From a wealthy but low order of nobility, Baron Luxemforth Borishton Vanderbelt thought he had it all... until he met her.
Gertrude Guntershclauffen, the most beautful and fair lady he had ever had the good fortune to set eyes on in court. Utterly perplexed, and instantly in love, he suddenly sought up the courage to speak with her umoungst her peers. Politely introducing himself with a low bow, he attempted to charm and woo her over the course of the next... well... 3 minutes.
For you see, Gertrude was a Duchess, as were the majority of those she bothered with. For a lowly Baron to so brazenly approach her was seen as... borderline insulting. However despite this, she found his eargerness amusing, and was somewhat entertained by his wit and guile.
Her freinds however, were not. "A lowly Baron!?", "Look at his cape!", "What a replusvie little man". The whispers went around and around him, with the intent for him to hear.
And hear he did, for he felt shame and embarassment surrounding his low standing amoung these giants of nobility. He stuttered, and stammered, and eventually was left silent twixt this unrelenting verbal torment. Gertrude was smiling whilst the others mocked, but also seemed embarrassed and was gazing on with what seemed to be pity.
Causing embarrassment to this noble lady!? Luxemforth could take no more. He fled, eyes closed, and utterly humiliated. He sought the comfort of his carraige awaiting him outside, and cursed the nobles who had mocked him.
How could he win the hand of his sweet Gertrude? What did he have to offer, besides money of which she already had. Well logically, if not money, then fame!
"That's it!" he screamed to the silence of his otherwise empty carriage. "I shall endeavour to become the best duelist... nay... SWORDSMAN in the world!".
Slay the evil, condemn the guilty, seek valour and justice through the might of his blade. These are the things he needed to vow in order to win the heart and hand of his fair lady. Surely her father would gift her to him if he could prove to be such a man of worth!?
