunteered to stay up with Sil while the others got some shut eye. I felt it only right I should be the one…But when Sil brought me my rope, and tried to tell me to tie her up..I-I just couldn’t do it…To do it to myself had been bad enough, but to do it to someone else…I-I was a coward…
Goop tied her as she wanted, and so I forced myself to sleep as close to her as I could, watching her until the darkness of sleep overcame me…

The next..day-night?-It was impossible to tell down here, we continued following the tunnel till it we entered a huge cavern and it got …DARKER…Like…Darker than dark…and the air felt…Creepy…The some of others said they had experienced this before, they called it, The Underdark…
Well to make matters all the spookier, it turned out we had been called down into this place for, a 'murder’.
A big beautiful muscular minotaur lumberjack gal called Teggan had apparently been accused of killing new mayor Jeremy Kenos upon his first day as mayor.
The ‘evidence’ as they called it: Her axe buried deep into the Mayor’s back…
Yeah, pretty blunt…or should that be, sharp?

Sheriff Tailwind seemed pretty sure of her guilt, but she was also pretty against Sil being there in her hound form. I made it perfectly clear to her that no harm was gonna come to Sil from anybody on my watch.
Bugging heck though, we weren’t prepared for this job to get as weird as it did…
As we examined what we thought was the the body of the…murdered Mayor Jeremy, Yuli discovered that both Teggan and the Sheriff were being controlled..were made of…Were both part of...A big pile of gooey red talking jelly...Jelly, which introduced itself to us as Judge Red, who had apparently…Eaten…All the villagers in the town where this murder had happened to take place…

Ap-apparently he didn’t want to trick us and eat though…H-he said he wanted us to help..Him?-She?-It?..Solve this mysterious, as it was "Literally eating it up from the inside"-Talk about dramatic irony!
Red used his goo powers to recreate the night of the murder for us. Firstly the tavern, where we quizzed the visitors on Major'Jeremy', who strangely, everybody seemed to have had a fondness for for all the exact same reasons, despite barely even buggin'knowing this fella before Mayoral Election…
The same thing happened when I tracked Tegan out of the tavern and she encountered a goat herd minotaur Patricia who I literally questioned to the point of melting into a puddle red guy when asking her why she had actually even liked this Jeremy guy?!
Talk about political overkill…

It was clever Yuli though, that finally cracked the case.
After asking a local shop keep about this Jeremy guy, they remembered they had only first met him properly after selling him a bunch of weird materials-things that could be used to summon ...A demon!

I don’t remember much of what happened next, Red stretched himself all thin, asking one of us to cut chord, and it turns out that lurking deep inside of them was...
A huge monstrous…d-devil…
A huge monstrous…d-devil…
Then next thing I remember...Was clinging tightly to Silvia still in her hound form, shaking violently, tears pouring down my face.
The others told me on the way back that I changed again…My eyes went black..and I-I grew..m-mandibles…beetle mandibles and..I bit the devil….
Judge Red explained how he realised along, that by eating Jeremy and the villages others, he must has also eaten the devil that Jeremy had summoned and then be possessed by.
He gave us a big shiny rock, a diamond as a reward, along with using his weird 'jelly-powers' to bring back the form of a departed priest dragon, who with some effort finally managed to change Silvia back to her human self.
We did warn Red though as we got 'reddy' to depart, that if he ever tried coming anywhere near Fort Ettin to even attire to devour any of our hero-folk friends…
We would flittin’ o’bugarate him!
We would flittin’ o’bugarate him!
It did make me start thinking though as we made our way back...If a so called a 'monster' like that can learn control itself to do 'some' good things…
Maybe I can learn to control this inner monster beast and benefit from it's actions that has awoken within me…
"After all", as I said to Sil on our long journey home, “Who wants to be normal huh?”
