The Tale of Five Critters - from the Kantas Collection.
‘Fine treasure awaits’, the Ettin reports
‘Find the tower o’ stone, half-buried, due north’
Thus, eager and headstrong, our heroes began
Through grassland and woods, adventure at hand
By the light of day, ‘twas easily found
Like a stake of the gods, driven deep through the ground
The tower of grey, unguarded it seemed
Beckoned and called to the power of greed
And filled with ambition, heroic and brazen
Our heroes proceeded, good foresight forsaken
Though lying in wait, a predator curled
And at their approach, its magic unfurled
A flash of green light, followed by silence
The trap had been sprung, though not one of violence
It seemed, by good fortune, each member survived
But something had changed in this party of five
Skin of flesh, replaced now by scales
Teeth to fangs, and legs to tails
Reptile, arachnid and vermin, become
Captured, interred, our heroes undone
But hark, what appears, just three days later
The clashing of blades proceeding our saviours
The storm of battle descends in a rage
And luck sees our heroes released from their cage
Though still in new bodies; foreign and sleek
Our heroes attempt to escape, to retreat
With purpose and drive, they begin the ascension
And here now their story defies comprehension
Despite their size, against all odds
The magical critters climb like the gods
Surmounting a hindering lack of ability
With feats of endurance, of wit and agility
The mightiest doors bar the way
Riddles deceive, entrapping their prey
Axe blades gleam as they swing in the halls
Demons summoned to hinder them all
Not one barrier ably sufficed
To smother the flame that burned so bright
Reaching the summit, our heroes prevailed
Lifting the curse - escaping their jail
Returned to their forms and free of their fate
The five did thus swear an oath they’d not break
Let down their guard, they would not, now henceforth
And the five did return, alive, from the north…
