Written following Blood On My Name with the wonderful stablemate Yinmaris
As the two adventurers get to work on Silver's stable Yinmaris turns to Mittens quizzically before turning away, his jaw clenches with some attempted restraint before turning back to Silver's stall and giving it a clean using some simple prestidigitation as Yin breathes out through his nose. After the stall is cleaned and there aren't any more excuses not to talk the eladrin turns Mittens, asking one of the questions on his mind. His voice still has that concerning steadiness despite the anger clear with the delivery of his words. He keeps his voice down enough so others do not hear outside the stall.
"Mittens, Calla said some... very choice words earlier before the fiend arrived, words that are concerning me quite a lot. On top of the clear link between Merla and where we were. I'll be blunt. Do you think Calla would be capable, not just in ability but also intent and motive, of aiding in the assassination attempt on Queen Merla? At least at the time of the attempt. It's not just what she said that concerns me and makes me wonder if she had a hand in it, her silence spoke volumes."
Mittens had mostly been quiet since the party had bid adieu to one another in Portal Plaza, only speaking long enough to say to Yin he was taking Silver, Calla’s and now his new horse, to get stabled and give him a thorough health check.
He hadn’t asked asked Yin to come help, but Yin just had anyway.
Because thats what friends do.
His mind flicked back to that lunch-time chat with Calla, as he himself had silently wondered the same concerns that Yin had asked him. Calla had read his face like a book despite his best efforts and had in her openly blunt and honest ‘Calla-manner’ confirmed: “If I wanted her dead…. she’d be dead.”
That though, wasn’t what was bothering Mittens.
“No, Calla already told me if she’d wanted Queen Merla dead she’d of done it.” He said simply, working his hands along Silver’s hide checking for any nicks or scrapes or ticks-nasty little blood sucking buggers they were.
Feeding Silver an apple or two to help distract Silver as Mittens does his thing, Yin's face calms. His anger seemingly subsiding for now, helping him focus on Mitten's every word. "Fair, what she said earlier in Elvish is making me think wonder that though. Her wish to right an ancient wrong and give the courts a reminder about change... What she said and the fact she said it right by where Merla ascended, it's too much to be a coincidence. Wait, did you also have those same suspicions about her too or did she just tell you?"
"Really do need to start learning Elvish, if she keeps insisting on trying to hide stuff from me." Mitttens murmurs, grabbing a brush from a newly purchased care pack and working his way around the horses flank the opposite side of Yin. "It had crossed me mind, though she plucked it outta there before I chance to ask her." he said loudly as he picked up a rhythm.
"I mean the way she said what she said in Elvish, I don't know if it's that she only would have done something hidden so no-one could see. Raine was there, she would have tried to intervene which would have meant some kind of repercussions. Calla's smart, she wouldn't be so overt with acting against Merla. Also what she said to you doesn't mean she didn't have a part in all this. Plus maybe she just wanted to appease you so you wouldn't tell me." Yinmaris casts some prestidigitation to clean any dirt off of Silver while giving Silver's mane some more shine. "Also I could always teach you Elvish."
Mittens sighs and and slumps against the wall of the stable arms crossed.
"I really don't get Calla sometimes. One minute she's happy as larry to be surrounded by friends and have found herself a cosy little home at Orianna's place. The next she's writing specifically unrecognisable job posts and tucking herself away all hooded, broody and mysterious-like at The Hung Rabbit when she has a perfectly good available group of friends who would drop everything to help her at a moments notice."
Yinmaris nods while listening to Mittens, letting the silence sit before talking. "Well she does seem like a mystery, I still need to figure out what Corellon meant when they spoke as those words had an impact on Calla. I can see the change in her since she has returned to the mortal coil though. Despite how our conversation went, her rage seems to have cooled. It was something always there since I met her, I could feel it. Maybe she just wanted discretion with this current job, which is why she was being so clandestine. I'll be honest there would be certain things in my life I'd rather you or my other friends not join me on if they ever came up. She wanted folks who'll ask less questions and just do the job they were hired for." He rests his back against the stable wall and chuckles. "In that regard, we may have been the worst people for the job. Although I think we did rather well till it became clear there were some clear links to Merla and whatever Calla was up to."
"She can be just so..blinkered sometimes." Mittens admits. "I feel really awful about whats happened to her in her life, and I get she wants to do something'bout it. But she's doing it to a point she's forgetting about important things. Enjoying herself and having fun, spending time with friends..looking after horse . Alright fair enough Silver isn't in a bad shape or anything, but she didn't even bloody name'em Yin! Who gets a horse and doesn't pick out a name?"
"Well, she has been getting better. Calla came over after all for dinner and we had a lovely time, it is odd to not name one's horse though I grant you. And I'm happy Silver has found such a noble name. But you said she wants to do something about things that happened to her in her life. I can understand that sentiment. Do you think her past had something to do with the job we just did?" Yinmaris asks. "What she said and then what Corellon themselves said, I can't help but see Calla in a different light."
Mittens scratched one ear and just thought.
"I just wish Calla was more clear sometimes. She says all this stuff about not trusting Fey and making rash decisions and yet it seems like all the time she could do with listing to her own advise sometimes."
Yinmaris smirks. "Well maybe one day she'll realise the irony of it all, although there could be many reasons that Calla chooses to be vague and hides things but I have no clue about her past. Also about trusting Fey, you just have to use your brain when talking to Fey it's not hard." Yinmaris states. "Maybe it's the thing that so many people say that the Feywild is bad so it's an easy place to blame especially when a lot of these issues can just be dealt with with common sense. Or again it's about her past, she clearly has a hate for the courts." Yin's eyes widen with grim realisation and mumbles something in Elvish before turning to Mittens, trying to change the subject. "Anyway lets focus back on Silver, is he a riding horse do you think?"
Mittens once again in his mind saw that small scared little girl of Calla hiding behind that pillar in her family home, being talked about like she was just a thing...
No one whether a horse or a person should be treated like that.
Maybe once Calla's current mission was over and her mind was clearer, he could give Silver back to her.
Mittens shakes himself out of his thoughts and engages with Yin's question, happy for now to be able to talk about something he actually could understand.
"Actually Silver’s a draft horse Yin and a fine one too as you can tell by his strong stocky build, Calla made the right choice in buying’im for hauling. Riding though horses are much leaner with more muscle build up the chest area….”
