In Port Ffirst, on a stool on a stage in a corner of The Cavernous Seashank you will find a gnome. He's there almost every night, strumming a battered old lute (embellished with fading dwarven script), and singing songs from a seemingly endless repetoire. He plays hard and fast and loud. His voice is not perfect, but it's brimming with passion. He swears his sound (which he's called "Rock music", because he first discovered it in the rocky hills he used to call home; he's also called it "Gnome-a-billy", "Adventurer's Punk" and "The Future") will catch on; that he is at the vanguard of entertainment in the Expanse. Sometimes, a magic almost catches the air when he plays, but mostly people just tell him to shut up. He plays anyway.
His skin is light grey, pallid; his hair is a black shock that flops over his dark eyes. He has a quick and ready smile, and many-a charming word. His clothes are ripped and torn, but almost too neatly so - like they've been deliberately damaged. His boots are far cleaner than anyone who stays in Old Town. He claims he plays his music in exchange for his bed and board in the Cavernous Seashank, but old Jedd says he pays every night and tips generously.
His huge nose, you see, is broken in three or four places. If you asked him on two different nights how that happened, he would give you two different answers - but always leading to the same final sentence: "...and that's why they call me Crumblesnout."
