30 Eleint, 1396 AR
at the Gilded Mirror, Daring Heights
Morning: exercises of mind and body in my room. Reminding myself of some of the techniques suggested by GV. Then some discourse with L, principally concerning Stoneleaf & related matters. Also reviewed gem sales to Ambershield thus far & agreed to continue for now, review again around Moon’s Feast; and discussed the petitioners for elevation (or reappointment) to this town’s council.
In the first group, Kensington seems most beneficial: he has supported the present low tariffs and imposts, can be counted on to maintain government for the benefit of enterprise, while he his own business is not likely to be in contention with the Company’s. We also agreed to favour Thovian (a harmless seller of wares whose views also seem inclined to free commerce) and Auber (a tedious man whose agrarian interests have no conflict with the Company’s business and who, like Kensington, may be expected to maintain the current regime). For the rest: Winslow of course must be removed from power if possible; Underwood’s talk of greater interference in commerce is most unwelcome; Brough is of like mind to us and would not be the worst choice but might, so L fears, seek to divert exports to the Sword Coast that would otherwise come to Amn through the Company.
The second group is perhaps of less moment. The Coinmaiden’s high priestess is of course the pre-eminent choice. Archselon, though not a woman of business herself, has done much to make this town a home of enterprise and freedom. The smith is neither here nor there; the Tethyrian is probably no great danger but I still do not trust him since his attempt to attain eminence in the court of Night and Magic. It pains me to hold back my favour from our charming host here at the Mirror, for I like him well and his establishment too, but he has spoken too often of higher dues and tariffs. And of course the goblin rabble-rouser would be too great a risk: we must have calm and steady winds.
After noon, ventured out therefore with L to lend our voices in the poll. A curious exercise! More complex than the ballots some companies use to choose their governors. Here I was instructed to mark every contender for the first group of places according to strength of favour, and then the same for the other group. How this will yield three victors from each group I wot not.
Heard a strange rumour that a Ffirstish mage killed in the first skirmishes of the K’ul Goran war has been brought back to life! A townswoman was repeating the story to her companion while they waited for the poll. When I asked the particulars, she knew not the mage’s name but had heard a bird-man (Pieni? or the other, Bones?) in the Ettin speaking of it. Could it be that Mystigon is alive again? Have read of such things of course, and there is the fund at the temple… but had he such riches? And such forethought withal? It seems hardly to be believed.
Returning to the Mirror, caught in storms and deluge. Came back soaked and miserable. Fear a chill has settled on my weak chest. Managed some work on the ledgers but by evening felt feverish. If not improved by the morn, may not be able to go to K’ul Goran as I had purposed. Have written a short note for GV to be taken by messenger tomorrow in such event. For now, best I try to rest tonight, so now to sleep.
