Report by Springwarden Igrainne Blackriver for the Emerald Enclave
In the nation of K’ul Goran, in order to be admitted into an elite special forces unit within the military, a recruit must do a few years of community service as an adventurer, roaming the country to help ordinary people with a variety of tasks, ranging from mending fences to slaying monstrosities, but is forbidden from receiving monetary compensation for their work. These adventurers are known as the Errant Guard. Girelle Veluss, Daring Heights’ ambassador to Zot Goran, hired six adventurers from the Faerunian settlement to join five Errant Guards on a mission to the mountains southeast of the capital, in an attempt to promote cultural exchange between Daring Heights and the Minotaur Kingdom. The author of this report was part of that party.
The Errant Guard is composed of highly skilled and disciplined individuals of diverse talents and backgrounds. They regard themselves as different from other adventurers, because they are doing it to serve their country and not for themselves. As stated before, they cannot receive payment for their services but have no compunctions against looting a body for valuables. Their preferred method of transportation is something they call hill-surfing — a small boat on wheels made to travel swiftly over grassy hills, using its sails to catch strong winds from the Elemental Plane of Air. They were interested in reports of giants, who are known to occasionally kidnap and eat locals, being sighted in these mountains, which are located in the edges of the country and, curiously, not as windy as the rest of it.
In the mountains, the party witnessed a stone giant ordering a number of hill giants to clear rocks and debris from what seemed to be a meeting hall built into a cave. Stone giants of the Faerunian Underdark are typically peaceful creatures who possess an affinity for art and knowledge, having famously built the great library of Gravenhollow, but are known to behave recklessly and sometimes unscrupulously whilst on the surface. When the stone giant in command declared that it was time for lunch, six hill giants separated from the cleaning unit and began running down the mountains. Suspecting that they were going to raid a nearby town, the Errant Guards signalled for the party to go back to the way they came, during which the hill giants noticed their presence and started an altercation.
The combined might of the adventurers felled four giants and forced the remaining two to flee. They also found a living minotaur farmer in one of the dead giants' pouch, apparently being saved for a snack. The Errant Guards were disturbed by the large congregation of giants and the existence of the meeting hall, none of which they have ever seen.
In the interest of keeping K’ul Goran from potentially suffering the same destruction as the Savage Frontier did in the hands of giant-folk in recent years, the author of this report suggests that this matter will require further investigation from the Emerald Enclave. That said, Mr. Veluss seemed interested in using this as an opportunity to build on Daring Heights-Zot Goran relations.
End of report.
