It began with a sudden icy chill in my chest.
A cold, so penetratingly deep, so harshly b-b-bitter, it took my breath away.
The gasp of pain freezing in my throat before it even had chance to leave my lips.
Slowly, the air in the darkness around me begins to change.
Becoming thicker…
…Denser…
…Moister…
Then, before me, a haze begins to emerge. One, that as I watch, I can see large individual beads of water begin to materialise within it, along with a voice.
“The moment I knew…”
The beads of water quivering in the echo of each word, begin to move. Swirling and swelling and spiralling together as they rise, till they resemble a towering rippling aqueous form of The Archfey themself…Ulorian.
The watery fey’s eyes bore down into mine, as cold and as ruthless an ocean in winter, before their words hit with a tide fuelled overwhelming hatred, knocking me to the ground.
“The moment I knew…I swore I would hurt you.”
I struggle to stand..my wings falling lank and damp against my back, as before me, Ulorian’s watery robes begin ripple. Shimmering and glimmering until I see moving images of…Us.
Pippa, Glade, Florian, Toothy, Velania and..me. All gathered round a table in the Three Headed dragon…Of us all travelling together along a wind-blasted, snow covered ridge of the Sunset Spines…Of our cautious entrance into an eerie frozen wood…Each of us there for our own interests, but all on look out for the desperate mechanical bug making gnome, Yepip Puddleback, and for the mysterious tool stealing monster that had caused their plight.
“I didn’t know how-but the one thing I have, is time…”
The rippling Ulorian chants, and I watch as the ice coating the trees around us begins to crack suddenly at these words as they echo around us. Huge great icicles rattling free from their branches, before stabbing down into the earth, cracking open great fissures from which water then begins to bubble up.
The flows swell, expanding hastily to become great rivers which continue to roar and surge, their force causing the various land masses we stand to be forced apart, separating us. But above all this, rising up from the very rivers themselves to glower down at us is the towering form of King Ulorian.
“And a time would come..”
I watch my face pale with fear, and then pain, as a spike of water thrusts forward, freezing into a long icy dagger as it stabs into me.
I see myself fall to knees, see my eyes shining with fear, my lips move as I plead my apologies, as I beg to be spared.
“A time when suddenly all of their joy will turn to ashes in their mouths.”
I see them unlike before where I only heard their cries, only heard their own pleas as, one by one, my friends are cut down.
Killed.
Slaughtered.
Taken down one by one mercilessly till they are left sodden, lifeless and limp.
“Only then, will you’ll know the dept is paid.”
I watch as the rage begins to overwhelm me as Ulorian baits me, plunging an icy dagger into Glade’s struggling form as they gloat.
“Oooh getting angry now? Can’t hide behind the skirts of Merla now can you?”
I flit forwards, hearing the last of my consciousness scream before The Beast completely overcomes me. “I’m gonna fucking kill you!”
The rippling spectral form of Ulorian speaks directly to me as I watch this, see my beast driven beetle form hurtle forward, blitzing the over chasms of surging water below.
“Was it worth it?”
They ask, and the scene changes, and suddenly before me I see the scene of…That Party. I see the others beginning to move back as Ulorian takes a big swig from their tampered glass, see the look in their eyes changing rapidly like the tide from one of shocked surprise to a suddenly broiling rage as they find themselves unable to pull the glass away from their lips.
The image shimmers to a close up of an ugly orange laced high heeled boot impacting into the side of their face, launched from the soaked through, hair-oil smeared, yet smirking, beetle-horned fairy.
Me.
The water spectre’s face darkens, and the image changes back to my enraged self, hurtling forwards as Glade falls before Ulorian, the sickly of green glow of their murderous spell illuminating their features as I impact them. Slamming them to the ground, my beastial black mandibles forming up from the monstrous black muck to clamp down around their neck before…
Blood…
The sweet sharp taste of blood mixed with the bitter tang of ash fills my throat, as a sudden arrow of ice rips through right my neck and out the other side…
“I will make you one promise…”
The spectre says, repeating Ulorian’s words as I watch myself be blasted back, and begin fall down towards the churning waters of the river below…
“One day you will find yourself..and you will be severely disappointed..”
I see the final shimmers of life in my black beastial eyes glimmer back at me before…
I hit the water.
...
I wake up…
It was dream…A nightmare.
…
I’m drenched.
I look up from my roof top bed, and see the that beautiful balmy evening has turned into a torrential downpour, permeated only by the occasional rumble of thunder.
I give a shiver, and then suddenly sneeze. I realise my Ring of Warming has somehow worked itself loose from my finger with the rain.
My wings limp and sodden, I peel myself from the roof tiles, and slowly make my way towards the roof hatch, my head ringing with the onset of a cold, but also the final words of Ulorian after they fished out us from our watery demise.
“I have been magnamious.”
“Remember that-The Rivers ARE Everywhere. Just because you can’t see them doesn’t mean They don’t exist!”
Slowly I lift the hatch and carefully lower myself inside, glancing up as a flash of lightning strikes the sky, illuminating the innumerable rain drops as they fall.
“Become more powerful for fucks sake.”
“I still don’t like you.” I hear myself again say as I lower the hatch above me.
“I still don’t care.” Comes the final recalled response of the Archfey, as the hatch closes, and I sneeze.
