BB sits on the floor of her temporary room at the Canvenous Seashank with her spell book balanced on her knee while concentrating on her recently drawn arcane circle, the smell of burning still clinging to her clothes. A small globule of light emerges and hovers over the circle, rapidly expanding out to the shape of small bird as its light dims. Eventually an excited magpie is formed as BB blinks herself out of her trance.
âHey Blue, how was home, anything exciting happen while you were there?â Only trills and little squarks are spoken back from Blue.
âAh the usual then, glad everythingâs in good form though. You did miss some interesting stuff here while you were gone, no we didnât find the spider silk merchant ladyâs body in the temple, but I think she got turned into one of those horrid yellow flowers that killed Wil. Gosh, I canât believe I just said a flower was horrid!â At this point Blue has moved onto BBâs lap for head scritches and gives encouraging nods whenever BB pauses in her spoken thoughts.
âWell you saw that floating brain thing, trying to scare us away, and the hooded creature. Between me, Bones and Bogg we finally managed to bring them down as Taz finished off those flowers. He seemed especially spurred on when Wil went down. You know, Iâm not one to blazingly run in with spells firing off but those things had lined the walls with the acolytes intestines, intestines!! They were so young as well and I couldnât help them. I should pay my respects, itâs the least I can do.â
At this point BB has moved onto the bed to get a better look out the window, towards the direction where the smoke from the temple of two faiths had only recently stopped.
âWhere was I again? Ah yeah, the brain. So as it finally went down I had a vision, it was a view into the Frog Bog with these Bollywogs chanting and a man? He was middle aged with tan skin and somehow he was looking right at me, saying the ritual was complete and the Messenger was here. Then this shadow appeared in his place and started growing larger and larger as the Bullywogs all dropped dead.â
Still staring out the window, she lets out a deep sigh âThen we did something Iâm worried we might regret, we made a deal with the high priest of Umberlee to get Wil back. Taz insisted we didnât have to get involved, but not helping almost felt like abandoning both of them and that just felt wrong to me. Supposedly weâll be called upon to fulfill a favour to gain respect for Umberlee at any cost, whatever that means. Yeah, yeah, I did suggest pamphlets but that didnât seem morally ambiguous enough for them.â
BB gets up from the bed at this point and slowly walks over to the slightly wonky table on the other side of the room, a jade shard etched with runes set upon it. âAnd then thereâs this thing, luckily Jedd agreed to hand it over. Yeah I agree he seemed strangely twitchy about the whole situation, but that might just be his reaction to losing money so I donât think we need to worry too much. Oh right, I think the shard is a homing beacon for demons or a specific demon, and that ritual that I saw might be linked to it activating. It did come from the spider silk merchants that were involved in all this and the runes do mention The Messenger.â BB then sets Blue down to perch on the chair by the table and starts back for the bed. âNow do you mind keeping an eye on that thing while I write in my journal? Oh and remind me to give Wil a get well bouquet before we leave, with no yellow flowers of courseâ. Blue gives a quick nod and a chirp and turns to look straight at the shard, unmoving, as the subtle sounds of quill on paper fill the room.
