This is it I am out in the world.
After receiving the messenger from Upper Bloody Creek we decided to make our way North to investigate the reports of the dead retiring to life. Let's just say it didn't take long. Our first encounter was with a gentleman named Radley who was eager to draw our attention to the creatures currently engaged in attempting to break down the doors of a small grove. Our archer managed to scout ahead and saw the elderly Father Jonathan attempting to hold the creatures at bay outside the grove. Once I was close enough to see clearly it became apparent that we were facing 3 Orc's and an Ogre or the undead variety. I managed to get them with a sneak attack and the party reined down on them until nothing was left but charred bones and stinking rotten flesh. Actually at one point I incinerated one of the Orc's which rolled down the hill towards me which I nimbly jumped over, not to brag or anything.
Once the creatures were dispatched we found out from Father Jonathan that the dead had been returning since a week ago. It seems that ten long dead villagers had returned from the Angelbark Woods and resumed their daily routines. On inspection of the corpses we found no Obsidian and no marks that would indicate a ritual. Father Jonathan did offer one more interesting piece of information, it seems that 3 children from the village had gone missing for three days starting on the spring equinox. The children had returned telling tales of a unicorn who had protected them in the words.
We decided to investigate the claims of the sighting as it seemed to be the most arcane thing to have happened in recent times. Our investigation was a mixed bag of success the first kids said they had been taken by the creature and it had been kind to them. It was then that we encountered our first of the undead villagers. We spent the day searching about town trying to locate the source of the undead, we were unable to talk with the second child and received a very frosty reception at the last. However once we had slain the undead father we found something a little more interesting.
He wore a ring with an inscription in Infernal around the interior, luckily a member of the party was able to translate the inscription which read 'Though I chose death therefore I am the winner'. This caused us to return to the family home and after egressing the mother in infernal she proved to be intact a ghoul. We were quick to dispatch her and search the house where upon we found an unholy alter and a book covered in skin that seemed to refer to necromancy.
We took our findings and the Ghouls head to Father Jonathan who was satisfied that we had found the source of the unrest however unnerved by what we had found. It was at this point the Ghoul's head reanimated and spoke with us, the conversation went as follows:
Who made you?
Myrkul himself
How many of you are there?
Dozens maybe hundreds
Where is the Crown of Myrkul?
In Darkfort, within the heart of the Obsidian Obelisk
The days of the guardian of the forrest are numbered he will join my master.
Obviously this raises a number of questions and I am keen to research Myrkul when I return to Darring Heights. I am also keen to find someone who can deal with this book and ring as soon as possible, I am very uncomfortable having it on my person. We plan to return to the forrest soon to see if we are able to find this Unicorn and in the meantime I hope to find a Diamond for 50gp to add to my spell casting.
Leaving the village was a good idea, I am certain, there is so much more here than I ever knew.
