Written following the mad rave of a session that was Riverside with the wonderfully charming and inquisitive Fernleaf
"Well thats Keros out for the count." Mittens said, closing the door to the minotaur's room in the Three headed Dragon.
With a big purring groan as he stretches and rolls his shoulders, still a little achey from supporting his friend back in his sloshed state.
"Thanks for the help with'im Fern," He says to the lizardfolk on the landing across from him, "not sure if I couldn't managed alone."
"Does this happen often? These fey parties?"
"Honestly this is only the second one I've been too," Mittens states as they head down the stairs of the inn.
"The last one-which wasn't too long ago actually- was after we all fought off the Somethings which were causing a lotta trouble around the Feywild and The Material Plains so their recaptures were delayed a cause for celebration. Truth be told I just think Feywildians just like any excuse they can find to throw a good party.
What did ya think of it?"
"It was really loud and colorful. There was an awful lot of drinking. I don't think I'd consider it fun, but the Feywildians did seem to be having a good time. What did you think of it?"
"Yeah it was alright I suppose", said Mittens, running both hands through his hair with a puff of Prestidigitation to finish off last of the drying from his Mitten's Mitt diving experience. "The music and dancing by Raine and that Chartreuse was pretty good, and the drinking kinda reminded me of me Pa and his friends having fun together after celebrating finishing a big harvest back on the farm. Not that I joined of course, but it was a good atmosphere."
He smiled, "I guess it's like people say though, you gotta find ya scene and sometimes a totally out their damp party thrown by a King of a Feywild court isn't it.
"I don't think parties will ever be my scene, especially ones lots of people I don't know. I've tried a bit of mage hand, but you used a different hand for the ride, and it worked really well!"
“Ah that’s fair, but sometimes ya just gotta be there like with this adventuring lark, ya don’t who you’re gonna meet unless you’re there.” Mittens bashfully waved Fern’s compliment away as they made their way outside the tavern for a walk, both thankful to have a breather from another alcohol-induced atmosphere. “Awh thanks, tis nothing much! Me 'Mittens Mitt', also known to the wise as Bigby’s hand.
"Good to know, it's a spell I'd like to research more." Remembering their earlier conversation, Fern changes the subject "So how did you get rid of your hunger curse? You said your spell didn't work on it"
“Oh I can teach ya sometime if ya-oh…” Mittens stalks and stops in the cobbles on the street, Fern can seen he looks a little uneasy. “Well I kinda-sorta…Died.” Mittens admits, the last word escaping from his mouth as a whisper.
"Died?" Fern whispers too, arm stretching to hug, but pausing in midair, not sure if their fellow wizard would be ok with that action. "But you're here now? 'm sorry... if you want to talk about it?... or we can go back to talking about the others getting drunk?"
“No no it’s fine.” Mittens stretches out an arm and takes Ferns hand in his own soft paw, an inky blue shimmer of splotches across it clearly visible to her. “Orianna-who I said that starry mask reminded of, well she helped me, she did the spell to be me back. I got eaten by my friend Calla’s familiar Mal when he turned into a big horrible beastie just after we brought her back from her own death stone state. It’s kinda funny actually, being cursed to feel hungry and then dying being eaten.”
He gave a laugh which quickly faltered into a grimace and his paw in Fern’s hand shook ever so slightly.
Fern squeezes Mittens paw. "I'm glad you got back, and not being hungry all the time now is surely good...don't let the memory of being eaten eat you up. Being eaten and surviving to read more and learn more is important." Pausing, Fern questioned "ah, um, is it common for familiars to turn against their wizard?" as they thought back to the recent conversation about familiars with Dr. Archie, where he extolled their virtues. He hadn't mentioned any risks.
“Callas situation was..a unique one.” Mittens stated, continuing down the street still
holding Fern’s hand, it’s touch felt reassuring. “So how’re ya finding your time here? Any ideas forming about what you’d like to focus on between reading?”
"I'm still getting used to being in a city, so many buildings packed together. I'd really like to focus on learning more skills. Grandpa always said that they are the lightest trade good you can carry, but there is so much I want to learn, map making and metalwork and wood carving and leatherwork..." Fern's voice trailed off a bit "I'm not sure where to start, I'm trying to find someone I can trade the skills I do have for teaching, but haven't had any luck so far."
"Wow that's a lot!" Mittens complimented with a whistle. "Well there's always teachers about for some skill or another, I found me Slyvan teacher Violet after she'd moved her from the Feywild so I could learnt to speak with Levkoi and other fey. Ya just gotta know where to look sometimes."
"It's not the finding them that's the problem, it's the doing it for trade rather than coin. Spells are so expensive, and I'm trying to save enough to get more of those. It'd be nice to find a teacher where I could repair their roof or something in return for their teaching. How did you meet Levkoi?"
"Fact is you probably won't meet too many wizards who can't just magically repair or just summon a whole new roof." Mittens sighs with a shrug . "As for Lev we sorta ran into each other in Krigala. Bit of coincidence he was the one to emerge when I called upon a Fey for help."
"I think I'll need more study to get to that point... Where is Krigala? I haven't heard the name before"
"Oh it's in The Beastlands, top layer apparently. We had to go to a farm to help out with an..in-fey-sation I suppose you could say." Mittens added, wincing at little at the unintentional play on words.
"Top layer? Layer of what? There seems to be an awful lot I need to learn about."
"Aye there's a lot of planer magical stuff to know about..I was gonna start learning about it all properly from Miss Kennari but..well.." Mittens off, and gives out a little sigh as his ears droop slightly. "Things..didn't work out that way."
Fern tilted their head slightly to one side, observing Mittens profile "Do you want to talk about what happened?"
Mittens shook his head. "There's not much to say. We came here together, me to be her apprentice, she left off on some quest of her own, ands probably decided she didn't want to come back. Tis fine. I'm doing alright with me own studies."
"What are studying? I seem to need figure out more of the basic terminology - planes, portals, familiars - is there anything I'm missing?"
"I specialise on me illusion magic with mixing in a few dabbles in evocation and other schools of magic to make me illusions more believable and even physical if I need'em to be." Mittens says, projecting a miniature version of that giant gloved paw similar to his own which waves at Fern before resting as if sitting on Mittens shoulder.
"Term whilst it's more a pick it up as ya go kinda deal'eo for me, ya can read as much as ya like but there's nothing better than getting paws on or avoiding in some cases, to learn and remember something."
"Thank you for showing me minor illusion, I was able to use it to do the duty of a choking herald when we were investigating a mystery a few weeks back. I haven't seen other illusions though, or really much magical combat at all yet, and wasn't particularly good at it"
"Choking herald?" Mittens enquires, curious to hear her bring up the Herald-Dragon Family Business. "Which one was that may I ask?"
"Which one? It was just the herald that was announcing guests at the party Baron Luxemforth's fake father held trying pull off a coup. The herald was being rude and Erron put a ball bearing in his horn and it ended up shooting out...caused quite a commotion. Have you met Luxemforth or Erron?"
"Um no I haven't! Sorry-"Mittens scratches the back of his head. "I thought you meant one of the..well champions I suppose you could say of the big mighty dragon entities that are around the place."
"Oh! No, sorry" Fern paused to think "I've met Frigus and their mom, and Frigus was called a 'Herald' but you said 'Champions', how many are there?
Mittens shook his head. "No no, ah I'm probably confusing ya. Yes they're called Heralds, but I'm still not sure of all their number. I think most of them live at Orianna's or at least hang out a lot their time at her place."
"There is a lot that's confusing here, but I'm trying to keep up. So is Orianna a Herald too? And what about Matches? They both seemed to know more about what was going on"
"Yes she is, don't know a Matches though! I suppose I'll run into'im at some point with all that Herald stuff going on with Calla now. Say you fancy getting something? To eat I'm starving!"
"Food would be good! There was too much alcohol there and I was concerned that eating anything would turn me into something... Where do you like eating around here?"
"Oh so you don't drink?-Not that I'm supposed to anyway-but the stuff doesn't give me a buzz in the few swigs I've had ere'or there like it does the adults. Well it's late," Mittens states, realising most places are now closed before he makes a suggestion. "Tell ya what come back to mine, Yin's always baking things so I'm sure there's some fresh bread, I could knock us up some of me famous doorstop sandwiches!"
"Very rarely, and not much when I do. Alcohol is expensive, and I don't like the idea of not knowing what's happening. Plus, you learn more listening to drunk people when you aren't. I love bread! Why do you call your sandwiches doorstops?"
"Because that's all ya'll be good for by the time ya've finished with it!" Mittens laughs kindly taking hold of Fern's hand in his paw and leading the way for the pair down lamp light street, his explanations muffling away into the night. "It's something me Pa always used to call them something to do with the size. Now do you like meat or fish? Or would you prefer some dairy-Oooh I could do cheese toasties...."
