Written in code in a journal hidden under a floorboard along with a locked box containing notes on the kantas expanse, some letters written in thieves cant, a bloodstained necklace and a portrait of a young woman
Approached in the Three Headed Etin by halfling named Balwyn Hassletap (well dressed, lots of jewelry) who had come into possession of a treasure map and wanted an escort and assistance retrieving the treasure. He didn’t seem to eager to do much of the retrieving himself which would make it much easier to skim a little for myself. If people want to keep their treasure they should keep a much closer eye on it.
A small party of us gathered: Fudo the monk (seemed very morbid, maybe a little too eager to kill things, use caution), Gara the dwarven wizard -(lent him 15GP for armour with interest collect 25GP back), Mania the druid - (has an interesting side business), and Dorian a tiefling warlock I had previously met on an expedition into the forest (outgoing, well dressed, sets a lot of things on fire).
We walked South West through the forest for several hours until we came across a cliff overlooking a lake and, walking along a path down the cliff, the entrance to a cave.
Walking through the darkness of the cave two of our party were ambushed by some small unidentified creatures and had the husk of a spider filled with some kind of noxious substance dropped in their faces. The rest of the party stayed back listening to the coughing waiting to see if it was fatal.
Continuing along we came to an obvious trap and a spike lined pit. Jumping the pit I finally came face to face with the little trickster creatures which Mania identified as germalines. After dispatching two of their number the rest seemed content to leave us alone as we continued.
Travelled on we came to a 20ft chasm. Using the pitons in my pack to climb along the walls and secure a rope for the others we moved on until we came to a drop. Dorian climbed down first but was stopped by the appearance of two rust monsters. I attempted to distract one by throwing a lantern while Fudo dropped to the floor to fight them hand to hand. The rest of our party threw ranged attacks lighting the monsters on fire while the Fudo, nearly dying in the process, finished them both off with a punch.
As we recovered from the fight we examined the door we had come to. Dorian shouted the answer to the riddle written over the door almost before the rest of us had finished reading it and we moved on to a complicated game involving trapped floor tiles.
Progressing we came across twenty stairs with the words “it seems every 2nd or 3rd time I step away fate is there without a doubt to trap my course”. Gara tested the stairs by throwing an iron pot onto them and watching as it was engulfed in flame when it hit the 12th step. After a brief debate the party decided to keep throwing items and lengths of rope on the steps until we knew which ones were safe. As we finished ascending the steps we were all suddenly struck with the knowledge that if we had just looked at every third word we would have known that “...every...3rd...step...is...a...trap”.
We passed through another chamber, working out the password to progress with magical weapons hung on the wall (took them for later - get them valued), into a larger much more ornate chamber. There were four pillars with wooden skeletons on top and a large mirror directly opposite us. As we looked around the room on the ceiling we saw another riddle. As soon as we solved it the skeletons came to life only to be quickly vanquished by the party.
Finally in the mirror we saw the treasure. As we all leapt through to scoop up as much as we could the money started to move and formed into the head of a dragon. We were quick to attack, and attempt to scoop up as much money as possible while we did so. I was a little worried that some of the parties magical attacks would damage the treasure but we seemed to manage to kill it with all of the gold intact.
Totals after slightly under-exaggerating how much we found to Balwyn -
