From the records of Quenanthri Koehlanna, Chronicler of Port Ffirst.
Following the successful solution to Jill Graben’s Gnoll problem, rumour has it Soros himself is looking for some help. Not wanting to miss this opportunity to explore Port Ffirst and start learning its secrets, I approached Soros at the Flourished Hook and asked to accompany the party of adventures. Soon enough the adventurers Zeenah, Crumblesnout, Quick White Paw and Ghesh ventured to the tavern to hear what Soros had to say.
Soros was concerned that someone was spying on his business and passing this information onto Lord Kensington who had been using it to gain advantage in business. Specifically, someone was spying on the comings and goings of Soros’s ships. He offered to reward the party handsomely if they found the spy and brought them to him with proof. It was of utmost importance that this was done quietly and that Soros and his brother Voros were in no way implicated.
Soros offered two clues to help the party in their investigations:
1, Whoever had been spying on the Soros brothers’ business must have had access to the lighthouse in order to view the records of the comings and goings of the ships.
2, Mundungus Keyhorn, an employee of Lord Kensington, had refused to take Soros’s bribes. He had moved into a fancy new house in Port Ffirst and it was not clear how he could afford this on his salary.
Maybe he had been spying on the side...
The party investigated Mundungus’s house that night and broke in with the help of Zeenah’s magic. They woke Mundungus and his wife and caused quite a panic, before Crumblesnout used his magic to put the Keyhorns back to sleep. After searching they found some papers but these didn’t provide any further leads.
The following day the party split up. Zeenah and Ghesh went back to Mundungus’s house to speak with him directly. They managed to talk their way into the house by claiming to be employees of Lord Kensington also. They discovered Mundungus was retired and concluded that he wasn’t involved.
Meanwhile, Crumblesnout, Paw and I went to the lighthouse to speak with the lighthouse keeper. Crumblesnout devised a brilliant plan to con information out of Felani Hightusk, the lighthouse keeper. Before either could say anything Crumblesnout strode forth to begin his ruse. Paw and I were left scratching our heads. Needless to say, we failed to con Felani. In the end, honesty worked surprisingly well! Felani allowed us to investigate her home for clues. There we found evidence that someone had broken in through one of the windows, someone had spilt ink and pressed their left hand leaving a print, and there was explosive jelly residue on the ship ledger. It seemed someone had been breaking in to the lighthouse to read the records!
When I arrived in Port Ffirst I set about interviewing as many of the inhabitants as I could. From these discussions I remembered that when the wharves were built by Soros and Voros, they used large quantities of explosive jelly. These explosives were stored in a secluded area of the wharves, away from people.
Later the party reconvened at the Cavernous Sea Shank to share notes. At this point, there was some discussion about the possibility this may be an ‘inside job’. Was Soros tricking us somehow and spying on himself? What would he get out of such a dubious scheme?
It was decided that the party would investigate the explosive jelly store next. We asked around and discovered that a dwarf named Aldor Keyhammer was quay foreman with responsibility for the explosive jelly stores. We got a boat over to the wharf and found Aldor’s house. He revealed that the explosive jelly had been going missing and that there was now a shortage. Aldor assumed it was one of his workers but hadn’t yet been able to catch the culprit. He did, however, have a prime suspect. Trista had disappeared three days ago and Aldor hadn’t heard from her since.
The party got a boat back to the mainland and went to visit Trista’s house. Searching around the back of the property Ghesh saw through a window that the house has been ransacked. The party found the door unlocked and went in the investigate. It seemed food on the table had only been left a day. I found screwed up papers on the floor which had been used to practice Lord Kensington’s signature. Strange! There were also many seemingly forged letters to Lord Kensington, left unsigned. These letters detailed ship movements from the lighthouse ledger.
While searching, Crumblesnout discovered a secret passage leading down into a cave beneath the house. Searching further the party found Trista bound and gagged. She told the party someone had broken in to her house and attacked her three nights ago. The attacker had come back many times since and she warned the party he may come back at any time!
Paw informed me later that he tried to hide as someone opened the front door, but didn’t have enough time. The person ran and, shouting, Paw ran after the man. What followed was a chase through the streets and over buildings. It was chaos; there were arrows, javelins and spells flying all around! Eventually, with a combination of might and magic, the party brought their quarry down. We tried to save him but were unsuccessful. On searching him we discovered a tattoo of a winged snake which seemed familiar to many of us, but we were unable to place. I thought I might know where I could find out more in a library in Darling Heights, and I stored this lead away for later.
When searching the body, we also found a map of Port Ffirst with many locations marked. We investigated each of these locations and discovered stores of explosives, rigged to blow up Port Ffirst itself! We informed the authorities who made the explosives safe.
When we returned to Trista’s house she was gone. We then started to piece together the clues. It was obvious now that she was left-handed, as was the person who spilt the ink at the lighthouse. She was also very strong, as she would have needed to be to climb up the lighthouse wall. The evidence was circumstantial but it all pointed clearly to Trista, but she was gone!
I returned to Soros with the party feeling more confused than when we started out on this investigation. However, Soros was so pleased we had thwarted the bomb plot that he rewarded us handsomely.
I still wonder who Trista is and where she went…
