cc: Aurelia and the council of Daring; delivered with urgency by Ibis to said members of council.
Greetings, Mageister Yndoumil Atalantier.
I hope this brief epistle finds you in studious health and productive pursuit.
My apologies in advance for being unable to attend this quarter's strategy planning session in person. Daring has recently fallen into the grips of a pestilent epidemic: the cause and cure for which, at time of writing, are currently unknown. The city is under lockdown and martial law: all egress - magical or otherwise - from the city has been curtailed as much of the town has been stricken by what is being termed "The Lassitude".
Apparently, "The Lassitude" is a contagion that has appeared on the continent of Kantas before; previously, however, it occurred in the northern city of Kundar and did not present as virulently as this strain. The main symptomatic differences this time seem to be: a) those cured (by healing magic or other means) receive only a temporary respite and are not immune to re-catching this disease, and b) the sickness is a much more violent, fatal strain.
I have, for now, acquiesced to their requests to remain within city limits - though I have firmly but politely reminded Mistress Aurelia and the other members of the council that I am, in fact, not actually a citizen of Daring and have diplomatic status. Out of respect to the city and the trust we are attempting to build, I have made them aware that I am capable of leaving the city through my own magical means should I so choose, but will not do so while this crisis is on-going. Unless, of course, the threat to my life and mission becomes untenable. I have also offered my assistance and abilities in the fight against this outbreak, but as of yet have not been called on for help.
Rest assured, I remain uninfected - potentially due to a combination of my clerical training and the air-tight Sanctum I am able to conjure as a place of temporary residence. I have also taken under my protection the members of the Thistletop family that were currently in Daring at the commencement of the outbreak. This is the family of which Idari is a member; a young Halfling girl I have written to you about before...
While not officially co-opted into the emergency health response being co-ordinated across the city, I have nonetheless been able to uncover some curious activity. I am currently, invisible and unobserved, trailing a group of low-level doctors and medics as they gather reports and evidence about the cure. They also seem to have called in on Master Rholor and left rather hurriedly carrying a jar of unknown contents. I did not intervene as they seemed to be on official business and my primary role here is as an observer. I fear I must step in soon, however, as it was revealed that one of the party was in fact a Fey creature in disguise and it and its fellows arrived in Daring pretending to be Priests of Helm in an effort to propagate the effects of the plague.
Indeeed, even as I pen this, an explosion seems to have occurred in the vicinity of the Temple of Waukeen, where the cure was being manufactured. I shall sign off now and contact other residents and colleagues in Daring to attempt to uncover more behind this sinister duplicity. The redoubtable Sergeant Grimes is already aware of these events and on the case, so no doubt my involvement will not be required, but I shall endeavour to assist in any way possible. I will update with more information anon.
May your knowledge ever grow towards the light.
