Taz had seen a dragon only once, and that was long before he came to Kantas. An ancient bronze, it eclipsed the sun as it flew silently over his ship. His crew had been silent, just standing and watching as it passed. But afterwards, they spoke of it often, and the mixture of fear, awe and respect was imprinted in Taz's mind.
And now he was speaking to a dragon. This one a smaller coral dragon from the feywild with incredible, colour changing scales. He would have admired it's beauty, but there was no time.
"So, where is your other friend?", the dragon asked him. It was a very simple and a very complicated question all at once. He had three companions with him and this is exactly where they all were:
Cheats, the somewhat troublesome Tabaxi, is grappled in the dragon's tail, after trying to steal the dragon's treasure.
Hestia is standing next to Taz, offering a pearl in exchange for Cheats life.
And Faye is invisible, crouching half way in between the other two, dagger drawn. Had the dragon seen Faye? His tone revealed nothing. A lie could be costly, and so could the truth.
Taz tries the lie ('What friend?') only for the dragon to mockingly sweep Faye up from the floor and hold them in her claws.
How had they gotten into this? thinks Taz, They had agreed to explore a small island that was apparently moving with the currents. Then they met some friendly locals, who it turned out were being asked to give a monthly 'tribute' to a dragon living on the island. To Taz, it seemed like a reasonable arrangement for the protection of such a mighty creature, but others in his group felt that there was something needing to be done about it, so they had gone to 'visit' the dragon.
____
In the end they negotiated their way out of their situation, at the cost of killing some 'vermin' in the caves for the dragon (some pesky elementals, it turned out). Its interest had been piqued when Faye mentioned the local dragon-turtle, and a flash of hatred had crossed the dragon's eyes, and after that it paid them much less attention.
Even more curiously, by the time they came back to report their success to the dragon, it had left completely.
Now they were on their way back - almost empty-handed apart from some local fudge and a a map of the island. At least sailing aboard the Drunken Mermaid was a pleasure. He'd spent most of the time with Sherlock, who seemed like someone worth sailing with. He almost asked the captain for a place on the crew, but something inside him told him he wasn't ready yet, and there was still something to be gotten out of this still-new land called Kantas.
