"Dear Thea,
Hope you are well. I miss you. I miss the village. I hope everything's alright back home.
I'm still in Kantas. Still adventuring.
We went to a place called the feywild recently. I didn't like it very much."
Baine stops and sighs heavily. He scratches the top of his head and takes another big gulp from his ale.
This is his third attempt and it's taken him the better part of the evening to do.
"I've been in the feywild before but this time it was. Well, bad.
This pretty elf lady came and hired us for a job. As usual. That's what we do around here to make a living - someone asks you to do something, you don't really get to ask question back at them and you do as you're told.
She offered us a lot of money. I guess that should have been a clue - people with a lot of money tend to not be very nice. You know that as well as I do.
The thing about these fey people is that they are magical and kinda different from us NOT from the feywild. They play these games but they aren't like our games, and they play tricks on each other that aren't really tricks, they're just mean. Sometimes they play tricks on people outside the feywild to like, impress someone IN the feywild. I think. I'm not sure I've understood exactly what was going on.
Anyway, we went. Got tasked with stealing gems from some people and put them in a different place, for no apparent reason. (See? Makes no sense.)
We nicked the gems from some more of these quickling guys and there was a fight. Normally I'm all down for a fight, you know that, and these little quicklings stabbed the fuck out of me so they had it coming, but there was a dryad lady who was crying and asking us why we were stealing the gems.
In the end I tied her up and left her alive when we left but we heard her scream and a little while later we found out someone had killed her. We don't know who or why but I can't help but feel like it was out fault, you know? I don't want to fight people who don't want to fight me, or at least have it coming you know? It didn't make me feel good."
Baine sighs again, rubs his face with his hands and crosses out the last paragraph. Thea doesn't need to know that. She'll just worry about him.
"We put the gems in this pond like the elf lady asked and went back home. Got paid. Got drunk.
It was a strange job and it didn't make sense at all. And we got paid like 400 gold for it, so someone clearly needed it done. I can pay for my new breastplate with that gold, so that's good.Easy money right? Remember what my dad used to say? I'm something sounds too good to be true, it probably is?
Do me a favor yeah, if for some reasons someone asks you to go to the feywild, just don't. Stay out of it. I know I will.
I'll write you again soon.
All the best,
Baine"
He folds up the letter and puts it on the table in front of him. He'll send it in the morning, probably. First he's going to get good and drunk.
