Dear Councilors,
following the special election to fill the vacant senate seat of the late senator Kyra Stuurm of the Optimates (and of Behooved infamy), the Senate is now fully reconstituted, joined by its newest member, the former priestess of Milil, Amala Lovesong. Her faction allegiances are not well understood yet, but the defeat of the Purist candidate Vallen Cleaver, who had the support and endorsement of senator Marius Warborn, has caused quite the upset and given room for rumours to flourish. The outcome of the upcoming nomination of the Senate Leader, the primus-inter-pares among the senatorial fraternity, is now less certain than anyone would have thought. Much hinges on who the senators choose to elevate, and the expectation is that fierce negotiations will be conducted in the well of the senate house.

The active support Kantasian adventurers have given to Amala Lovesong's candidacy - evidently supported by the moderate senator Zakarus Rhodes - has not gone unnoticed by my Purist contacts. It is no understatement when I say that senator Marius Warborn, so far a staunch ally of the Dawnlands, was deeply disappointed. No official invitation to observe the proceedings has thus been forwarded to the Dawnlands, a point I regret to emphasise I predicted. However, the wily senator Rhodes has extended an invitation to a handful of Dawnland adventurers as his personal guests and assistants.
The Senate Leader selection traditionally is characterized by robust negotiations with promises of support being traded for policy priorities. Spokespeople for the various interest groups will be standing by to negotiate deals, issue threats and trade promises. I understand the balance of power is in considerable flux, so I would expect even more lively exchanges than is usual. I will keep my eyes on the proceedings and my ears to the ground, and report results as soon as I have reliable information. The Council may want to prepare themselves for a number of contingencies in our diplomatic outlook, depending on the outcome.

A letter from senator Zakarus Rhodes of the Senate Armed Services Committee arrives with you:
"I have put my cards on the table when I defied Marius; I am now fully committed, and I have no doubt he will utterly destroy me should he become the Senate Leader, and I fear many more besides me will suffer the same fate who stand in his way to consolidate power. I dread what he might do when he wields political power through the senate, and through physical coersion and intimidation with his Blue Sentinels militia, and the revolutionary zealots his henchman Sevorn has gathered around him. I can't just watch and let this happen, I had to do something. But I can't do this alone, and I must ask for your help one more time. Anyone but Marius. There must be others who feel like I do, and I hope to count you among them.
