"Dear Thea,
Still alive and well. (Crawling around a mountain side at the moment, in pretty rough shape, long story. But I’m okay.)
Thanks for the letter. You were right. It was from her. It was in orc but I’ve translated it, sending you a copy. Her name was Sharn.
It looks like she might have come to Kantas (but then again maybe that’s just me seeing things that aren’t there, you know?) so I’m gonna start looking, I suppose. She’s probably not alive. But I wanna know what happened to her at least.
Thea, a few years ago Daring was attacked. A bunch of orc tribes joined up and sacked the whole city. I’m really scared of what it would mean if she got caught up in that. What it would mean for me. The Crimson Fist was founded because of that. Varis fought them.
I don’t know what it would mean if my mum was involved. What if she killed innocent people to get to this man she was hunting?
Varis and Sunday says they’re gonna help me look. I’m scared of what we might find."
On the other side of their small fire Varis turns over in his sleep, arm healed but still wrapped and held awkwardly to his chest.
Pieni’s blue form is wrapped up next to him - Traavor and Baine agreed to taking the final watch shift of the night.
The crystalline mountain air is misting in front of Baine’s face, his fingers already protesting the work in the cold. He moves a little closer to the fire and pulls his fur cloak tighter around himself, dragging the Max with him to keep it nearby. It’s been a quiet night and day since they came out of the caves but the unease hasn’t left him yet.
Something rustles in a nearby tree and he starts a little, but Traavor calmly shakes his head. “Just a bird, mate.”
Baine nods and returns to his letter.
"We just came out of some bullshit in the Sunset Spine mountains. Like, we’re still ON the mountain but for the past like three days we’ve been IN the mountain. Supposed to be a scouting mission to investigate this new star that’s been seen up here - turns out some elves needed help to find.. A chair?
I think. And some of the people that got lost. Fuck if I know.
We apparently took the job and went into the mountain caves and then LOST THREE DAYS. We woke up all beat to shit - Varis had his arm and leg broken - and feeling proper worn out. Traav and Pieni was there, and two others that I didn’t recognize at first - this elf named Sky and a woman called Ixcel.
(She has a huge ass snake, it’s really cool. She let me hold it when we got back out.)
We fought some ants that were bigger than horses and smelled weirdly enough to make us all woozy. Did a bunch of flying and climbing through these caves, some of us did some falling as well and almost died (Traavor) and we wandered around for a good long while but eventually we found our way back out. Then Varis and Pieni flew back in and got the chair so we could get paid so that was nice. Maybe the whole thing wasn’t a complete waste of time.
We did kind of miss the start of our next job though; we had a date with Serpentine in Port Ffirst yesterday.
When we got out of the cave Ixcel and her did some mind messaging (that’s a thing) and we got told to wait here for her.
So now we’re chilling on a mountain side, killing time and resting as best we can."
Baine’s teeth begin chattering a little and Traavor wordlessly hands him his flask. Not questioning the seemingly endless supply of alcohol Traav seems to carry with him, Baine readily accepts is. It might be wine. Maybe brandy? He’s not sure.
"Oh yeah, and I survived Sigil. As you can probably tell. That whole place is shaped like a ring. I thought my mind was gonna break when we got there. Like, Sunday had told me about it but someone telling you the ceiling is floor is very different than seeing it with your own eyes.
We spoke to a CREEPY ass guy who collected skulls and talked to them (yes, the skulls talked back) and got some information about these fiends we’re looking for. Went and spoke to a HUGE guy with the dopest weapon collection I’ve ever seen, me and Ghesh swooned a little.
Got offered information in exchange for what sounded like a really dangerous job in the Abyss. Turned it down. Went and spoke to a giant eyeball with loads of cats (honestly don’t even ask) who offered us information in exchange for some favors but that didn’t sound super cool either - you wanna be careful who you owe favours, you know?
Sunday was dead against it but we ended up going to the Abyss to steal a maul for the Huge Guy. In hindsight, maybe not the smartest thing.
There was a fight, of course. I ended up being popped in and out of different planes (so fucking annoying, it was a cool ass fight), Varis almost died a bunch of times and in the end we had to bail out real quick cause there was like… several skeleton dragons coming for us.
Sunday sent eLk to hold them off and I know she can like bring him back whenever she wants but he died, in the Abyss. For us.
And she can like talk to him with her mind. It must have been awful. I was so caught up in my own head what with the letter from mum and the fight and Sigil that I didn’t even check in with her. I feel really bad about that.
When we get back from this job with Serpentine (there’s snakes that need investigating) I’ll make sure to visit her and see that she’s okay, I promise.
We take care of family.
Still running ragged around Kantas. Still alive.
I’ll get this letter to you as soon as I get off this mountain.
All my love,
Baine."
Baine adds another piece of wood to the fire and looks up at the sky.
Dawn is coming, like it always does, and it brings him calm.
