"An Easy Escort, Terrible Flirting and a Fight with Spider-Man"
7th Entry in the journal of Markas Virnala
What a week! First the Fey Wild, now I find out there is a cave system leading to the Underdark near Daring Heights.
A few of us from Port Ffirst headed back up to Daring Heights for this 'Launch Party' we've seen posters for…. Not even a week and have another opportunity to wear the new clothes we got. Baine and Jacinta came along, as well as another Dragonborn, this time a black one called Ghesh.
Ghesh is quite imposing to see. He's clearly a fighter of some sort and has an array of weapons on his back… If I didn’t know any better, I would've guessed he had studied martial arts similar to what I did, but the way he carries is something more primal than that. Being a dragonborn, he has a similar breath ability that Horrus has, his however is acidic rather than lightning. The funny thing was, contrary to the tough look of him, he was always wearing a small leather Trilby hat.
This trip to Daring was pretty uneventful. We offered to provide safe passage to an old elven man we met as we left and he arranged a cart for us, so all in all it was an easier trip than expected. Eventually we got to the outskirts of Daring when he veered off to the side and circled around to the South East side of Daring where a small cluster of Buildings where grouped together. He pulled us up in front of a big square building with three domes on top, connecting via bridge to smaller building off to one side which had the main entrance, where we were greeted by a Halfling called Lacera, the Representative on hand for the trading company throwing the party. By now, I had brought hoop out to take in the party. This is definitely their kind of thing. Most people were a little surprised to see a talking plate but we're used to that response now.
Lacera introduced us to Heret, I think the person arranging the Party? There was an opening ceremony later in the night where they cut a ribbon and explained they are setting up a trade route with another country, Amn, the one Heret comes from. I didn’t quite understand the complexity of everything but then I guess I'm not a merchant. More trade to Kantas can't be a bad thing though I guess.
Heret is a young man with short black hair and a neat beard…. I've seen so many people with Beards lately, maybe I should start to grow one? Shame I never tried before my hair turned Grey. Anyway, he was wearing bright loose clothes that looked really expensive, and a big chunky necklace with a gem on it. He definitely reminds me of some of the traders I used to see back on the Swordcoast. He carried a Sabre with him that looked just as extravagant with a shiny pearl on it. Heret was actually very helpful for us while we were here. He disappeared off a few times, doing the rounds with other guests but he came over to offer us advice dealing with some of the traders later on. He's obviously an adventurer of some sort as well, probably working two gigs like Milo is. Baine seemed to recognise him from something to do with a dragon statue at some point but he got involved with the rest of us in the cave at the end of the night.
That's getting ahead I guess…
The party was decked out in a similar fashion to how Heret was dressed. Lots of bright colours and everything looked expensive. There was quite a mix of people around and instead of servers, they had floating plates of food and drink roaming around the place!
Once we were in, Heret introduced us to Pieni, another bird folk with bright blue feathers.
Pieni was VERY interesting. Seemed a little quiet or nervous at first, sticking close to Heret who they obviously knew already. I've met a fair few bird folk but now but never one so colourful as Pieni. Most the people I meet now are adventurer's and its usually in the middle of a fight I start to see how… accomplished they are? Even Heret seemed like a gentle person when we first met but can handle himself in a fight well. Pieni though… I actually have no idea with Pieni… Mainly because I didn’t SEE them fight themselves… that being said, I'm not sure I would want to get on their bad side…
Then we met the last person to join our little gang for the night. Or I thought so at least.
He introduced himself as Kirhan Darkfinger and what we saw was a tall (for what it's worth), elderly looking dwarf. Well dressed with holy amulets and a necklace showing 'The pantheon of the gods' on, but with stained black fingers. He was talking to a well-dressed human man who held himself like he was someone important… as we walked over, we heard them talking about the dwarf bringing a printing press to Kantas so he could start up a periodical with a Gnome he is working with. The smart looking guy looked impressed anyway as they parted and bumped into us.
After the usual Greetings, the man Kirhan was talking too seemed as surprised by Hoop as everyone else but actually asked me about them rather than just wanting to immediately buy them from me. We gave a quick rundown of how we ended up travelling together and he asked if we would go to see him in a few days to discuss Hoop at the councils offices (He works for the council in Daring heights). Hoop seemed to think he seemed nice enough so we agreed to swing by at some point. I'm dubious about what he wants though. Most people just want to buy Hoop but maybe he might tell us something interesting?
He headed off into the party anyway and we were allowed to mingle with the other party guests for a little bit before the main ceremony started. Bain pointed out a stern looking man to Heret, who explained it was Varis, commander of some group of mercenaries I think. He and Ghesh ended up going over to him for a chat, I'm assuming about food and fighting, mainly due to the fact as I glanced over to saw Baine miming like he is eating to Varis and generally having that excited look he gets when he knows he gets to hit something.
Heret was almost immediately approached by party guests who wanted to talk so most of us split up for a bit after that. I saw Jess head over to a group of people in the corner while I went to speak to the group of people in stage clothes. They seemed nice, they have come from Amn as well. The woman I was speaking to was pretty nice. And Pretty. I felt a little awkward talking to her but it was fun. She seemed a little giggly for a bit. It wasn’t until I was talking to hoop later that they pointed out how awkward I was. While we were talking, they were stretching, getting ready to dance when she stretched her leg right up to her head (she was so flexible!), I was pretty obvious that I was impressed. I didn't really remember doing it but Hoop was having fun copying me afterwards: "DAAYYUMM". I didn’t really help much either by asking her if 'they were the entertainment for the night'. Apparently that can be taken in a VERY different way than I meant... At least she didn’t seem upset with me so I guess she knew what I meant. I was hoping to catch up with her again after the party but by the time we got back everything had finished.
Lacera came through and announced the ceremony was about to begin so Heret gathered us together and gave us a very quick tour on the way through to the larger building. In the middle of the floor, close to the end we walked in from was a large circle drawn in chalk with ornate looking runes spread around it. In the centre was an old man in robes we had soon around the party, I think his name was Graven? He was standing in front of 2 posts with a ribbon tied between them. Lacera waved us down so we joined the crowd gathering around the ring as the old man started to talk.
He gave a speech about this special evening and launching a trade agreement between Daring Heights and Amn, hoping for a "fruitful relationship". It sounds like it's been a long time in the works and everyone seems excited about a new trade link. I was interested to see what they were bringing but I didn’t realise they celebrated new trade like this. I always thought they'd just sail here and setup a small start-up like the stools around the docks in Port Ffirst. I guess not though, especially for what already looks like an established trading company. It was cool to see. I don't imagine I'd take up work as a trader or merchant anytime soon but I guess its interesting to see some of the background into it. I suppose if I do want to try it out, I might be able to speak with Heret about it too, he seems pretty good at it.
The ceremony finished and the ribbon cut, the old man began casting a spell that opened the portal, out of which some people started walking, carrying all sorts of goods and packages. All of them dressed in nice clothes with all these gems and rings on them. While they set up, we were ushered back into the smaller building to watch the show they had prepared. The dancers I spoke to earlier were now on stage, performing an exotic kind of dance. It was fun to watch but I was too busy watching the dancer who I was talking to earlier to notice much else going on. It didn’t take long before the show was over and we were shown to the trading stalls that were up now.
There was all sorts of stuff around. Rolls of exotic fabrics, books, jewellery. Kirhan went to check out the book stand but the rest of us headed straight for the table with all the weird looking things on. Bain and Ghesh started asking about some pieces of armour that would make them look more intimidating when we received our first shock. The prices here were SO EXPENSIVE! The only one who could afford anything was Pieni who seems to have an inordinate amount of money somehow?
After some floundering, Heret explained that these traders liked to barter more than we may be used to, treating it almost like a sport. It took a little more education from Heret about how it works but Bain and Ghesh started a bidding war with the guy eventually managing to get a lower cost and got themselves some stuff. He showed us a spinning top with a small mini figure of a Griffon inside it. He told us he made it for his son but warned us to be careful as it was magical and when spun, the Griffon would be released! Since I couldn’t afford it Pieni wasted no time and bought it too! I didn’t mind that too much, I couldn't afford it after all, but who on Earth makes a toy like this for a child!? And how has the kid not released it yet!?
Scary parenting practices aside, we seemed to be holding up a bit of a queue so we moved on to mooch around a little more, that is until Heret was approached by someone, looking panicked. They were bringing another of the honoured guests the party but was late and had some bad news: He lost the guest. Heret started requesting guards to go out and look when Lacera took him aside and said something, pointing over to us. It wasn’t hard to work out what she was suggesting…. We were adventurer's so this is the kind of thing we should be handling. We wasn’t doing too well in the trading anyway so I guess this was more our speed.
We got a run-down of what happened and set out to find the missing guest. The guy driving the cart was taking her around the North side of Daring to get a view into a chasm up there (that was a revelation for me. I've been to Daring a few times but never ventured out that way.) Something happened and the cart tipped into the chasm. He managed to jump out but hit is head and passed out for a time. When he woke, he could see the cart but not the guest. Heret wasted no time in heading off so we had to catch up with him.
The chasm to the North of Daring is Huge. It's obviously been there a while too, the people in the area have setup a lift system to get in and out of it. We had a quick look around and there was a few signs of blood about as well as track marks in the chasm leading into a cave, looking like something was dragged into. Apparently these caves eventually lead down into the Underdark which has some weird stuff going on from what I've heard. This situation was a little weird already but I was told we shouldn’t be going too far in to worry about the Underdark ideally. Honestly, I wouldn't mind going in to explore, just felt like we were rushing into something maybe we shouldn’t but there was still a missing person we needed to find so in we went.
And now, NOW, we actually meet the last person of our group. Kirhan, the Dwarf who was with us, suddenly runs off into the cave where it gets real dark really quick. I didn’t want him to go in alone so I followed him in, being able to see in the dark and all. What he was actually doing was changing shape, into what I hope is his real body otherwise this could get very confusing… Crowe Rustle, as he now introduced himself, is a shape shifting Kenku by the looks of things. He had a hood up covering his face as much as it could. I've seen a few Kenku before but this one just had no feathers at all! Kind of unsettling to see to be honest….
The tunnel started off pretty narrow, enough room for 2 of us to go through at a time. Crowe and me went off ahead, as the lighter footed of the group while the others followed behind. Heret seemed to have brought a lantern so people can see. While Baine and Ghesh took up the rear, being the loud and clangy people of our troupe. The tunnels seemed to stretch on quite a long way, winding back and forth, twisting here and there but for the most part seemed to be easy to follow at least and we could still make out the tracks we were following. The only thing that was annoying me was I kept getting bits of dust in my eyes! Crowe and I eventually reached a point where the cave seemed to open up a bit so we waited for the rest to catch up. The tracks seemed to just stop here as well so we wasn’t sure which way to go anyway. Once they caught up, however, Pieni spots something on the ceiling. We all look up to see a vaguely humanoid shape wrapped in something stuck to the ceiling, but what was more pressing was the large spider like creature that was directly above us!
We scattered around from under it immediately. Heret, Bain and Ghesh taking up positions to stab it if it drops down, while Crowe and me split up and head for opposite sides of the tunnel. I tried to climb up to reach either the spider or the figure but fell off again pretty quick where I was rushing. Meanwhile, Ghesh sprays the spider with acid from his mouth, causing it to drop down to the floor and an onslaught from those under it. Crowe started firing arrows out from the shadows where he had disappeared (First he changes shape, then vanishes like that…. I'm a little worried where else he's been and maybe I've not noticed?). This huge spider turned round to reveal it was actually half human/half spider (I later found out it's called a Drider and comes from the Underdark. Apparently we were not as far as we thought!)
The Drider was quick. Very quick! In the time it took us to organise our attacks against it, it managed to savagely bite into Ghesh before scurrying around the group, dodging a few swipes from them as it went. Jess fell back and joined Crowe in firing arrows at the creature. Pieni up and ran away from it, pretty fast. At first I thought they were running in a panic. What Pieni actually did was make space for some Quicklings they summoned somehow!
The Drider looked pretty intense but I didn’t actually get much opportunity to face it. Almost as soon as we started fighting, I spotted a huge spider come crawling out side tunnel behind me I was busy with that. As I glanced around, I saw Crowe had been pushed out of his hiding spot by a similar Spider and the group in the centre were making short work of the Drider, especially the Quicklings! They are terrifying to watch…
It wasn’t long before Baine finally dropped then Drider, then rushed over to finish off the Spider I was dealing with. With only one left, I rushed over to help Crowe finish off that one. And we were left alone in the cave again. Pieni managed to fly up and retrieve the woman who was tied up. She was the missing guest and luckily we found her in time before she became spider food. She was a bit shook up but she was ok.
We headed back out and up out the chasm, making our way back to the warehouse where the party had now finished and was packing down. Lacera paid us for helping the guest and Heret even offered us a reward from his own funds. He's a good guy. There was no sign of the dancer I was talking to earlier either so with that we headed off back to Port Ffirst. It's a shame I couldn’t find anything to buy while I was there but I guess I'll see the new stock coming in around the place soon enough.
Hoop seemed to enjoy the party but then I knew they would. It was easier here than the last one we went to but maybe I'm just getting used to mingling like this. I'm going to go see that Councilman soon, see what he was so interested in Hoop for. Otherwise I think I'll look for a new book soon, I'm running out of space in this one...
