"Designated Sailors"
14th Entry in the journal of Markas Virnala
It was nice being back on the sea again. Though with how much Drink was going around, I'm not sure how Tugark actually managed to get us back without wrecking somewhere.
Baine got a bunch of us together to go check out some Beach resort called Lightening Bay. I think after all the drama with the dragon and him moving to Daring lately, he wanted a way to chill out maybe. I was happy for it too if I'm honest.
We managed to convince Tugark, another Half Orc with a small ship to come along and take us; Baine, Ghesh, a Half Elf Rogue called Traavor and myself. Urso was supposed to come along too but he show up in the end. Probably find something else to keep himself entertained!
It wasn’t too far away and Tugark seems a very capable sailor. The rest of us barely had to do anything the whole way there. The resort itself looked really nice. A wide and sprawling beach with a soft rolling wave at its edge. The beach itself was dotted with people and loungers. I can see why people come here for a break. There seemed to be a festival going on so we managed to get about without the normal entry fees, according to one of the people we spoke to, but that didn’t stop us naturally making a simple thing more difficult than it should have been.
As Tugark sailed us up to a small jetty with ramp on for us to walk down, Baine seemed to be panicking about losing Frankie in the sea and was talking of carrying him through the water. The Ghesh jumped in and was saying he would take Frankie and the conversation changed and suddenly we are talking about Baine jumping in and handing Frankie down. The entire of course Frankie seemed to be having the time of his life being the centre of attention. IT was a good few minutes before we collectively realised we could just use the ramp and avoid the whole scenario.
Once on the beach, we could see a lot of what was going on finally. Close to us was a large tent with a sign that read "Spicy Shrimp Showdown" and had quite a crowd gathered in it. Past that, there were a bunch of loungers leading along to a games area, most notable was some sort of structure that a HUGE man was sat next to. Past that was, in the distance what looked like a giant Crab? No one seemed to be bothered by it though so we decided not to rush to get to it. Some of us where hungry so dropped into the Spicy Shrimp Showdown.
This turned out to be an eating contest, eating some spicy food, with each round getting spicier than the last. We were all feeling pretty competitive so we all entered. The rules were pretty straight forward but somehow I still messed it up….
We weren't allowed to leave and we had a glass of water we could drink if we gave up. I made it through the first round easily and was fine in the second but got distracted and ended up drinking my drink not thinking. Traavor seemed to drop out around the same time, leaving Baine, Ghesh and Tugark in the running. The next round was hotter Shrimp still and looked like a close thing but suddenly Baine cried out in pain and downed his drink.
Ghesh and Tugark went through to the final round that had a surprisingly big crowd of people watching! The Shrimp was dished up and on 3 they ate them whole…. The tension built as everyone waited for someone to cave first, until finally….. Ghesh grabbed for the water! Amongst a cheer from the crowd, Tugark clapped Ghesh on the back congratulating him on getting so far before the judges came to give him his prize of 50GP
The rest of us were given complimentary drinks, something sweet with citrus juices and Rum in called a Daiquiri. It was actually really nice! For his part, Tugark ended up putting all his winnings behind the bar to create a tab for us later in the day.
Heading out the tent and down the beach we stopped at the weird structure with the huge guy stood next to it. Turned out it was a Goliath with an awesome Mohawk called Sinine who has a strength contest setup. Seemed pretty cocky with himself and had a grand prize of a custom shield. The basic idea being we had to hit the base of this machine with a hammer sending something upwards and we have to hit a bell at the top. We all had a few attempts but couldn't quite manage it. Baine tried a few swings with no luck, I tried to see if I could build some momentum into the swing by flipping forward into it but still no luck. Ghesh flexed the way he does and beat both me and Baine scoring himself a small prize before Tugark one ups him and gets a slightly bigger prize (that also went behind the bar).
Traavor tried a similar approach to me, rolling forward to bring some momentum into the swing but only ended up hitting Sinine's toe…. But he literally barely even noticed it. He is crazy big.
Determined not to be beaten, especially since Ghesh asked and Sinine said no one had ever won, we all took another swing at it. Baine actually managed to match Tugark this time and was happy with that, running off to teach Frankie some commands. I tried anther flip but didn’t fare any better than the first round. Traavor tried to sneak up behind it to see if that would help somehow? What's worse is it obviously worked as Traavor hit the bell and won the shield!
Sinine looked at a little upset at having to give the shield away but turned out he was more upset at giving it to Traavor. He hoped someone like Ghesh would win it. Not that it mattered, Traavor gave it to ghesh anyway. Tugark offered to spar Sinine to see if it would cheer him up and they settled for an arm wrestle instead. Tugark is a big guy but Sinine just towered over all of us. It was fun to watch as Tugark slammed Sinine's hand down and won. These people I find myself around these days just seem to know no limits with how strong they are becoming.
Anyway, Tugark offered Sinine to come drinking with us and since he didn’t have any prizes to offer anymore he joined us as we moved along the beach still.
As we set off along the beach again, we could see Baine having a little bit of a debate with someone about a sandcastle that Frankie had destroyed. Turns out it was another competition going on and Frankie had ruined their entry. To repay them, Baine offered to help build a new one and forego any of the prizes to them. They seemed a little hesitant until Ghesh offered as well, and so they signed up under that team. The rest of us decided to make our own team and registered in for the competition to, under the name "The Sand Blasters"
This was actually a fun activity to get involved in. I haven't done much painting lately so felt nice to do something creative. Tugark, being the wall of muscle he is walked off and soon came back with mountains of sand for us to use. Traavor was overseeing the general design of what we were building, making space inside the castle for him to hide in (I'm not sure what was going on with this…) while I was adding the finer details. It ended up getting a bit… well, massive, with the amount of sand Tugark was heaving in. We couldn’t reach the tops in the end so I had to jump and flip around to place the finishing touches! We got carried away with time but thankfully had just about finished when the judges called the competition.
Looking around, there were a few different designs going on, alongside an mass of pretty ordinary sand castles you'd expect on a beach. Baine and Ghesh had helped that team build something that looked a little like a tree-house. Not sure how they got it to stay up but it looked pretty cool. Ours on the other hand had gone full on castle, soaring towers, a driftwood moat, windows etched into the sides, small models of people around the inner courtyards, seashell decorations around the ramparts and a flags perched on the higher towers.
3rd place went to a pretty big design further along the beach. It was pretty good and quite big but was a long shot from what we had created, winning them 50GP between the 3 of them on that team. 2nd place went to the team Baine and Ghesh had joined, scoring them 100GP between them but Ghesh and Baine saw none of it as payment for letting Frankie destroy their original entry (this seemed a little unfair in my opinion. I'm sure they wouldn't have done so well without the help they got in the end).
And we got 1st place!!! One of the judges came over in awe asking where we learned to do this? I said the monastery was keen on promoting the arts but to be fair we never had sand building classes back there. Baine heard this and made a comment about them not teaching us to hit things… it was a joke of course but none the less a little hurtful. Still I can see why he said it. I haven't exactly been on form lately…
Anyway, the judge seemed weirdly into sandcastles…. Even said he wrote a book about them? He gave me the 1st place prize (100GP and a seashell), completely ignoring Tugark and Traavor and said he'd love to speak to me later… not sure what about. Now I think on it, I never did speak to him again!
The seashell was an interesting one. When I asked what it was, he said it allowed you to speak directly to someone, even far away. They would be the only one to hear what you said and they could even whisper back to you when you used it! Otherwise he said you could hear the ocean in it if you put it to your ear, creating a very calming effect. A strange reward but I was happy with it anyway. Since I kept the shell, I gave the money to Tugark and Traavor but Tugark ending up putting this behind the bar in the end as well!
Making our to the end of the beach we finally came to that massive crab we saw earlier and could now see it was some sort of metal contraption but very different to the Modrons we saw in the games. They were alive and sentient…. This just seemed able to move on its own without any real sentience. There were bundles of smaller versions too skittering around the sand around it. There was a gnome stood nearby who introduced himself as Philber, the guy who created the crab. He made some snide comments to Sinine (Seems the two have a history) and explained he basically made it for people to fight but no one was interested so was considering paying people to try it out. Then he saw how excited we all were about fighting a giant metal crab and was instead worried about us (Guess they don't get too many adventurers here).
He explained basically he is trialling his creation out and needs to see how well it works. Seemed a little suspect to me, why would you need to make a giant mechanical Crab and then test it? But either way, I was still interested in fighting it to test myself too.
We were shown to a ring where we could fight, the rules being if we willingly leave, we submit, otherwise, he would try not to hurt us but warned it could be dangerous. Sinine decided to sit this out so he posted up nearby with Frankie and Hoop to watch. By now most of the group was already gearing for a fight so don't think they heard much of the rules. Seeing a commotion building a bunch of people started over to us to watch just as we got started!
As soon as we got the go ahead, all of us except for Traavor rushed the crab and started attacking it with everything we had. It's metal body was causing some of our attempts to bounce off but we quickly put a lot of dents in it while Ghesh breathed acid all over it. Meanwhile Traavor fired off his Crossbow and seemed to be trying to dig himself a small hole for some reason? Out of all of us though, Tugark was absolutely decimating this thing, to the point it pretty much ignored the rest of us. It swung out with its claws trying to grab Tugark and Ghesh but they managed to dodge out the way in time.
Meanwhile, the army of smaller crabs had swarmed around us and were trying to attack us… but they were so tiny they didn’t really much of a difference to anything. A few of us had already said we wanted to keep one so while fighting we were actively trying not to step on them! I'm sure I saw Ghesh bend down to one trying to attack his leg, him pretending to be hurt while a small 'cheer' went up from the crabs.
As we continued attacking the crab, Tugark swung his great axe and connected with the crab, causing a loud CLANG to echo out around us. The crab shuddered for a moment before crumbling into pieces in front of us. Tugark climbs up on top and sits on it like a throne while the rest of us celebrate, turning to see Traavor ducking in his little makeshift trench, his head just sticking up over the sand! Phil was distraught that we destroyed the crab but his complaints were cut short by a rumbling as the sand nearby erupted! We looked round to see two… crab people? They were like something from a nightmare. They were huge, even taller than Sinine, with huge pincers and four legs, covered in what looked like hard scales ending in a flat tail. It's head though, where the mouth was supposed to be, was a mess of writhing tentacles.
Baine and Ghesh wasted no time and charged for them but both used their huge claws to just pick them up off the ground and…. I don't know what. They just brought them up to their faces and started pawing at them with their tentacles…. Whatever it was Baine seemed REAL angry about it but Ghesh just completely froze up and stopped moving.
Tugark and me then rushed in to help them out, I went straight for the one holding Ghesh since I could already see Baine beginning to thrash about hitting his one. I managed to make a couple of cuts in its hide just as Tugark stepped up between the 2x of them and started swinging his axe at both of them. It seemed to be enough as Ghesh started to move again, giving out a primal scream of rage as he starts swinging his Morningstar at its face!
Between us, we were pretty much swarming the crab monsters but that didn’t stop them from lashing out still. Between them they managed to hit Tugark a few times but he didn’t seem to be too bothered by them (that guy is like a walking wall…) Baine was still screaming into the face of the one holding him swinging his sword while the other actually swung Ghesh at Tugark but only managed to drop him in the process as we all continue our onslaught against them.
While Baine continued to pummel his into the ground, Ghesh and Tugark both assaulted the last one just enough for me to slip in and deliver a final punch to its abdomen, cracking its shell and dropping it to the ground. It was only then I actually see all of the crossbow bolts Traavor had been firing into their backs! I could still see him at the edge of the circle ducking in his sand trench.
When the sand had settled, we realised everyone had run off when the 2x crab nightmares showed up. Probably a good thing. I left Ghesh arguing with Phil about being paid for fighting the mechanical crab while I went to go get Hoop back from Sinine. Phil wasn’t too happy Tugark obliterated it the way he did. For their Part, Hoop enjoyed having the chance to watch us. Seemed particularly impressed with Tugark…
Once everyone had calmed down and Phil finally conceded to pay, we all went back to enjoying the beach. Ghesh stripped one of the still intact arms from the mechanical crab and decided to keep it as a weapon, while Baine was busy cutting off one of the crab monsters claws, something about a gift for Varis. He went back to training Frankie for most of the day after that. Traavor wasted no time and was already going about setting a fire to make a BBQ of the crabs we killed (tasted surprisingly good!). Later on we went back to the bar and Tugark unloaded the rest of his earning for the day behind the bar.
That’s where things start to get hazy. I can only remember small flashes of the night after that.
Tugark was behind the bar for some reason….
Baine was swinging the crab claw around….
Ghesh wandered off with someone…. Sinine? No i don't think they were that tall...
Traavor was under a table…
Baine punched me I think? No…. PHIL punched me for suggesting we throw him…
pretty sure there was a brown haired girl with us for a while too…. Then we were on the boat? Baine was definitely crying something about losing Frankie over board again but still had him in his backpack…
I woke up this morning on the floor of the seashank, covered in hot sauce and glitter with one of the tiny mechanical crabs from the beach pinching my hand and a tiny umbrella stuck in my hair. No sign of anyone else from last night around… Hoop won't tell me the details but needless to say was very excited this morning about the whole affair and just keeps saying things like "I knew you had it in you" and winking at me….
