Markas's look of awkward nerves gives way to a big toothy grin.
"Great! And thank you.... I always loved practicing with his sword and 'graceful' was exactly what I was hoping to achieve with the design."
Markas, being the trusting person he is, fishes out the 25gold and hands it to Milo with a smile on his face.
"3 days then!"
At this he has a moment of thought...
"Actually, would you mind if I stuck around to watch your work? I dont actually have anything else going on in town besides this...."

"I'll give you some advice for free, son - don't pay until there's something to buy." He puts the gold back into Markas's hand and pats it closed. "What if if isn't how you wanted it, or not of high quality? Not that I'm saying either of those will happen here! I know my way around a forge, don't you worry. But there's some out there who would take advantage of a young lad like you. Wait till I've finished your sword, check it, and if it's up to scratch pay me then.
As for watching the work, you're welcome to stay so long as you don't get in the way. I don't need you getting burned or cut or dropping something on your foot. And aside from that it's hot, repetitive work. I won't take offense if you slope off half way through."

"Aha.... thankyou" as Markas slips the coin back away. "I'm so used to being in a close-knit community I forget to be wary of others truthfulness sometimes.... but your honesty is appreciated and I'm positive I will be more than happy with your work!
And of course, I will stay out of your way... we never had a Smith where I grew up and would just be interested to see the work.... particularly to see this take shape!"

A loud banging echoes through the workshop. A large figure can be seen darkening the doorstep, looking only slightly awkward.
“Anyone in? I’ve come to inquire ‘bout a job.”

"Well, there's no time like the present. Have a seat on that stool, and I'll get started."
The stool is about two thirds the size of what would be comfortable for a human, rough cut but thick and sturdily built. As Milo moves to build up the heat in the forge there is a loud banging at the doorway, and a shadow falls across the smithy floor.
A loud banging echoes through the workshop. A large figure can be seen darkening the doorstep, looking only slightly awkward. “Anyone in? I’ve come to inquire ‘bout a job.”
Milo takes in the tall, gangly form strung with muscle.
"Ho there big fella. I think I remember you, Baine isn't it? We met once in Port Ffirst. Sorry to disappoint, but I'm not hiring right now."

With a smile Markas takes the seat, albeit awkwardly, finally settling on sitting while crossing his legs on the floor around the stool, until Bain comes in with a commotion.
His face lights up as he sees who it is, "Bain! What are you doing here!?"

"Hiring? What- Oh, my fault, should have used my words better, I-" "Baine! What are you doing here?!"
"Markas, you ghost punching mother fucker!" A massive smile stretches across the half-orc's face and you can see him ready to go in for some sort of physical greeting before taking a look at his surroundings and visibly restraining himself. (He reaches out for a modest low-five instead.)
"I'm here to inquire- no, sorry, that's what I said before wasn't it? And that didn't come across right." He turns back to Milo and tries again. "Milo, my good man! I'm here to ask about a job for you, perhaps. As in, I'd like to pay you. To make something. For me." Baine's struggle has always been to get the ideas inside his head to come out in proper words that other people can understand.
"Ok, so I don't even know if this is something that exists or something that you know how to make or have the materials for BUT I thought it couldn't hurt to ask right? So, I'm super cling-clangy right? Markas here can attest to that, I'm pretty damn good in a fight but if you ask me to be a bit sneaky it's all fucked 'cause of this damn chainmail." Here Baine does a little shoulder shimmy to illustrate exactly how loud the aforementioned mail is. "And I can't take it off 'cause it's my job to be up front with the monsters y'know? So, I guess what I'm asking here is, could you make me chainmail that isn't loud?
He hasn't pause for breath once.
"Is it possible. How long would it take. And what would it cost." He pauses for a moment to make sure he asked all the correct questions. "Yeah, I think that's it."

"Ghost punching?" Milo looks to Markas with a raised eyebrow. "Seems there's more to you than meets the eye. You'll have to tell me that tale while I work on your sword."
Turning back to Baine, Milo raises his hands in a gesture of sympathy. "I feel your pain, friend. I've not long been rid of that problem myself, and that was purely a matter of luck." He waves towards two sets of chainmail hung on stands near the stairs.
The set on the left is not so different to Baine's, albeit with recognisably dwarven touches. "That one on the left, I made myself, back before I came to Daring. I'm damn proud of it, but it doesn't half make a racket."
The one on the right, however, looks almost like a silvery woollen shirt, the links are so fine, containing faint floral patterns in the design. "That one I received as a prize, my part in these Amaranthine Games that are going on. It's mithral, and I never thought I'd see a whole mail set of it in my life." He picks up a part of the mithral mail and runs it through his fingers. There's a whispering on the edge of hearing, but nothing like the jangling you'd expect from that much metal. "If you get caught sneaking around in that, it's your own bloody fault. And it's not for sale, before you ask," he adds with a grin.
"The way I see it, you've got a few options. One is you put up with your current mail and work on making yourself quieter. Second is I pad out your chainmail, but for the amount of padding you'd need you'll be rolling around the fight, so probably not much use to you. Third option is I make you a good solid, single piece breastplate, nothing to bang about or jangle. Not quite as much protection as mail, but if you know how to move in it you'll be right as rain. Expensive work though. The last option is you somehow find enough mithral to make a suit of armour! Which frankly is unlikely to say the least."
[Mechanically speaking, a breastplate is AC 14 + Dex mod, so if your mod is +2 or better you've equalled chainmail without the stealth disadvantage.]

Baine’s Eyes go wide for a bit, taking all of this in. He seems to stick on the thought of a full Mithral armor and goes a bit vacant for a minute. Indulging himself. Then he shakes himself abruptly and replies, “Milo, you’re a bit of a genius, anyone ever tell you that? Good man. Breastplate it is!”
He then gestures to the various pieces of leather armor complementing the chain mail he’s wearing. It’s a dark brown with silver embroidery spelling out words like ‘HONOR’, ‘WARRIOR’ and ‘STRENGTH’. (Very tasteful and very cool, if you ask Baine. No one’s ever asked Baine.)
“Could you make it sort of match this one? I’m very keen on what the kids are calling ‘the aesthetic’ of it all.” He shoots a look at Markas. “Bogg taught me that word.” Turns back to Milo. “Put your own spin on it, like, just make it match, yeah? And how much d’you reckon?”

Milo smiled at the compliment. "Not a genius, just well taught. There won't be much visible leather on the breastplate, won't need it, but I have some other ideas. The real question is how quickly do you need it? I can knock out a bog standard breastplate in two, maybe 3 days. If you want it to actually look good, some proper shape, some nice detailing, that'll obviously take longer. Depending on how detailed you want it, it could take the best part of two months. After I finish Markas's commission, of course," he nods towards the half elf. "And of course time is money. Your choice my friend."

Markas smiles at Milo before turning to Bain "I'm having Milo make that sword I was telling you about! Should only be 3 days by his reckoning though... "

Baine thinks on this. He thinks on it hard. It takes a little while. It looks like it might hurt. Eventually he seems to reach a conclusion and his face clears up again, smile fixed firmly in place.
“Tell you what, Milo. You put as much time into this magnificent breastplate as 450 gold will get me, I leave the design up to you,” he gets suddenly serious, “but make it COOL yeah?”
He holds a large hand out for a shake. “Payment upon delivery?”

He holds a large hand out for a shake. “Payment upon delivery?” Markas narrows his eyes and takes a mental note at this point.... Milo was right.

"I'll put my heart and soul into it Ser Baine Cinderwood 🔥🌼, you have my word." Milo clasps Baine's hand in his own, which surprisingly isn't much smaller. "It's a deal. I'll send word when it's ready to collect, but feel free to drop by if you want to see it in progress. Are you still staying at the Seashank?"

“Oh, I’m still at seashank alright. And with most of my funds going into this beauty your making for me I reckon I’ll be there for a good while yet!” Oddly enough, Baine says this like it’s good news. “Send word for me there when it’s done, if you can. I’ll be dropping in if I haven’t heard from you in a while. I’ll let you get back to work then!”
