Alone, in her room at the Three Headed Ettin, Sheryl distractedly plucks a tune on her harp. Her thoughts keep dancing around what happened in that small hut where she and the others found the body of one of the treasonous three. What far off kingdom was it they were from again? Tethra? Tethyr? She couldn’t quite recall. She did the job as she said she would. She had helped the people find what they needed to further their investigation. A job well done...
But it was the battle that kept playing across her mind’s eye. It was how the others had looked at her afterwards.
“I thought you were just a bubbly, happy-go-lucky gal.” Was that the large, red dragonborn’s way of paying her a compliment?
“I think you and I need to have a drink when we get back,” Arkadius had said with a look of... was it scrutiny? Or was that a glint of admiration?
She had managed to avoid that conversation. After going to the investigator’s office to drop off the body, along with the heads of the ghouls and other bits they had found, she had snuck away. She liked Arkadius, even considered him a friend. But Sheryl did not want to have that sort of talk with someone who she barely knew. Besides, it’s not like the others weren’t violent too. Sure, she had danced a bit around the creatures... and maybe she had been a bit reckless with her spells during that fight... But there were so many ghouls, and they were hurting her companions. She had to do something!
Even if Arkadius got hurt in the process, it was worth it, she tried to convince herself.
Sheryl attempted to shake these thoughts from her head, as if she were shaking dew from her hair. Putting her harp off to the side, she got up and started pacing the room, humming to herself. Mind half composing a song, the other still lingering on those thoughts.
The fight with the ghouls had brought out that side of her. She had promised herself she would not be that way. She had left that world behind for a reason. She had needed to get away from what the Court had been slowly turning her into.
“My precious child, you may sing of love and light, but you are a daughter of Fae. There are equal parts lovely and wicked in you.”
Her pacing came to a slow stop. If that really was the case she would just have to try harder to be better. She had not been away long, but time had a way of slipping through her fingers if she wasn’t careful. A year and a day, that was how much time she was given.
It seemed like a long time when I had asked. But will it be enough for me to explore as I wish and bring back stories and songs worthy of Her?
Sheryl glanced down at her most prized possession, her harp. It was as much a part of her as the costumed wings she wore all the time. To all who have met her, these wings she wore seemed very real. That’s fae-craftsmanship for you! If the past few weeks in Daring Heights has taught her anything it’s that anything is possible in these lands.
With that, a new determination filled her. Sheryl proceeded to spend the rest of that night composing a ballad about a black and white Tabaxi named Cheats and the love he had for a girl named Felicia, who’s favourite gift she received from her love was a tawdry scimitar found in the magical hay bales outside her castle stables.
