An unusual entry in Igrainne's notebook, written in the Drowic dialect of Elvish:
A human mage, Mystigon, broke a pact with an archdevil. His only hope was the seraph who dwells in the Angelbark Woods.
When we found him, he was unresponsive. Mumbling incoherently to himself. Filthy. Long, unkempt hair and beard. Obviously had been that way for weeks. Before this, was behaving erratically. Stole a teacup pig from a pet shop, felt bad about it afterwards. He seemed like an eccentric person but this was still strange.
His mind was broken. What caused it?
"Madness occurs when the mind tries to comprehend the incomprehensible and fails."
Fiends are known to cause such effects to mortals who come in contact with them in some way. The Abyss and the Nine Hells are beyond understanding. Mother knows this only too well.
Or maybe he was afraid for his soul.
Fear. The most compelling emotion. What other feeling could put pressure on the mind like that? We fear what we do not understand.
I felt it when the Infernal Knight stalked us in the Angelbark Woods. We could not lose him no matter what we did. But he took his time. Advancing slowly, stopping when we stopped. But making sure we knew he was behind us, with the hoof-steps of his horse and the clanging of his armour. He was playing with us.
If it had gone on a little longer, I would have ended up like Mystigon.
I wonder if it was like that for Mother, too, when she was trapped in the Underdark during the Rage of Demons. But she would never tell me.
I also felt it when I saw her.
Ixcel.
Black hair, dark skin, yellowish eyes. Pretty. Powerful diviner. Has a pet snake. She joined us in the Cavernous Seashank, stayed the whole way, for some unknowable reason.
In the forest, I found her some peat moss to drink from. As she held the plant above her mouth, squeezing droplets out of it, I saw a forked tongue slither slightly past her lips and I felt cold. It was just like when I touched those stones by the waterfall.
I don’t know why she’s here. But I have a hunch.
I tried to crack jokes to distract myself and the others from the fear and confusion. I wonder if they noticed.
It doesn't matter. Because when the Infernal Knight finally stopped caught up to us, I was frozen in my place. Too scared to move. Deadweight to my team.
Mystigon was certain he would die. During a rare moment of lucidity, I sensed a grim acceptance within him. He even tried to save us by getting us away from him before the devil came. He knew as we did that we had no chance against him on our own. Thankfully, the angel in the woods chose to grace us with their presence in the darkest hour and stopped the worst from happening.
Mystigon lost his hand. But he will live. The seraph will take care of him. Milo and Jacinta seemed relieved.
He said he owes each of us a favour. Guess I'll ask him about the Underdark.
