Dear Ma & Pa (& Merla),
I got a chance to visit Sigil again recently.
Also got my first introduction to Soul Coins. Or something like them.
Turns out there’s a devil out there wanting to throw a spanner in the workings of the Blood War between Devils and Demons. Ya know, SSDD kind of stuff.
Except these “soul coins” weren’t real ones. They contained people’s shadows rather than their souls.
Now, you may be thinking, how could their shadows be taken? But that’s the thing. Even in Sigil there are people who aren’t as well off as others and as anyone who has been in hard times for a long time will know, you’d do nearly anything to get outta the slump you’ve found yourself in.
So they decided to sell their shadows for 50 gold a pop.
The other thing about these faux “soul coins” is they had a touch of celestial to them. Ever heard of a Lantern Archon? They look something like this:
Interesting little things, aren’t they?
Well, it’s not so cute being trapped in a coin.
The one doing all this trapping was a Ultroloth — a fiendish general that is normally in charge of lesser Yugoloths in the endless war between the Nine Hells and the Abyss.
So, what did he want?
He was done with it all. Done with the endless war. Done being a pawn. And because fiends like him are schemers and manipulators, even though we drove him out of Sigil — really, it was more that Yin drove them out by calling upon the Lady of Pain, somehow; honestly Merla, that Yin is something extraordinary, in the best way — the Ultroloth has already moved to the next part of his plan. I know it. So, not an entire success, but hey, at least we can say we’ve stopped people’s shadows being stolen.
Speaking of, Merla had her shadow taken and “eaten” by a Shadow Kragen in the Shadowfell a while ago, didn’t she? It came up as me and the others (Yinmaris, Crow, and “Artur”) were putting our heads together to make sure what, if anything, could be the long term effects of such shadowless-ness. So you may want to show Kruxeral this as I don’t have a way to speak to him directly and I know he may want to be informed but…
Since it happened in the Shadowfell, there’s a chance that part of her memories may be gone. Or, because Merla is tied to the Feywild, it could be that if anyone was able to recover her shadow from the creature (if it’s even still alive), someone might be able to control her? Though why anyone would try to control her now is beyond me…
It could be nothing. I hope it’s nothing.
In other news, I’m thinking about buying a plot of land here and building a home for Fog and me. Need to speak to the Elders first, make sure they’re okay with me setting up in the village. I’m pretty sure they will be. They’re good folk here and Fog and I like the quiet nature that surrounds this village. I’ll let you know how that chat goes, when I get around to having it.
Love you lots!
