encamped off the Kundar Road
Working on SQ matters for an hour or so this morning, then took Zozo to the wagoneers’ yard to answer the notice of this Lief Grinthorn. He turns out to be a kobold of Kundar, returning thither with a small caravan of trade goods, his previous escort having abandoned him to take more lucrative (and more dangerous) work in the K’ul Goran war.
Also answering the notice:
Old friends and new! Ba seems older, perchance a little graver; Z more lively even than before yet also at times stricken with melancholy. Ba, S, & F all more heavily armoured than when last I saw them; Bu more tired, and now accompanied by a small floating gem of some kind. Ba also now has a small stable with him: a fine but ill-tempered warhorse (named something like Garrey) & a large thick-haired dog (Franckey or similar). S very taken with the latter. Also travelling with the caravan LG’s husband (Tord) and their 3 dragonborn slaves.
Fee agreed: 70 gp (raised from opening offer of 50) and food and transport withal.
We journeyed uneventfully until sundown, then made camp here, a little off the road. After scouting the site, I returned to find Ba & S preparing a contest of strength that they called ‘arm-wrestling’. I wagered 5 sp on Ba, as did LG; no one would bet on S except the man himself! S had the best of it to begin with, but angered Ba with a foolish quip about his dog, and was soon defeated (and paid me & LG without demur). Next TG cooked a hearty fish stew & we all had a merry supper, talking of the war, the country of K’ul Goran, trade, &c. Z at first seemed bored by all this so I steered the talk to books, which I’m pleased to say enlivened her somewhat. In the mean while, Ba went to talk to the slaves, who ate separately; the effort seemed to meet little success for he soon came back.
Z urged that I take up the ‘arm-wrestling’ challenge, which I was happy to do for her amusement though with little hope of victory; she seemed well pleased and conjured a rose from nothing for me! She nominated F as my opponent, who tried to demur but eventually agreed on condition of exchanging the grappling with a sort of competitive acrobatic display. Methinks they would have fared better at the wrestling, for I came out a clear victor!
Z has set up some kind of magical alarm about the camp and will keep watch all night, for she claims to need no sleep at all! F will join her for the first two watches then wake me for the third.
