To Kinrin Lawmantle,
I write with my thanks for allowing my companions and me into your fine city this past Sixthday. Though I am glad we were able to assist in delivering Ferrona Mine back to you, as well as the bodies of the miners slain by those cowardly Duergar, I admit I gained great joy simply being in a Dwarven city again. It has been a full year since I left my home in Citadel Adbar to journey west, as I was commanded by the Dwarffather, and though I have made associates here the place is chaotic and reactive. I longed for the order of a Dwarf fortress, even for a little while, and I found it in Vorsthold.
I hope that my talk of home during our conversation was of interest, perhaps even of help, though our cities endure the reverse situation of the other – Vorsthold repels the hordes of the Underdark, while Adbar suffers the attacks of orcs on the surface. The ancient tunnels through the Underdark left by our forefathers have become our connection to other Dwarf communities, used for trade and travel, though of course even these routes are not to be taken as entirely secure. I pray to Moradin that one day the same may be said for Vorsthold.
I hope also that my companions did not sully the name of Daring Heights through any of their actions. They mean well, and explained to me on the return journey north through the Feythorn Woods (the name that settlers have given to the forest north of the surface cave entrance to Vorsthold – I assume it is known to you by a different name, and I would be intrigued to learn it) their real and true interest in Vorstborn culture. They were especially taken with the Honoured Dead, a concept with which I struggle, though I do understand the necessity and the logic behind it. It is true that even since the Thunder Blessing began to increase our numbers, a Dwarf couple is unlikely to raise more than one child in their lifetimes, so it makes a certain sense that a Dwarf be used to their full potential even after death, especially in such dire circumstances as yours. I am honoured to be a product of the Thunder Blessing alongside my brother Morgus. I pray for a natural increase among the Vorstborn, so that the dead might be honoured in rest rather than in continual battle.
Forgive the length of this letter, I am sure you have much to be getting on with, and do not need my prattlings taking up your valuable time. I thank you for the adamantine hammer – it has been many years since I have seen the like, and none of this quality. I shall wield it with honour.
Honour be on you, your clan, and your city.
