Co written with the ever delightful Lolli (Jennifur Cottontail)
Lolli is out raising money to help repair some of the damaged properties around Daring Heights. As she’s hopping down the street, she looks into the distance and spots a familiar face. She smiles widely and shouts “BEETS”. She runs over and throws a hug at her. “Oh my gumdrop, I am so glad you’re here!”
Beets is at a doorway just dropping off a delivery to a sweet dear old lady. "Now the doctor said to make sure you take all off-Lolli?!" Her head as she hears a voice that warms her heart. "LOLLI! " She buzzes full pelt towards the bouncing ball of fluff, and catches her in a spinning flitting twirl midair! "Oh Lolli thank bug you're okay!"
She gives her a tight hug before lowering her to the ground and giving her a look over.
Lolli smiles happily as she embraces her friend and giggles at the twirls. She breaks the hug and stands there with a grin on her face. “Oh I’m so happy to see you. I was worried. But of course I didn’t need to be. Nothing can stop you! How did you get on with the battle? And… Beets…I’m sorry to hear about Coll. Are you ok?”
Beets smile fades as Lolli asks about the battle, her gaze trailing away to the side as she lowers herself down to the ground too. "I..I did alright...We-uhm..We lost a few people...Very..good people.." She takes a little gulping breath. "Yeah..Yeah it was sad..But...I-I'll be okay..." Her gaze trails back up to Lolli, "How about you? Were you okay? Did you stay safe?"
Lolli looks to Beets and can feel the sadness she’s trying to hide. She gives her one quick hug. “I’m so sorry again. It’s a tough time for everyone. I am here if you want to talk more. A lot of good people died that day that didn’t deserve to”. She lets her go and squeezes her hand. “Well, I was here in Daring Heights. I was on my way up with my Grandparents but I only found out last minute that they were in Bloody Creek. So as I was heading there the battle broke up and it was too dangerous to keep going. So I had to backtrack and I started panicking. Everything was happening so fast around me. However, luckily that’s when I ran into Pipper. I’m so glad I found her. We managed to find a safe place and we stayed together during everything. If I didn’t find her I… I would have been really scared”. She looks down a bit ashamed for saying she was scared. “I should have been… braver”.
Beets looks at her friend, the soft small paw clutching her hand giving a slight tremor, whether in frustration or an echo of the fear that must’ve coursed through her tiny body. But she remembers too, that sweet face wearing a look of sheer determination. As she surged around a street corner to help her grandma, as she knelt before her very self to aid her with a potion. Each time putting herself in harms way, in the path a colossal dragon, the ferocious creature easily ten-times her own size. She places a gentle hand on the cheek of her friend and turns her head upright to face her, the thumb gently stroking the delicate whiskers that tickle her skin. “There’s no-one I know buggin’braver than you, Lolli Cottontail.” She confirms with a nod.
Lolli blushes and smiles with Beets words. “Thank you Beets. I appreciate that. Ohhhh wait!”, she says suddenly remembering something, “Speaking of brave…”. Lolli reaches into her pockets and pulls out a letter. The one Beets had give her before the battle “I think it’s time you’re brave and give this to Marto yourself. I didn’t know when I’d see you next so I’ve kept it with me the whole time!” Lolli hands over the letter for Beets to take back.
Beet’s pupils dilute as she stares at the letter held out towards her. The envelope is a pale cream, a little green beetle scrawled onto its folded tongue, the hue of the ink echoing in the slightly fearful look of her eyes.
She hesitates, just a moment too long, before taking it from her friend, tucking it and buckling it securely within the small satchel that sits on her hip. “Thank you...” says, casting her eyes skyward as if not wanting to meet Lolli’s eyes, before she gives a small purposeful sniff.
Lolli notices Beets not meeting her eyes and the sniff “Ohh I’m sorry if you didn’t want it back… I didn’t mean to make you sad. Are you ok? I just thought it must have important for you. I thought… you’d want it back”. She pauses before adding “Have you talked to Marto since the battle has been over? Is he ok…?” She really hopes he isn’t one of the dead but she hasn’t - clue. She hasn’t heard anything about him. She wonders if this is why Beets is sad and really hopes it’s not another death to the list.
Beets rubs her eyes and nose with the back of her arm vigorously before attempting to put on her normal smile. “No no it is- I mean..Thank you Lolli..I-I haven’t..And with things that happened during the battle…I-I think I’ve got more to say to Marto than even a letter could fit in it.”
Lolli reaches over and rubs Beets shoulder and reaches out to hold her hand reassuringly. "What happened? Do you want to talk about it? I am happy to listen. I'm sure Marto will listen to whatever you have to say" Lolli pauses for a moment and adds "But... if you don't want to talk about it we can discuss something else?"
Beets suddenly feels very exposed, she glances around before half flittin’half running holding tight to Lolli’s hand until they are safely tucked down a back alley where only a picket fenced flower garden and the dappled light cast from a large tree are the only things observing them. Beets leads Lolli to settle with her on the grassy earth surrounding the roots.”Lolli have you ever liked someone before? Like, a whole buggin’lot?
“Ohhh like a crush? I mean I haven’t had one in a while…. But Ohhhhhh Wait… Wait…Ohh do you have a crush on Marto?”, Lolli feels like she’s working it out and she finally understands now. “Oh my gumdrops, why didn’t I notice this before? Ohhh! And was the letter like a love letter? Ohhh my gumdrop! She squeals happily. She immediately clamps her hands to her mouth to stop her from talking further. Then she whispers through her paws, and enquires over at Beets with big eyesm “Am I right?”
Beets face suddenly turns very pale, her eyes going wide with shock as she quietly murmurs in a small broken voice, “What am I doing?…” She climbs to her feet, taking a few wobbly steps back, taking a last tearful look at her sweet harragon friend, the expression draining on her face slowly from excitement to confusion with a small, “Beets?” Before, Beets suddenly hurtles up into the air with a flurry of wing beats.
Lolli immediately casts Message, and points it in Beets direction as she quickly flies away, hoping she’s quick enough to reach her. Lolli’s voice sounds sorrowful as Beets hears her voice in her head “Beets… I’m sooo sorry. I really didn’t mean to upset you. Please come back…”
Beets falters slightly in her flight path before carrying on swiftly, disappearing into the horizon of Daring Heights.
