Daisy walks into Taffeta's house, leaning on her staff in exhaustion or despair or both. She's just come back from the Plane of Chaos.
'Taffeta, I need to talk to you' - she says, her eyes tearing up.
'Oh, goodness, of course! Come in, sit down.' Taffeta scoops some of Idari's discarded clothes from a chair near the hearth and dumps them on top of a chest in the corner. 'Let me make you some tea. Or... something stronger?'
'Tea would be good, yes..'
Daisy settles on a chair still leaning on her staff, accepting a cup from her friend.
'Taffeta, did I ever tell you how I learned.. you know.. this?'
She hits her staff against the floor and it becomes covered with blossoming flowers and green leaves.
'I know you left home to learn more about that kind of thing,' Taffeta replies, sitting down on a nearby stool, 'but I don't think you ever said how...'
'Yes I left home to learn more about this magic, but really I wanted to find someone.
It all started when I was a child. I don't know if it was real or not, maybe just a vision - a giant eagle appeared to me, beautiful, dark red, it's wings completely white. It had led me into a cave in the middle of the forest near where we lived, the cave with ancient carvings inside. I kept coming there trying to understand them for years when I suddenly realized I could communicate with forest in the way nobody else I knew could. Birds talked to me, trees talked to me in their own way. My parents were not happy about it at all, they wanted me to be a jeweller like them. Now my sister Dazneth is under even more pressure about that, poor her..
Especially my mother was devastated. She told me that my great grandma Khazifa had the same 'disease'. Abandoned her people to live with some bird people.. Mother thought this would discourage me but all I wanted is to do is to find her. I think it was her, many years ago, who appeared to me as an Giant eagle and showed me the way to that cave. Why did she choose me? After so many generations. I need to know..'
Taffeta sits forward. 'That eagle... isn't that the one we saw at... at the circus?'
'Yes.. Although I think that one was an illusion. It was very strange because it seemed like my mother was an eagle. It did make me go home and check on them for a while.. They are okay, just wouldn't stop trying to convince me go back. Strange how that terrible day caused something good like a family visit at the end, isn't it..
I did find the village of aarakocras not to far from here, where Khazifa stayed for a while but it was many years ago. And now, after today, I finally know where she went after.'
'Oh yes! I remember we met that aarakocra near Castle Dawnsend who turned out to be a relative of yours! But what is it you've found out now?'
'Yes, Yaki. They are very nice, and all of the aarakocras from their village, really. I think that blue feathered fellow Pieni is from there too, he's too young to have met my grandma though.
You know the Duchess? Not the vampire. I know, it's alarming. The Duchess that hosted a Grand Ball recently?
Well, I saw a painting in her house, which had the exact same eagle on it as my grandma. It looked like it was flying in a field of some metal constructions and things called cogs. It's a new word I learned. The Duchess said the painter of that canvas lives in the New Elysium. So I went there with the group of people - Darius, Paw, Tugark, Demik and Grimes.
Did you hear about Grimes' report? Oh.. I guess you don't really talk after Nowhere's trial. Do you?'
The halfling stares at her cup of tea a while. 'Not really. I'd say hello if he passed in the street, not that that happens often. But I'd sooner trust a bow made of fir wood than put any store in any official report of his.'
'I understand.. Sometimes his reports are accurate though, like the one from New Elysium. That was a very disturbing place, I am glad our visit wasn't long. I found that painter who made a painting of Khazifa, Ola Pernor is her name. She was actually very nice, she told me I have my grandma's eyes.. Very talented painter too. We saw two more of her paintings, one had a bird in an open cage with a cat waiting outside and one had a bear with an eagle on it's shoulder in the middle of a forest fire. Very unsettling but so realistic.. Tugark had a lot of appreciation for the art, did you know he iis what you could call an expert about this sort of thing? He never stops surprising me.
But it turns out that painter Ola knew my grandma. She told me how that Khazifa, helself and that crazy man Randall Salt were good friends before he started his unnatural expriments. She lived there, can you imagine? In the New Elysium! They had a very serious fight with Randall apparently so Khazifa left.
I thought it was another dead end but then just before we were leaving, Ola grabbed my arm and whispered that my grandma is trapped in a prison in a Plane of Mechanus! She's in prison!' - Daisy's eyes start tearing up again.
'I have to save her, Taffeta.'
'Of course!' Taffeta reaches out and squeezes Daisy's hand. 'But... how does this painter know all of this? Can you trust her?'
Daisy nods.
'You know I can tell when someone's not being truthful.. Also the eldest in the aarakocra village told me my grandma once reached out to him to say she was in trouble. I don't think it's a coincidence.
That's not all. When I came back to my room just before I came here, there was someone waiting for me there. A strange metallic person who introduced themselves as Jack, they said they're from Mechanus and offered to help for a favor. I'm so overwhelmed, I don't even know how everyone just knows me. I know it's probably because I'm an ambassador to the Bear King, but still, it's all so strange.. '
Daisy reaches into her obscidian black bag and takes out a pile of papers, which have very neat and complicated schemes drawn on them and continues:
'Anyway, this Jack gave me these maps and I think I can use them to find the prison where she's kept. I will ask Oriloki to help assess them I think. I'm sorry to barge in like this.'
'Please, Daisy, don't be sorry. I'm glad you came. But did you say someone was waiting inside your room? That's terrible, how did they get in?'
'I don't know, but that was just an illusion as well. They disappeared after telling me where to find the maps. At this point I just want to free my grandma.. Do you think you would be able to come? I'm not sure , it might be quite dangerous.'
'Of course I'll come with you,' says Taffeta. She gives the druid's hand another squeeze.
'Why don't you stay here tonight? I don't like this "Jack" getting into your room, even if it was only an illusion. Nerry and the girls will be back soon, they'd all love to see you. When you're rested... Mechanus.'
She doesn't ask how they're to get to that plane. She isn't sure she wants to know the answer. Because the only way she knows to get there is the Angelbark Portal, which needs a key. And she knows that key is... or was... Nowhere. And if she thinks about that... So she doesn't. Because Daisy needs to go to Mechanus, and Taffeta will go with her, and that's all there is to it.
