Dear Ma & Pa (& Merla),
A month ago there was a big to do about a whole bunch of Somethings. I chose to keep to New Hillborrow so as to protect the village. Thankfully, nothing came, but having crossed paths with one of the Somethings, I am glad we — myself, Fog, BB, Dwirhian, Jacinta, Frigus & Waffles; all us “adventurers” who live in and around the village — did not have to deal with them. The last time I did Jacinta’s brother Robin… he died.
Now before you start panicking (gosh, I hope you’ve kept reading), Chartreuse — an eladrin from the feywild who has spent time in both the Court of Harmony and the Court of Serenity — did some magic to preserve Robin until we were able to get back to Daring Heights where I went straight to Velania to ask for her help in bringing Robin back. He has long since then recovered. This was back in Ches this happened. But when I tell you Ma, Pa, (and Merla), that the guilt that gripped me for not being there for him… It took me back to memories I do not like to think about.
But the Somethings. The one we (Mittens, Robin, Yinmaris, Chartreuse, and myself) came across was Something Eldritch, as I was told later. This same Something terrorised the Grandmaster and Master at Arms of the Order of the Crimson Fist sometime after my encounter with them. For us, they were trying to assail a congregation of Lathandrites in a small valley village.
For several days, maybe a tenday or two, the dark had been trying to get in and snuff out the lights. Our task was to help them keep the light. I was able to help with my axe and my flaming longsword, but still. These creatures of darkness were persistent, heavy hitting, and terrifying. We made it through the night, but not without a cost, and Yinmaris could tell that whatever the Something was attempting to do, was not able to linger any longer.
Of course, these Somethings never truly go away. They are always there. They are part of everything. Perhaps that is what makes them terrifying. But where there are negative Somethings, there are positives. Opposites. Balance. Harmony.
I heard from Yin that there’s no music in the Court. Perhaps I should pick up learning an instrument so when I come to visit I can play for Merla a little bit. It’s hard to imagine her not surrounded by music…
I hope you’re both remembering to take care of yourselves as well as her. And if the Summer Queen is being too forbearing Ma, she may just need someone to talk to. I certainly don’t know her like Merla does, but as a mom, I think she’d appreciate your wisdom from time to time. I know I always do.
I’ll try to plan to come visit soon.
Love you both so much,
Marto, Fog, Fionn & Gwenaël
