Drow-ning In Flavours
The Flourished Hook, Port Ffirst
By Jaezred Vandree
The finest food critic on Toril has arrived in Kantas.
Kantas, a newly discovered land full of adventure, opportunity, and most importantly, flavour. As a boy in the Underdark, I would never have dreamed that the surface world could possibly be so vast. After I had finished writing my best-selling book, 100 Greatest Recipes of the Sword Coast*, I foolishly thought that I have seen it all. But the goddess Lolth, in her infinite grace and wisdom, showed me the path to this exotic continent across the sea. She acted through my second cousin and former priestess of hers, the filthy apostate Asha, and her daughter, a half-human abomination named Igrainne, to help settle myself in Port Ffirst, where many ships from Faerun arrive every day bringing travellers who wish to experience the wonders of a brave new world. And here, in a lovely inn located in the heart of the town, is where my culinary journey shall begin.
The Flourished Hook prides itself as being the finest establishment in the two settlements of Port Ffirst and Daring Heights, and this pride shines through in its varied, exquisite menu. For my first night, I decided to go down a more traditional, rustic route. We began with an entrée of haddock chowder and bread. The soup is garnished with the right amount of mace and parsley and the haddock tastes pleasantly fresh, but its consistency is just a little too thick and gooey, and the rather soggy bread does not make this first dish the most enjoyable experience for the tongue and throat.
However, all was forgiven when the main course, spit-roasted pork basted in spiced wine, arrived. This hefty slab of rich, juicy meat simply explodes with flavour, as it was no doubt cooked for the perfect amount of time for the ground coriander, pepper, garlic, and high-quality wine to fuse into the flesh, which melts in the mouth. Stupendous.
Rating: 4/5

Finally, we close this meal with a classic dessert, the wardonys in syryp—locally growned pears boiled in cinnamon, sugar, ginger, and saffron sauce to wash down all the previous flavours with delightful sweetness. This drow shall sleep soundly with a happy stomach tonight, dreaming of the adventures to come.
