Finally got a chance to get into these Games!
Baine's been mostly distracted with Frankie lately, but whenever he hasnt been playing with the puppy, he's been stressing about going to the FeyWild again. There has been a lot more word about them going on lately and I convinced baine to go with me today for the opening ceremony. We were sitting having a few drinks in the Seashank before leaving with Bogg and Urso who decided to come with, when we were approached by 2x people I've never seen before, both apparently been in Port Ffist for a while.
The first and most striking was Paw, a tall soft--spoken Tabaxi monk. I'd assumed she was from Za'Suul like the other Tabaxi's we met there but she is from a pretty far off place, I think she said was called Wa? Its was kind of hard to hear her in the Shank, whenever she spoke she would lean down to us and talk very gently. This gentle part of her is very different to what we saw later in the night though.... She is CRAZY fast and her claws are HUGE! Not someone I'd want to get on the wrong side of...Now I've sparred with her a little, I can definietly say I was right.
She walked in being touched repeatedly by a Halfling who was asking if she was sure it wouldn't work anymore (I never did find out what that was about?). Ser Geoffrey Wartortle was a character! Slightly small for a Halfling with Big sideburns, He carried a big shield with him with a symbol of an open door on it. Apparently it's representative of his god but I'm famiiar with the Halfling Deities to recognise it. He seemed alot like Gin but was just.... really nice about everything! He had apparently been off on an adventure with Urso before (Which is surprising on its own, given Urso's self-hatred for Halflings) and they were talking about someone called Pettunia. He came up to us giving a big ad loud greeting and genuinely seemed hapy with everything
All in all I liked these two, both seem to be really nice people. Paw is incredible patient and didnt seem bothered by Urso trying to climb all over her and for Urso to be happy to talk with Geoffrey must mean he's made some sort of positive impact on him.
Anyway, they came over to ask what we were talking about since they could hear Baine from across the room. They seemed a little confused about the Games, not helped by Baine describing it as "Fey Dickheads, being dicks to other Fey Dickheads who are being dicks". He hasnt really got over anything the Fey has done to him so far....
I gave a quick rundown of what the games were, enough to at least spark some interest. Paw mentioned being in the FeyWild before but got trapped there somehow for a while and wasnt too pleased with it. She had met Queen Sarastra though and seemed taken with her.... The REAL interest came when Baine mentioned Langston Farstep who turned us into kids before. Apparantly she has had run-ins with him as well. I think that was the main reason she came with us in the end, hoping to find him.
Between the 6 of us, we only knew of one way to the FeyWild, the tree we walked around when taking Rholor on his Pilgramage, (Speaking of which, Paw seems to know Rholor and lent some credit to the things we had heard about him). When we got to the tree, Baine had apparantly all but forgotton about Urso and just walked on through, leaving Urso behind! lucky bogg as about to come back for him! Once we all got through, we didnt really have a direction to go other than the arched trees we found before.... probably not our best start but at least we are on the right plane now. We went through the unusually heightened emotions shift as well... Baine sinking into his expected disdain for the Fey, so I had to calm him down again. Paw seemed very worried as we went through, I guess getting stuck before has left her cautious here.... For her part she went to meditate for a few minutes to recompose herself. Geoffrey on the other hand.... Geoffrey was having the time of his life! He was more excited than when Baine found Frankie!
So we were in the Fey but had no idea where to go now. Luckily we were actually helped out by these small metal creatures that came marching through the woods. They were small, round metallic creatures carrying small spears with one big eye in the middle of their.... face? I've never seen anything like it before.... they just came marching up to us, made these strange noises like they were communicating somehow, like a "beep" sound, then handed us a couple of flyers with details for the Games and where to find them! Then they just up and left, continuing their march through the woods.... Paw didnt seem too surprised by them though, she mentioned seeing something similar when in the FeyWild before. Apparently they were acting as a kind of referee to something? From what we saw later, this makes sense but for the time being we didnt have much other choice than to follow the flyer.
We started off through the woods towards where the flyer pointed us, losing track of time apparently, It didnt feel very long but it was suddenly night time. Thats would be the typical fey experience I guess. Nothing is quite what it seems. I did try to explain this to Paw back in the Seashank, she didnt seem to impressed with our 'lets go and see what happens' approach, but from my experience and listening to others, I don't think much else works very well here. Everything is too chaotic. Thanks to this, we ended up missing the opening ceremony though!
We arrived to an opening in the forest to see a lot of tents pitched around the place, the smell of food in the air and all kinds of people walking around. In the centre of the clearing with a huge Arena where the main events were clearly happening.... but as we walked in, we saw everyone leaving. The ceremony was over. I was pretty frustrated with this but looking back, we got the chance to actually play some games so it's not too bad. We started looking around and ended up going into a huge tent with a ? over the entrance. Some more of those small metal creatures where at the entrance ushering us in to what was like a huge party room! Games and stalls all over the place with a large dome in the middle.
Baine wanted to grab some food but as expected, Gold was worthless here, the guy on the stall wanting 1% of his hair for some food. Baine, not being good with numbers, got panicky about his braids being taken but Paw offered up her own. I mean, she is covered in fur so 1% for her made next to no difference in the end!
While we talked a bit and looked around, we noticed Bogg and Urso had disappeared. Not seeing them anywhere, we head for the dome in the middle and found them talking to another of those metallic creaturess, this one much bigger, looking like two metal boxes stcked on top of eachother, with a face on the top box looking forward at us, while it also had wings but also a small white wig? It had all these shiny stones around that it was using to talk by touching them, playing different words out loud as it did.... Quite an odd experience as it was. We got caught up on what was happening, this dome was the WildCard games, where we could earn points for our chosen Competitor in the games. we had to buy entry using "whatever we wanted" and had to secretly tell the creature who we were running for. For my part, I paid with the old shortsword I had. Urso handed over a bag of gold (I dont think he gets the concept of money very well), while evryoe else handed over a myriad of items.
The creature then told us the rules:
1. we were not allowed to hurt anyone
2. We were not allowed to reveal who we are playing for
Once we all agreed to play, he gave each of us a glove that grew to the size you needed it to be, a little like how Hoop opens up. Each of our gloves started to glow in different colours; mine and Bogg's were blue, Baine's was a deep red, Urso and Geoffrey had pink, while Paw's was yellow. The creature then opened a door revealing a portal for us to step through...
THE FIRST GAME
We all landed in a forest, split up from eachother in an area with these large cracks running through the ground. From seemingly everywhere, we could hear someone counting down from 5, signalling the start of the first game. We all landed on the ground and got up to see these small, glowing mushroom looking things coming out of the cracks in the ground. It took a while to work out what to do but basically we had to grab these mushrooms, bursting them and scoring points but depending on what colour we got, they released different effects... the white ones made my brain hurt, while the Green ones released some kind of toxic gas.The only other one I could see an effect for was the red ones, which seemed to blow up, sending you flying away.
Paw was closest to me at the start but VERY QUICKLY took to this game. She near enough just vanished with how quick she ran, covering the whole area on her own, popping so many of these mushrooms I couldn't keep count, even popping the ones other people where having trouble with. Aside from the speed, she seemed to just get engrossed in the hunt and looked like something primal stalking the forest.... thats when i realised how scary she could be!
Ser Geoffrey I dont think picked it up as quick as the rest of us. For the most part, he was walking up to the mushrooms and trying to introduce himself to them by shaking his their non-existant hands, loudly proclaiming his name... It was working for him eitherway as he managed to pop a few, but I'm not sure he was happy about popping them! I did hear him tell someone off for popping one he had called constance at one point.
Baine managed to cover a lot of ground, taking out a few of them as he went. He took to hitting things very quickly as expecetd but was torn the entire time wanting to comfort Urso, who was NOT having a good time here. Urso had started trying to make friends with the mushrooms, only to have Baine and Paw visciously mutilate his new friends before his eyes. He spent quite a lot of time crying very loudly on the floor...
Bogg seemed a little confused for a while but was otherwise managed to get a few in for himself. He was actually the first I saw pop a red mushroom and get blasted away by it.... maybe his small size didnt help matters much for him
For my part, I have no idea what happened....I went to the one closest to me and tried touching it but nothing happened, it just wobbled at me... I tried again a few times until finally it popped and released a green cloud that made it hard to breath! Seeing everyone getting ahead, I rushed to the next one as quick as I could but everytime I tried to touch one of these mushrooms I kept missing as it wobbled out the way or didnt seem to hit it hard enough to pop it.... In frustration I started yeling at them but the only thing that got me was Paw suggesting I have some green tea...
Needless, to Say, I didnt fair too well this game. Once it was over, another portal opened up and we headed through for the second game, one I was hoping I could redeem myself in.
I was wrong.
THE SECOND GAME
We came out fo the portal at the base of a steep hill, with a path winding up around it leading to the top. Paw, IMMEDIATELY scaled the walls, Urso close behind using that Spider climb thing again, while the rest of us started sprinting up, except for Geoffrey it seems. When I asked him later what he was doing, he said he was looking at the flowers around the area and taking in the view while we were doing what we were doing....
I managed to out pace Bogg and reach the top, to see Urso grabbing a huge plant with teeth, while Paw dashed for a pedestal in the centre of the clearing at the top.the edges of this plataeu was surrounded by 4 glowing pillars and the huge plants with teeth that tried lashing out at anything near them, Urso actually got caught by one and it did not look pleasant... Paw on the platform, that lit up yellow as she ran on, seemed to be waiting for someone to attack her.... I ran up to join her but as I stepped on the light started flickering. There was another loud BING as she stepped onto it so we guessed this is how we score points.
Bogg finally reached the top and shouted for me to shove Paw off the platform, which she took as a sign to try and shove me off, but i managed to avoid her grasp! Then another Bing ran out, meaning another Point for Paw!
Baine suddenly climed over the edge of the plataeu from one side, obviously fed up running.
Bogg ran up to the platform and tried pushing Paw. Thats when things started to get intense.... As Bogg touched Paw with the glowing glove, he just blasted her clear off the platform!
What ensueed was basically everyone trying to touch one another blasting them off the platform.I manageed to clear Baine off but got blasted off but Bogg sent me flying off, straight into one of the Pillars that held me in palce to it.Paw rushed back and blasted urso straight into bogg, sending them both flying, as Baine then sends her flying again. Geoffrey finally catches up and asks why everyone is on the floor as the melee continues.
Urso, obviously seething at Paw first killing his mushroom friends and now blasting him away, went into a rage and actually threw a firebolt a her but she dodged out of the way luckily. I finally manage to break free, get back to the platform only to see Baine send Paw flying again, directly into me and Bogg, sending us back to the same fucking pillar luckliy this time I managed to keep free. Bogg wasnt so lucky though and got stuck in place, spending most of the game after that swearing at Paw.
While Geoffrey tried to act as councillor to Baine and Paw, Urso in a fit ran straight for Paw but she dodged out of the way again. I ran up trying to send Urso flying off but tripped at the last minute and missed, AGAIN.
The game finished as I was confronted by Geffrey drawing his shield to protect Urso who was swearing at me and Paw. Bogg finally got free and started runnng for the pedestal andBaine tried lunging for Paw, who for her part, seemed to be havving a great time.
That game finished, most of us feeling a little beaten down, Baine worriedly checking on frankie, Urso and Bogg giving Paw evil looks. Another portal opened up and we went through, taking us back to the domed iside the tet where we started. I couldn't help but ask Paw how on Earth she was so quick and she said we should train together, which I was more than happy to do! Being blasted away, while frustrating, didn't actually hurt so in retrospect the whole game was quite fun. Except for Urso. He looks a little troubled after all this....
the weird metallic box creature greeted us as we returned and an illusory script appeared in front of it as it read out the results.
First place was Sarastra, Queen of night and Magic. Paw gave out a cheer, so she obviously championed her.
Second was Jack the Knave, Who I found out Geoffrey and urso was also running for.
Last was queen Titania, who I think Bogg ran for. I never did hear who Baine ran for... he was too distracted with Frankie.
Paw immediately started quizzing the creature about Langston but it looks like the only way we are going to find him is in the main event, maybe. With that, we were ushered out as a long queue of people had built up waiting to play behind us!
I'm not sure what Baine and the family got up to after the game. I think he was worried about Frankie being hurt so went looking for a babysitter. Paw didnt seem to understand the whole 'family' unit they have given the mix of races but said they all need to relax a little and suggested meditation. Apparently, I'm part of the family now too since i got included in that offer!
Hoop for thier part was tucked away most of the games, being blastedd around the place didnt seem like a safe option for a plate, but they had a blast anyway. I think they probably enjoyed seeing me get thrown around so much but they wont admit it! I never managed to get them a souvenir this time but I don't think that matters too much this time around, since they seemed to have fun still. I'm going to be sticking around for a few more of the games anyway so maybe we'll come acrooss some more souvenirs as we go.
All in all, I'm glad we went to the games as I had a blast (pun intended) taking part but I seem to fallen out of practice with my martial arts a bit. I took Paw up on the offer to train with her afterwards which helped to get me back on track. It felt refreshing to meditate again, taking a slower pace to everything but the sparring sessions we had was the best part of the time we spent together, especially since she uses a different style to myself. She didn't hold much back though, I regularly ended up on the losing end of our bouts and have lots of scratches from those insane claws of hers to prove it.... I think a few of them are going to scar. As much as Baine is going to be angry with me, my new robes took a beating too, so they are a bit torn up again. At least they aren't stained with that horrible milk now.
I had a lot of fun with Paw. She seems an honest and good person and the training was a lot of fun. When she mentioned she needed some help with something coming up, I was happy to offer my help, for what's it's worth anyway.
