Eventually Coll couldn't help but ask, as he served the stout, red-bearded dwarf perched at the end of the bar yet another pint.
"Not that I'm complaining, keeps the coin rolling in, but you're hitting it pretty hard this evening. Something up?"
"Honestly," the dwarf attempted to stare at Coll, but the lack of focus in his eyes prevented the desired effect, "I'm just glad to be back somewhere with good beer." He waved his tankard at Coll. "This is good!"
"I'm glad you like it. Where have you been then, that has such bad beer?"
"You ever been to Port Ffirst?"
"Ah. I'm guessing you ended up in the Seashank? Yeah, they're not up to much."
The dwarf threw his head back to laugh, nearly toppling himself off the stool. "That's an understatement. Surprisingly good chicken though." Before Coll could retort that they must have improved the recipe since he was last there, the dwarf burst out "I'm here to help people right? To protect people. But some people just won't be helped! What do you do about that eh? This group, right, that I got hired with to track down a vigilante type," he waved his hand vaguely, "all mad. Obsessed with picking fights, with others, with each other. I'm surprised we got anywhere near Laeruna, let alone find them."
Coll almost managed to ask who Laeruna was, who hired them, who the group were, anything, but again the dwarf interrupted with his own thoughts. "These two warlocks in our group, Mystigen and Serpentine, kept taking pops at each other, before we even got properly hired by Arnis."
"Arnis?" Coll managed to get out.
"Bigwig tiefling in Port Ffirst, wanted a bigger slice of the pie. Mm, do you have any pie?" Coll shook his head. "Sorry."
"Well nevermind. Anyway, she wanted us to find this Laeruna the Red who'd been helping people break out of their contracts with the LeNoir brothers, to have a chat with her. You've heard of them I take it? Anyway, some of the others started chatting up one of the guys who had been helped, but there was enough of them, so I started talking to this young chap there. Now I'm not much of an investigator, I never claimed to be. Wrong sort of job for me really, but I just wanted something to do, you know... What was I saying?"
"You were talking to a young.." "Young guy in the tavern, yes, yes. Well, so, I just straight up asked if he knew anything about Laeruna, no point beating about the bush, and he choked on his pint! Still, he was a good kid, even I didn't learn too much from him. But like I said, not much of an investigator.
Anyway, we split up, some went to visit a townsguard who had been injured, which got her out of her contract, while me, a half orc called Bain and the warlock Mystigen, went to a ship repairman whose workshop had been ransacked. Mostly I just felt sorry for him, be hadn't wanted to his contract broken, he just wanted to work! I fixed what I could with a few Mending spells, but I couldn't replace what was stolen. Perhaps one day..."
The dwarf seemed lost in thought for a moment before continuing. "Anyway, all we found out is that Laeruna can probably use magic, as no-one in the neighborhood heard a whole workshop being destroyed! The other group had much better luck - turns out the townsguard had made an actual deal with Laeruna and knew exactly where they could be found. So we found them! Not that I can tell you where of course, we did promise," he said, wagging his finger. "So they agreed to meet with Arnis, and best of luck to the both of them. But right then my group decided it just hadn't had enough fighting and asked Laeruna and her gang for a punch up! Out of absolutely nowhere! Some people I don't think I'll ever understand. Picking fights for the sake of it, I don't know...
So now I'm going to spend the evening drinking, and in the morning try to find some people to help who actually want helping." He drained the dregs at the bottom of the tankard. "One more please."
Coll smiled. "I think this time you're the one who needs help. Go home, sleep it off. There'll always be more people who need protecting. This is Kantas!"
At first Milo looked annoyed, then returned the smile. "You're not wrong." Heaving himself off his stool with a "Goodnight!" he wandered off into the dark.
