Dear Ma & Pa (& Merla),
Things have been both busy and yet somehow quiet here in New Hillborrow. Let me start by saying I’ve started building a home for Fog and I! The Elders were very kind when they allowed us to choose the plot of land, and even offered to have workers help free of charge, or nearly. When it’s all finished, there will be a spare room you could stay in. Perhaps, if you want a break from taking care of Merla and a break from all those fey shenanigans, you could come to visit and stay for a bit? Pa, perhaps you could give me some pointers on how to build the best beehives. BB’s flower fields are right there after all. Would be great to take care of some. Probably best to keep them opposite from the woodworking shop we’ll have, yeah?
Besides building a home — which has been taking up a lot of my downtime — I recently helped Rae, the friend I wrote about in my last letter who had “a lot of stuff happening” with them. Their stuff is… well, it would be complicated to get into unless you understand arcane practices. But to boil it down to its simplest pieces they picked up a journal from K’ul Goran (you should be familiar with that place, Merla) which they thought could help save their friend, Keros.
But you see, the journal was an arcane tome, wizard’s spellbook, and haunted artefact all rolled into one. It had been corrupting Rae, making them lose their grasp on reality. It was, in essence, cursed. This curse made them believe that if they could dominate the Weave, they could save Keros from their “destined fate” of becoming one of the Thousand Words. I don’t know all of what that entails but from speaking to Keros about it after everything happened, he does not seem very keen on losing himself and becoming the embodiment of a concept.
And I don’t blame him.
Things are settling for both, day-by-day. But their healing journey will not happen overnight. Rae is staying with us in the village. Their sense of direction is missing and… I get that. I was much the same after my journey to the Hells. I’m trying to do for them what you did for me, Merla. Just being there. Listening when they need it, and making a safe space for them to heal.
As for Keros, he’s been in Fort Ettin. So close but still giving Rae space. It’s been a few weeks since we’ve seen him in the village. Should check in with him too at some point. I’m equally concerned about how he’s doing as I am for Rae.
Hope you’re both doing well. And you too, Merla. Of course. Yinmaris and Raine are working really hard to help her, Ma, Pa. Perhaps, if you come here, I’ll extend an invitation to them both so you can meet them. Both are really good people and, well, might help give you some hope.
Yondalla knows, hope can really help when things seem their bleakest. I know.
All our love,
Marto, Fog, Fionn & Gwenaël
