Chapter 1: Drow-ning in Gnolls
It has been about a week since I arrived in this small rural outpost they so kindly call Daring Heights. I got myself to meet some locals and wonder where one could find some fame and glory around these parts, to my surprise, everyone directed me to the same place, the Three Headed Ettin, which I later found was nothing but a tavern equipped with some spare rooms and a "rumour board" what a barbaric and basic concept. I immediately took a note to myself: "This town might need a bit of a shape-up in terms of what being civilised is all about".
I quickly immersed myself as fast as I could in this "culture" and landed myself a last minute job to hunt some Gnolls that had been seen carrying a giant egg in the northeastern wilderness heading west. The party was already ready to depart when one of their adventurers had a mishap in a kitchen of some sorts and I jumped in on the action as fast as I could as a true hero would!
What a curious bunch... maybe I shouldn't've been so rash in choosing my first mission, I shall quickly describe this ragged group so you, my readers have an idea of the perilous situation I've just put myself into.
First there was this shady half-elf with a constant smirk in his face, and so young, so very young! I feel like I could've father him and I consider myself young... anyway, he kept looking inappropriately at any lady that passed by. Without even being sly about it.
Then there was this... person.... wearing a kilt that insisted on doing leg lunges although he wore NO underwear. Just barbaric.
The fellow by the name Leocanto, at first glance he seemed like a decent companion, although all the constant instrument playing didn't take long to get old.
Now here everything starts to look a bit better, this Rhakir fellow looks strong and a capable warrior also Arrakis.... although a bit unsettling in his appearance at least he can strike fear in the heart of his enemies? I hope?
Last but not the least, in weirdness that is, we have Morgan, which I kindly refer to as Grandfather, although he says he's in his 60's I would say he's at least 72 if I had to guess! And he walks ever... so... slow...
Anyway, this is what I signed up for. We set path northwest to try and intercept the Gnoll horde, we travel at a steady pace until we reach a small pocket of forest, maybe 1 or 2 miles in diameter. At this point, Galen the Casanova and Whilhelm, the Kilt Master decided it would be a good idea to stealth ahead, I did let them do this but they failed miserably and got spotted by a wild ranger named Keladry near a clearing where dozens of goblinoid bodies laid dead. After we investigated for a while, we spotted an albino Gnoll in the midst of the corpses. We are definitely on the right path here, we must carry on!
To my surprise, the Kilt Master proves himself very useful at this moment, he successfully leads us through the forest while never losing track of the path the Gnolls took. Nightfall is upon us, we decide to set up camp in what looks like a safe place. I myself was exhausted so when Galen and Arrakis volunteered to keep watch with Keladry I immediately went to sleep. Never again shall I do this, the bunch failed to spot an incoming threat and we were attacked by four creatures that seemed to be disfigured by darkness, created in the abyss, pulled from another realm. Although these creatures where hard to fight and caused grievous Wounds to many of us, Arrakis proved himself a great warrior and stood up on his own after receiving a fatal blow. As for Galen.... I had to save his life when he got knocked unconscious.
Although we escaped this attack in good shape, this might be an omen of something bigger starting in these woods.
On the next day, after a fruitful rest, we set our path northwest once more and we reach the foothills of some mountains, as we step through its passings, we overhear two albino Gnolls conversing about what we immediately assumed to be Drow, apparently the Gnolls were collecting the eggs for the Drow and in return they would give them great power.
Galen surprised me at this point, he managed to be stealthy enough to overhear conversations from the Gnoll camp and figure out that this entire conundrum was not what it seemed, the Drow were plotting to trick the Gnoll and no long-lasting power would be granted onto them.
Having this information at our will, we devised a plan to turn the Gnolls against the Drow and start a riot. Galen would disguise himself as a Gnoll and accuse the Drow of being liars and mischievous schemers. On paper, the plan was flawless, nonetheless, the lack of experience young Galen showed in deception doomed us to fight the entire camp! Thank Selûne Keladry was there with us, she quickly dispatched a large portion of the camp while we dealt with the rest. After an intense combat where myself, Rhakir and Arrakis were stopped by Gnolls as we were running to the camp, Leocanto, Galen and Wilhelm managed to survive long enough for us to reach the camp and defeat the remaining enemies.
Morgan insisted on letting a Drow priestess of Lolth live and take her hostage, so we brought her, as well as 5 giant slimy eggs, which up close I could easily identify as Froghemoth eggs, back to Daring heights and we're still deciding what to do with this situation at the time I'm writing this chapter.
In conclusion, I think that for a first adventure the events I described were a bit too intense for my liking, I'll make sure I'll pick something more relaxed for next week, i saw a notice today at the Three Headed Ettin that someone needed escort to the stone quarry. Sounds easy enough and the payment is good, I'll provide my services to this cause.
Oh and of course, the people I fought alongside with, this time, although each one with his flaws, ended up not being too bad afterall. Second note to self, "judge people less by first impressions". I think some of them are also joining for the escort to the quarry, let's see how our relationship grows in the next chapters.
It is all for now,
