I’m finally feeling a little better. I have my voice back at least, even if I still haven’t managed to shake this irksome sheep form. Luckily, I managed to garner help from an unlikely source to record this announcement.
Where to start? I guess it all started while I was travelling in Zakhara and I happened upon a young human street urchin by the name the Ahmed Nokes. The boy appeared to have great potential, so I took him to be my apprentice in wizardry.
Under my tutelage he grew into an excellent wizard, but so impulsive. Alas, this is where I failed the young boy I had come to care for so much. I took into my employ, against my better judgement, a young lady as well. They fell for each other quite quickly, but they encouraged each other too much, they were not ready for the magic they attempted. I believe that what happened to her as a result broke poor young Nokes’ mind. I tried to amend his memories, to heal him, to move away from her vengeful family and protect him, but I couldn’t fix the damage that had been done. We found ourselves in Kantas, I transmuted for us a simple tower from the old oak trees in the woods, about an hour north of Daring Heights, and tried to repent from my sins by offering my services to the local people, who were building lives in this dangerous land. For 3 years I performed mundane magic, helping clear roads of rocks and get cats from trees, because I couldn’t bring myself to continue my research.
It was two years, and sixteen days ago that I opened my eyes from my trance to see him standing over me with my wand. To try to speak, but only to be able to bleat. And it was 2 years and fifteen days that I spent locked in the garden of my own tower as a sheep, watching my dear apprentice twist and pervert the magic I had spent so long to master. To watch him use my wand of polymorph to turn people into beasts against their will. To jeopardise my wand’s magical integrity with his crude additions, till it was no more than a magical timebomb.
This is where my brave adventurers come in, I managed to escape from Nokes’ with a scroll of speak to animals and found these adventurers (a rakish Kenku gentleman named Crowe Russell, a delightful svirfneblin lady called Zeenah and a rather surprising Tiefling called Sophia) in a charming tavern called “The 3 headed Ettin”, but no sooner had I started to explain my predicament then Nokes’ brute of an enforcer, Guz, found me (sorry Guz, but you were a brute). He had even brought with him some guards who Nokes had transformed into animals; Henry (a bear) and Gareth and Pete (wolves). I do say, the adventurers did a wonderful job of bamboozling them. There were all sorts of flim-flams, ranging from distracting them with illusions, to charming Guz, to “suggesting” that Henry return home (which he oddly did). In fact, I don’t think Guz has been the same since. It’s quite an improvement! Although at one point I was hoisted into the air by a rope of climbing – quite unbecoming of a wizard.
These kind folk then agreed to help me claim back my wand, and accompanied me back to my tower. After some more smoke and mirror tactics from Crowe Russell, we encountered Nokes, who engaged us in combat and cast enlarge on Henry the bear (while he was using the commode may I add). Naturally a ruckus broke out; they saw off the ape guards (I say, there’s not much scarier than an ape with a greatsword), and somehow befriended henry. Under my expert tactical advice, they stormed my tower, forcing Nokes into my bedroom. He must have cast polymorph on my bed, because a great mahogany and cotton dragon burst forth from the bedroom. My newfound adventurer friends wasted no time though, Mr Russell set to work trying to set the dragon on fire while Zeenah adeptly snuck up to nokes and snatched the wand. Without my magical item, Sophia and henry made quick work of Nokes. The bed dragon, obviously affronted by having sentience rudely thrust upon him, took off and flew away into the sunset. I wonder what will become of that aberration of nature, or if I will see it again. I would very much like to study it (and nap on it).
I must say, I am deeply saddened by Nokes’ passing, as he was the closest thing to a family I have known, but I must move onwards in his memory. After convincing me not to use the wand on myself for fear it could kill me in its damaged state, I have resolved to continue my research and return all the creatures who were transformed by Nokes back to their human forms. Henry kindly agreed to help, and who happened to wander through the door a few days later but a very disorientated Guz and the two wolves from the tavern. I think he may have sustained some permanent mental damage from the barrage of spells cast on him, but he’s proving to be quite a quick study at Artificery and is helping me with my work to create a new wand. Who knows if the apes will appear as well, but we may have a veritable menagerie on our hands if they do. How strange that from all that violence, the only fatality was my dear Nokes.
I definitely still owe those three adventurers a boon for their help, and Guz and I will endeavour to produce for them any magical item within our power. I believe that we could build most items that would be considered “uncommon”, and maybe some rarer ones, but Guz is still only learning and may make some mistakes on the more difficult items. It will be up to them to request of us and we will see what we can do. I’m sorry I couldn’t reward them in gold or gems, but it seemed that Nokes had ransacked my tower of anything valuable.
Speaking of which, if there are any adventurers in daring heights who need common items or magical services, we may be able to help for a price. And the time may come very soon where we need to employ adventurers to obtain for us some rare components for our work. Remuneration in the form of some fitting bequest will obviously be provided.
N.B. two small things, firstly, if miss Zeenah could return to me the wand she procured from Nokes, I would much appreciate it, as it is not only incredibly powerful, but also immensely dangerous. In addition, if anyone finds it within their power to return my bed for me it would be heartily appreciated – it was last seen flying towards the northern forest.
