Dear Wil,
I must thank you for your efforts the other day. I wouldn't want you to think me rude. It was good to be close to you again, if only for a short while. And please, don't be a stranger. We have so much more to show you.
Yours with the purest of intentions,
Meera of the Black Flood
Wil balked at the wet kiss mark underneath the words before balling the letter up and tossing it over his shoulder while he gazed at the three black diamonds on the table that came with it. He lay his callused hands on the the table, regarding the facets of the beautifully disgusting stones.
"I don't expect you to forgive me." He managed at last. "That disgusting wretch getting close to me is one thing, but I allowed her to violate your space as well. If you only have anger left for me, I get it."
"Nonsense." The word flowed like a gentle stream from the form of water behind, who wrapped her arms around him and nestled her head in the crook of his neck. "That was all her. Thus, my ire is reserved for her also. You only did what you needed to."
The man froze slightly at the sudden gesture of affection. Even now, after all the years they had spent together, Wil was never fully certain how to react. By now he knew the Water Guardian wouldn't judge him either way, but he always worried about betraying her expectations. Deep in his heart he was scared that one day his guardian spirit, his best friend and his lover would grow tired of dealing with such a tiresome and emotionally constipated man. Eventually he cradled her cheek with his hand and let the familiar warm water wash across his palm.
"I truly don't deserve you. Doing what I needed to allowed that psycho to make off with her brood before we could do anything about it. And all the people she caught in the crossfire, infecting them with the black water and throwing those thralls against the guards. Fey sure but they were civilians, just in the wrong place at the wrong time. And she threw their lives away for the sake of a distraction. Fuck, I should've stopped it!"
"You couldn't have-"
"Then I need to be better! Stronger, faster, smarter! That's blood on my goddamn hands that won't wash until I've dealt with her! I need to be good enough to protect the people around me. When I took the title of Chieftain of Clan Frozendagger I was without a people. When I became Crowned-In-Scars it was nothing but ceremony. But that shit means something now. The people around me, the people of this city, the adventurers I run with, these are my people. To be Crowned is to take on the scars so that they remain unscathed."
"...Surely that is too much of a burden for one man to bear." The Water Guardian managed at last, running her fingers through his hair.
"It doesn't matter whether it is or it isn't. I have to do it. I couldn't do things any other way. Come to think of it, Meera and the Children being at large now is a huge setback, but also a golden opportunity."
"Oh?"
"Think about it. I probably can never set foot in the Feywild again. I'm the second person in history to have someone released from Morinn's prison and the first to do it by force, and for ten people no less. She'd send agents to turn me into a goddamn popsicle if her man doesn't put my head on a pike first. I'm not exactly an inconspicuous guy either. Somehow the Longstrider held an audience with her once so she knows the face of a Frozendagger plenty well enough. And yet Meera threw away that advantage to come here. Home fucking turf, where there is an entire fort of maniacs for hire who don't give a shit about politics or borders. If there's a threat to this place, they'll fucking squash it, and you better believe I'll be leading the charge. Fuck, there isn't even any deal or leverage she has left so I don't have to play nice. She's my responsibility. So all I have to do now is destroy her."
Or turn her over to the aboleth. Wil said the last part in his head.
"Well then, if you are so determined to protect everyone it once again falls on me to protect you. I cannot have my Prince shoulder everything on his own. Though I will ask for one small favour."
"Name it."
"I want to hit her." she stated plainly. "Hard."
"Lady after my own heart..." Wil chuckled after a short while once he processed the statement. "Now come on. We better get these diamonds over to Lolli and Elder Rabbit. If we're lucky there still might be some of Elder Rabbit's birthday cake left."
