It took them the better part of the morning to do it, but the sign was finally hung outside, swinging gently over the street. A hefty thing it was, all carved in dark mahogany, but intricatedly detailed for all its weight. On it the shape of an anvil, crested with a bright flame - all present recognised it as the symbol of Moradin, the All Father. Laid over the anvil, head sitting in the middle of the fire, was the image of a hammer, showing the dual purpose of the building - a place of work, and a place of worship, bound up in the act of craftsmanship.
Milo stepped back, and admired the sign. An expensive purchase from the human warlock Mystigon he had met in Port Ffirst, but now that it was in place he had no doubt he had made the right choice. It was perfect, and would hopefully be a better indicator of his talent than the horseshoe nailed above the door, gap upwards "to catch the luck". "Thanks lads! Great work," he called out to the other dwarves who had helped him set up the new sign. "First round's on me this evening. See you!"
He stepped through into the humble smithy, situated not too far into the small dwarvish sector of Daring Heights. Working for Samed after arrving in Daring Heights had been enlightening, especially in the way of running a business, as Milo had not been involved in that side of things back at Citadel Adbar. But when it came to the actual smithing, Milo had not learned much new, and had yearned for his own place, somewhere to grow. When the previous owner, old Delgar Goldbrand, had died, having reached the grand age of 372, some of the others in that part of town had come to Milo, having learned of his training in the old ways under the masters of Adbar, and had asked if he would take the place on. Clearly Moradin was smiling over him.
It wasn't much, but it had potential. Room to grow. And as Moradin taught, even the meanest ore contains within it the brightest steel.
I'm slightly liberally applying the Clan Crafter feature Respect of the Stout Folk: As well respected as clan crafters are among outsiders, no one esteems them quite so highly as dwarves do. You always have free room and board in any place where shield [mountain] dwarves or gold [hill] dwarves dwell, and the individuals in such a settlement might vie among themselves to determine who can offer you (and possibly your compatriots) the finest accomodations and assistance.

Late one afternoon, a few days after the smithy had been opened, a figure approaches the shop. Drawing a dagger from his belt; he raps the blade a few times against the horseshoe nailed to the doorjamb.
"Anyone in....?"

The door opens on a dwarf, tall for his race but still below 5 feet, wearing a thick leather apron, face and beard both bright red under the coal smut. Looking up at the man, he takes in the broad shoulders, the scarred face.
"Ho, sir, good day to you. What brings you to my door?"

“Business, master Smith. I’m new in town and need to stock up on a few supplies. I see you’ve just set up - are you taking commissions yet? It’s nothing too major: a couple of lances and my shield needs re-enamelling”
The man swings a shield off his back. It’s of a curious, home-made design, clearly made to fit the specific contours and measurements of one individual. It’s plain and functional in its aesthetic, with only the rough outline of an open eye embossed on the front.
“I’d do it myself but couldn’t bring my forge or tools with me. Not exactly travel-friendly kit.”

OOC, can I check what you mean by re-enamelling? Enamel is made from glass, and probably not something you use on a shield. What materials is your shield made of?

(The shield is predominantly metal, but the image of the eye on the front is made from a glass-like substance - it's this bit that needs re-enamelling. Darius would have come to Hammerfall because he heard that Milo can work with magic weapons and armour, which the shield is. There's no functional or mechanical element to the enamelling; just flavour. It looks like this but less tacky haha and without the gold edging.) Darius taps the design of the eye on the front of the shield. "Need you to retreat this for me. The colouring is fading and it's delicate work." He hands you a scrap of paper with some instructions about heating temperatures and cooling rates, which materials work best and have the right colouring, and how to apply the use of certain tools. It looks like it's been written by someone who knows their away around a forge. "This is the process I've used before. Think you can get it done?"

Milo runs a finger along the paper covered in scribblings and tiny sketches which, to someone unaccustomed to the ways of the forge, would mean very little.
"Delicate work indeed. I don't typically keep the kind of frit I'd need on hand, probably Gety will have some..." Milo touches the glass eye with the tips of his fingers, muttering under his breath. "Yes, I'm sure he would. Okay, well its not a simple polish job, as you're clearly aware," he adds, waving the paper scrap before handing it back. "The enamelling itself is tricky, but won't take too long once I've got the materials." He props the shield on one side.
"Not many come to a smith asking for glasswork, but you made the right call. Not blowing my own horn but I'd be surprised if there's more than me in town that knows how to do what you're asking. Apart from you of course. And I'm impressed that you did it in the first place! I'd ask where you learned the craft," Milo grins, "but something tells me I'm unlikely to get much of an answer. Anyway, call it 10 gold for the glasswork, and another 10 for each lance. You can pick the shield up in 3 days if you need it sharpish, or at the end of the week with the lances."

"I'm a competent metalsmith, alright, and have been practising for more years than I care to remember - but creating this sort of item is beyond me. When it came into my possession, it was already as you see it now. It has been all I can do over the years to maintain it. As a craftsman of no mean skill, I'm sure you'll take proper care of that shield: it's saved my life on more occasions than I can recall.
End of the week is fine and 30gp is fair. I would have needed it for today - I was planning on attending this Seashell tourney or whatever on behalf of the Council, but I have other business to attended to now."

"That's a shame, I'll be at the same tourney, I'd have liked to see what you can do. Ah well. Another time."
Gratefully accepting the 30 gold, Milo begins to ready the forge for this unusual commission.
[Darius can pick everything up whenever he likes in real time, but for RP purposes it might make sense to wait until at least tomorrow, so Milo can tell him about the tourney. Maybe that exchange can be my write-up!]

"Certainly! I'll need the glass section first so I can get measurements.
Now, if I remember correctly you wanted something a bit like this, correct? However I can also do you something more like this, or even this if you want to get really fancy with it. Of course they'll take longer to make, and time is money my friend. So, what do you say?"

A tall Half-Elf with tattered travelling clothes walks in and spends a few seconds looking around. After looking around he spots the Dwarf who seems to be running the forge.
"Uhhh.... Hi! I was wondering if I could get you to make me something?"

A burst of steam erupts from a glowing sword blade plunged into a barrel of water. The red-headed dwarf holding the tongs at the other end of the blade turns his attention to the travel-worn Half-Elf.
"That depends on what you need, friend. I won't be much use at fixing up those togs of yours," he says, gesturing to the worn and ratty fabric of the Half-Elf's clothing. "But if you're after some weaponry, or some armour, there I can help. Name's Milo," he adds, extending a hand blackened with charcoal dust. "And yours?"

"Markas" he says with a smile, and shakes Milo's hand. "And, no, I'm afraid these old clothes have seen better days but I'll need to find something else to wear soon..." (He stands awkwardly for a moment before realising he still hasn't finished explaining what he's after) "Uhhh, I was actually hoping for a sword? Something like this....." (Markas hands over a drawing on a small piece of paper with a sketch of a Falchion on) "Its modelled on one of my masters personal weapons and I'd love to have something like it, with a few small changes of course.... I have some engravings I'd like included that I've sketched out as well if possible. Is this something you could recreate for me?"

Milo takes the paper from Markas and studies it briefly. His bushy eyebrows raise in interest.
"An elegant weapon you're after. Unusual shape, more curves than your usual sword, or even a classic falchion. With the shape, the engraving and the pommel hoop, common sense says I ought to ask for 30 gold, but frankly I'm looking forward to the challenge. All the ones who come out here looking for some adventure just want the biggest bit of metal they can swing - it'll be nice to work on something more graceful for a change. Let's call it 25 gold, and you can pick it up in 3 days. Sound fair?"
