Look, fellow citizens, how they nominate each other and endorse (like) each other’s speeches: it’s just an old boys club to them.
I move we disqualify nominations put forward from candidates. If they truly wanted these positions of authority and maturity, they’d concentrate on nothing else. If you want to represent; represent: if you want to nominate; nominate.
Nominating someone who nominates you back can undermine trust and sincerity. And in this most cosmopolitan of towns, don’t play the race card. We deserve better than that.

Varis steps forward, his plate newly lacquered black with a bloody fist in red across the chest. At his back stand two hard eyed killers, eyes seeking constantly for danger, hands never far from their swords.
"I am not much for politics, but I will say this - to founder too long in the absence of true leadership is to invite ruin. If there are some among you who would wish me to sit on this council, to represent the citizens of Daring who value order, peace and justice, then I will do so gladly. If instead you wish another to take my place, I will not protest, though I warn you this town will not last another year if we do not look to our defences. Today we are weak, surrounded by enemies and opportunists, and if we do not show our strength, and quickly, they will pick the carcass of this city clean and leave our bones for the rats of Port Ffirst to gnaw."
With that the young Half Elf strides from the room, his two soldiers following close on his heels.

*Lachlan looks at the departing figures of Varis and henchmen for a moment or two*
"......Ok, sooooo.......maybe he's a bit too intense right now (someone should probably see if he's ok - him and his militia)....but someone like him! Only less.......zealous......?"

From outside the council chamber comes a slightly flatulent sounding fanfare. The doors creak open and in steps the small blue-skinned Grung known as Grub, a strange looking brass horn in the shape of a serpent clutched in one hand. He clears his throat:
"His Most Magnanimous Serenity, High Plenipotentiary G’Lorth the Magnificent, Lord of the Fetid Marches, High Lurker of the Grung Imperium, and Ambassador to New Daring."
With a flourishing bow, Grub steps to the side to make way for G'Lorth, who strides confidently to the centre of the room.
"Honoured friends, it has come to my attention that following your heroic return to Daring Heights, some political confusion has ensued. I wish, in the spirit of continued amity between our two great nations, to offer my considerable political acumen in resolving these issues as swiftly and as smoothly as possible. I would also note that, should my presence be required in any more permanent capacity - perhaps as an impartial and incorruptable arbiter of council sessions - then I would of course be most happy to lend my expertise to the good people of Daring."
With an extravagant obeisance, the small, golden skinned amphibian strides from the chamber, leaving a trail of perfumed slime in his wake.

Grimes watches and muses....
"Interesting - I thought Lachlan Thorne (or should I call him the 'Varis fan club'?) had departed Daring Heights and yet - here he is shouting his mouth off and complaining about individuals who have given a lot to protect Daring's people and interests - including their own blood - a lot longer than others.
Grimes sighed. He was an honest man. He’d always felt that was one of the bigger defects in his personality. He'd been a copper long before he'd been a Paladin - in fact he still considered himself a copper first - "Paladin" was just a label. He knew about concerned citizens. Wherever they were, they all spoke the same private language, where ‘traditional values’ meant ‘hang someone’.
Sergeant Grimes didn’t like the phrase ‘The innocent have nothing to fear’, believing the innocent had everything to fear, mostly from the guilty but in the longer term even more from those who say things like ‘The innocent have nothing to fear’

Before The Sergeant left the town with Nowhere, he had heard the early talks of the council. He cares not for voting, if someone wants to lead, let them, but he did openly state the most righteous and religious adventure he had fought beside was the Dwarf, Boom Bar. For The Sergeant, no-one was more devout than this stoic dwarf, and he has his nomination should he want it. As for his fellow adventurers for the Wardens, he also stated he would trust none to lead this place. All are too focused on self promotion and gold and ego, save for one. Another person of faith, true and kind and honest. The Halfling, Serephena. The Sergeant would trust in her to truly care for the people of Daring. She would have his nomination. He laughed at Nowhere on the open road as they travelled out of Daring, "Never, never in all the circles of Hel, should you, Nowhere, be allowed a seat of any importance." seraphina , hendopolis

"Because Nowhere, we are driven do destroy things, not build them. Darkness is where we belong, not a construction site." The Sergeant looks to Nowhere, as he snaps his finger, "Oh, I forgot to mention, I passed on that you'd second my nominations." He laughs to himself, but that told Nowhere little if the man was joking or not. Nowhere

While another debate is going on inside the Ettin about who should or should not lead New Daring a scream can be heard from the street, many rush out and see standing in the street a diminutive form.
It's an interesting sight for many, but in some it stirs memories, a dwarf, dressed as a wizard, scrolls and all, but with a great-axe strapped to his back. looking at the empty space where for a long time a small boarded up shop stood, before being whipped away by the explosion, he falls to his knees and screams "You Maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!".
After a few seconds he stands, dusts himself off and turns towards the Ettin, ignoring all and shouting as loud as he could in his croaked voice; "COOOOOOOOLE! Cole! I need a drink! And what the fuck happened to my shop!". Some of the adventurers that have been in Kantas since the start recognise Gara Bronzebeater, or perhaps an ages version of himself, much aged, as if the time HE spent away was longer than time had actually passed in Kantas.
After paying Cole for a rather large number of pints and drinking most of them as fast as they can be brought to him, he is brought up to speed.
"So, Daffles is gone? Good riddance, shame about the town, and my shop though... but what's this council nonsense you mentioned? Surely the idea of having a permanent council of various parties with very biased interests is a waste of time, with a population the size of Darings the best way to have democratic system (although, they are fundamentally flawed in their own way) is to have a direct referendum system where all those eligible to vote, would cast a yay or nay vote. Eligibility is another matter, but surely it should have something to do with time invested in the town, any old stranger shouldn't get a say, but any one having spent, I dunno 5 active weeks in the town could be considered invested [Meta: basically level 2 onwards] It's worked for many great civilisations over the millennia..."
He finishes his drink, chatting to Cole about goings on in town and his own doings and then wanders out to the location of his old shop, standing there huming and harring for a second he finaly seems to make a decision.
With a stamp of his left foot the earth erupts around him, spraying stone and earth onto the until recently clear and smooth ground, he then pulls out a scroll from his worn leather satchel and reads for a few minutes, occasionally pulling various objects from out of his pockets, iron ore, clay, brass ingots, a large log that doesn't seem like it should fit on his person. Suddenly the scroll in his hand burst into smoke and before the eyes of the various bystanders a house formed itself from the various materials at his feet. It was a two story house, including balcony, shutters, clay tiles, wooden shutters and dark wood door complete with brass knocker. He took a moment to admire his work, shrugged and stepped in, a small bell rang out as the door opened. A few moments later he climbed out onto the balcony, light the long and intricately carved pipe he pulled from his robes and sat on a small stool staring off into the distance... suddenly he tapped himself on the head, as if remembering something, waved his hands around and guided a wooden sign through the air that hung itself above the front door. The sign read "ORGaSM Ltd."

The whole time a calico cat was sitting on the window sill, watching attentively with its piercing green eyes. In a heated discussion nobody noticed how Daisy appeared on that spot. She ran her hand through her long brown hair and everyone present felt a puff of cool breeze on their necks. This pause gave her a chance to speak up. She spoke softly but firmly in her usual manner:
"I came to this town to escape the closed and unwelcoming lifestyle of my dwarven relatives. In the time that I spent here I've met many honest, fair, brave people and always felt included. It hurts me to witness how one's merit is dismissed based on the nuances of their very being and mistakes they've made.
The real judgement of character comes from how they deal with those mistakes.
While Lachlan the Bard entertains the crowd well, he does not speak on its behalf and everybody's opinion deserves to be heard. I personally think diversity on the council is key. By that I mean diversity in skill, beliefs and experience, as well as race and gender. Some people like to speak of race. I think no race, tiefling or not, should constitute a large part of the council. But no race should be under-represented either, especially in our town.
I do not know Nowhere well, and while his help in reclaiming Daring Heights is indisputable, I cannot speak of his motivations.
What I do know is that Dorian and Rholor fought for our town bravely alongside me and if it wasn't for them, some of you and our friends could've been dead now. From many times I've met them, I believe their hearts are in the right place and their judgements are fair. I don't doubt that their contribution to Daring Heights will be outstanding and I will support their nominations to sit on the council.
I deeply hope Aurelia accepts her nominaton too. I do agree with a suggestion to give another position to an adventurer and not army, as many of us are trained for battle anyway. With that I encourage those who care about our town, speak up constructively and look at facts not emotions. Those who speak the loudest often have nothing to say."

(Right, just so everyone’s clear: Lachlan never mentioned or cared about race. Others brought up race. Lachlan disliked the fact that a small number of characters were dominating the debate and nominating each other.
Dorian and Nowhere do not reckon amongst the most diplomatic of Daring’s inhabitants: brave, powerful, knowledgable - yes; diplomatic, not so much. Kthanks).

Meta and time out moment here.
This thing is becoming seemingly quite politically charged in its undertones. And it seems like some people should take some steps back.
Another thought occurs on a potential resolution. Most of the DMs have an NPC character they use for giving quests, all of which represent fairly powerful entities (one of the reasons I've revived Gara). Why not have them form the council?

<OK out of character for a moment, I just wanted to clear up the racial overtones coming from Nowhere, to put it in context for some of the newer players. A number of months ago there was some very racially charged sessions that some of the higher level characters were involved with - where non humans within Daring were being targetted by humans, and groups trying to convince Daring to be taken back from the non humans. These sessions occurred immediately after the last large battle that Daring faced. Nowhere was involved in those sessions, and for him, the conversations coming up in the council debate remind him of what happened before.>

(All right then, all. As long as we know that there's history, in game and maybe out of game, that not everyone knows and roleplaying may come from different sources, just be a little cautious. We're all friends here.) So the Council idea seems to be sticking. To solidify this, the merchants and the townsfolk have made their decisions through various means (the formation of a first council is often a little messy). So here are the seats as they currently stand: Merchant Seat 1 - Kensington of Port Ffirst Merchant Seat 2 - Tabetha, representative of the Guild of the Emerald Tradition Merchant Seat 3 - Jean Auber, of the noble house of Auber, extensive landowners in Daring Heights Citizen Seat 1 - Aurelia - Citizen of note, portal mage and scholar Citizen Seat 2 - Samed the Blacksmith Citizen Seat 3 - High Priest Rholor of the Temple of Selune Warden Seat 1 - Captain Cordelia Jadefist - head of the armed forces of Daring Heights (it was decided that the Watch were servants of the city and should not also hold political office) Warden Seat 2 - Adventurer Seat One: Warden Seat 3 - Adventurer Seat Two: It seems there's little consensus on who could represent you all successfully, which is interesting. Two seats are now available, so perhaps there's less of an issue about finding a single point of agreement?

To clear this up: Dorian's feelings about race come from recent experiences in Daring as mentioned by Derek, and his own personal character history. DnD is a world where Tieflings are often mistrusted and maligned for their appearance. Dorian would've experienced this in the past and it influences his feelings now.
If this was a step too far to mention this then I apologise, just trying to play the character. I hope this makes sense.
Peace
Sean-Paul
