From the small and relatively poor fishing village of Driftwood Cove on the coast of the Sea of Swords, near Athkatla, Safire spent the majority of her childhood gazing out to sea. Watching trade ships, navy and adventuring ships sail past her every day, Saffy dreamed of the world beyond the horizon. Her parents’ little fishing trawler was too basic for her.
Her powers manifesting as a teenager, it was obvious she had a natural affinity for the weather. Something which came in quite useful for her parents small fishing boat. However, they knew she would outgrow the small fish bowl of a village. So, when she was old enough, Safire packed up her things, and with a tearful goodbye, travelled to Athkatla for a life of adventures at sea.
She hadn’t meant to become a pirate. She genuinely didn’t! She thought she’d end up working with a large merchant shipping company or maybe even a war vessel. But on her first night, she stayed at an inn and met the most incredibly fun people she could ever hope to meet. After a good few rounds of drinks, some showcasing of her skills and a dance or two, she was welcomed aboard the crew of The Seafoam Queen as their ‘Weather Witch’.
For the next several years they sailed the seas, raiding merchant ships and taking on adventurers. They weren’t cut throats, and tried to avoid outright murder whenever possible. And they were good at it.
Things changed when one day when they were in reasonably calm waters, but surrounded by thick fog and didn’t expect the rival pirate vessel suddenly appearing out of the mists. The ship was three times their size and they knew they wouldn’t be able to take it on. So, with Safire using her wind magic to fill the sails, they fled. After an hour it was obvious the vessel wouldn’t be able to catch them, and the crew relaxed a little. That was when a loud horn sounded from the rival ship.
What happened next was so fast Safire could barely register it. The vessel came to an abrupt halt as an enormous creature breached from the water beneath The Seafoam Queen, breaking it apart. Safire, using her quick reactions, was able to Gust herself off the ship and into the sea. The rest of the crew weren’t so lucky. Injured and clinging to a piece of debris, Safire watched the distant shapes in the fog of her friends, her ship, and her home disappearing beneath the waves as whatever the creature was withdrew and their pursuers moved in. She fell into unconsciousness soon after.
The next thing she knew she was lying on sand, washed up on some deserted beach. Looking around, she was the only one who seemed to have made it. Standing up and walking in a random direction, she soon found a small outpost. They explained she was in a place called Kantas.

“Kantas? Never heard of it.” Well, if she was going to be here a while, she might as well make the most of it…
