Written after the events of ‘So You're a Herald, Now What?’
OBSERVATIONS & EXCERPTS from the JOURNAL of SECOND ASSISTANT ARCHIVIST ORIANNA ÈIRIGH of ASHKHA
We saw Calla in the Fugue Plane when we went to speak to Azharul.
Doctor Ruthenia Truelove — a colleague of my sister’s, and a mage with extensive knowledge on necromantic practices, if a little short sighted in other things — seemed to think the apparition we saw was truly Calla’s soul as such a thing cannot be split into separate pieces.
When we saw her she looked different than the other souls in the Plane. She could not see or hear us, yet Calla was frightened of something. But then a spark of blue fire enveloped her and I knew, somehow, that Kesserax was doing what she could to protect her.
When the time comes — and I pray to the Cosmos that the time will come soon — all the pain Arcravine has caused Calla will be brought back to him for what he has done to them both…
The purpose of our visit to the Fugue Plane was two fold.
One, to get a Soul Carrying Lantern that we can use when we rescue Calla from Arcravine.
The second was for Digs to meet the Judge of the Dead to better understand what happens to the souls of all dragons once they have been slain. I think he learned much… but I also worry about the trauma of his past.
Azharul had Digs judge the life of a bronze dragon’s soul. Though he passed a forgivable sentence, afterwards Digs admitted to us that if he were to pass judgement on himself for the same life lived, he would condemn himself.
The conversation Frigus and I had with Digs after we returned home went… about as well as I could have expected it to. I have seen all sorts of reactions from those who discover they are the Herald of an Archwyrm. Digs being the Herald of Azharul came as no surprise to me, but there is so much Digs has to face before he can give an honest answer to the Guardian of Souls…
